As an aerospace engineer who specializes in helicopter aerodynamics, i can explain why the down force was so low when the helicopter was close to the ground. There is a phenomenon known as ground effect that acts like a cushion of air close to the ground. The easiest way for the mythbusters to figure out exactly how much downward force there was would be to do a momentum theory analysis based on the helicopter's weight.
