  • if you did this as a joke its ok but if you are serious... things are bad... this is not the right way to create terrain because you create way too many polygons, too many sides and blocks etc and thats a hell to render in-game. also it will never compile. why not use the displacements tool instead ? it is a hell lot faster, it isn't laggy and most of all it will work...

    Only two words can save us now: DISPLACEMENT MAPPING. If I EVER see a map released with terrain created this way, I will download it, burn it to a cd, and then kill it with fire. It's the only answer. This is like creating a map without lights, except that the map without lights will only rape your eyes. This will rape your computer. And it has raped my soul.

  • Why are so many people complaining about this method. Ever since i started using carve as suggested in this vid i have been able to improve my maps a lot visually, while increasing the map's performance.

    Why people dislike this method i do not know

  • @asadsilk To start with, look at the first carve. It splits 1 brush into about 100. Using carve is not efficient neither does it look nice. It is quicker to use carve sure, but I guarantee after 1 save/close and open a lot of those blocks would not load the same. Hammer doesn't like it.

    For fantastic terrain I suggest you look up displacements. You can make some fantastic looking terrain, and it doesn't take that long either (The length of time is dependant on how finished you want it to look.

  • You've got to be one of the worst, and if not dumbest mappers the Source community has seen. Mappers like you that release bad maps help kill the Source games... Carving is the worst thing you can do ever, but coming from a bad mapper, it explains a lot.

    You don't need a good computer to USE/RUN (Compiling you'd want a quad core) Hammer, Ive ran it on as low as an Athlon XP 2.0ghz and 1.5gb of RAM. Congrats yet again you've proven that you're a bad mapper who doesn't understand the editor.

  • @anon185 Lmao hammer is basicly Worldcraft, tools are even more optimized so hammer is a bit faster, and you can compile on Pentium 2 :P I use it since 1999, sure it is faster now that I have quad Athlon than when I had Pentium 2... but it never took long anyway :P

  • @TheCrusaderBin You can but do you want to sit there for like ever for a map to compile or just have it finished in a few minutes? Practically speaking you'd want to use a quad core/ quad core w/ hyper threading/dual quad/ etc to compile in a reasonable amount of time.

  • @anon185 Always faster is better :P Just saying that with Pentium II It took 10 - 15 minutes for huge maps anyway, almost instantly small maps (like testing map, room and a box, just 4 rooms etc)

    And dont blame Hammer for crashing. It was you that cause it by excessive carving. You can make beautiful terrain in Hammer by using triangular prisms, meticulously sculpting the terrain whilst keeping the brush count low, which gives faster compile times and faster maps.

    ONE WORD: DISPLACEMENT. It allows you to create uneven terrain with the click of a button as well as editing it's vertices nice and easy. I just don't want anybody who sees this to try what he showed. It would be VERY bad. I'm guessing KY-Class end-of-the-world-scenario doomed.

  • That's abuse of carve. Use carve tool for simplistic things, like doors or windows.

    Terrain = rspeed fuckup
