@ astrowisk: Yes the DVD "Moondances" contains both Preparation and Dunkirk, as well as several others from the concert at the Hammersmith Odeon, 17 April 1976. Purchase it at their official site, camelproductions
In the rhythm of his playing in his guitar solo, Andrew sways forward, vertical as he rides his mythic horse: his guitar solo with a joyous content, and confidence through the idyllic, magical elfin landscape; yet, it is the composition: the song form itself that give credibility to the fairytale fantasy; even the dissonance and synthetic drippings of acidified rock lend to the fantasy because the song itself evokes the tale.
A falling cadence, descending from heaven to Earth, ooo-soo classical -- and the long notes at the start of the measure: ooo-soo classical -- night birds outside me window love too, and want to join the band, or at least ride atop the Camel
Nimrodel, a classic, almost cliche march: then wholly or holly a procession -- Divinity that baritone diva: world changing voice, yet it teases because the voice sees that we need more orchestral food in order to understand the voice and the words of its heart and soul. The seasonings of acid-rock dissonance paint a pic of utter chaos to creation -- Meddle: Echos yet a bit more dimensional
Mirage was a fantastic album. So were many others Camel created. Many bands produce one in a lifetime. This is my favourite Camel track : creative, inspired, virtuistic and passionate. Wonderful stuff.
got a question for you, which album is better: Mirage or Moonmadness. The Snow Goose is an excellent record, but got to admit is a litle bit rigid. So, what do you think? Personally i think Mirage got more imaginative work.
When he rides, my fears subside, For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies, To find a land beyond the night. Once he wore grey, he fell and slipped away From everybody's sight. The wizard of them all, came back from his fall This time wearing white. He has a certain air, as if he's never there, But somehow far away. And though he seems afar, like a distant star. His warm he can convey.
Thanks a lot for sharing this masterpiece, this is one of my favorite Camel songs and recordings. Shame that this kind of bands are missed in time and underground . Is this on dvd? i want it!
Thanks 000Rhayder000 for the trippy music by the masters Camel. I have this DVD and enjoy playing it. Think I'll send the clip to my friends. Trip on, Jeff
Damn...I only wish I could have seen this concert. I was old enough and into prog, but I didn't find out about Camel until a bit after this. They weren't widely played in the States.
To me, Camel is the quintessential prog band. Throughout their career they covered just about the whole of what prog was about, in all its forms, structures and traits, both good and bad. But mostly good.
to those cretins who say that 1) Camel made elevator music 2) they were a 2nd division prog band - OPEN YOUR EARS AND LISTEN.
This is just about as good as music can get. I saw them on the Moonmadness tour (twice - once wasn't enough) and if I could relive one musical experience, that would be it.
Doug Ferguson was a t rex on the bass, is one of the most creative bassist i ever heard, how do you can to say that Ferguson wasnt too good?, i cant believe this!!!
Stating that Doug Ferguson was not good enough is a new world record in ignorance. The magic Camel produced within their first 4 albums can - and will never be reproduced. Each member was of equal value to the whole.
People discrediting one of the band' members appens with a lot of bands and most of the time makes no sense. Just like people ignore Nick Mason and Rick Wright's contributions in Pink Floyd, or Rutherford's genious in Genesis, and sometimes even Steve Howe in Yes, a bunch of jokers these critics are.
threads from the fabric of my life - I was in ninth grade when Moonmadness came out, and I listened to it with my senheisser open-air headphones in the dark quite often, so their music really brings goosebumps after all these years. This was when I first got into FM radio and "Progressive Rock." sO Nice t see these videos, thank you!
you mean he wasn't a virtuoso bass player? he was not and he didn't care to become one. he was a gifted musician though. and with whatever little skill he had, he was able to provide uniquely realized and beautifully delivered tunes, as if he was able to make unfitting stuff fit perfectly within the songs, infusing the later with even more personality and atmosphere.
i haven't heard another bass player playing the bass with that same unique and beloved style of doug ferguson.
I grew up in San Diego and it seemed at the time that the California coast was the only section of the country that even knew who camel was! Mirage and Snow Goose were my favs back then. I always saw Camel ,(while definitely original), as kind of a cross between The Moody Blues and Early Pink Floyd. Loved seeing this!
The story I've always read and heard (esp. on the Camel Curriculum Vitae DVD) was that Andy Ward wanted to change the sound and Doug didn't want to go in that direction, so he threatened to leave if they didn't get rid of Doug, and Andrew and Peter VERY reluctantly went along with Andy. Sinclair was a more talented bass player and singer, but his personality grated on Peter especially, so Peter left. You should buy the CV DVD - it's at Amazon. Includes reunion of Doug, Andrew and Andy in 2003.
Absolutely! Did you know they kicked him out of the band because Andy Ward wanted Camel to have a "better" bass player? Richard Sinclair totally changed the band's sound and chemistry, enough to drive Peter to leave. I wonder if they ever asked Doug back, realizing their mistake? Well, at least Andrew, Andy and Doug have made peace with each other and are recording again.
I have to say: Where the smeg has the art in music gone? Compare the likes of Camel, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Gryphon, and the more accessible Pink Floyd with the generic crap that is the music of today!
I know music, like art, is subjective, but still...

That Mini-Moog / Hammond B3 solo... No one but Peter Bardens (may he rest in peace) can/could do that. I've checked out SO many fantastic keyboard players, but not ONE can do what that man did. And Andy Latimer on the guitar... It doesn't get better. Oh wait, it does. Andy Ward on drums! And Doug Ferguson on bass. Perfection.
jashka23,que bueno llevas toda la razon, estos son fantasticos...para mi el Mirage es uno de los mejores albums de la historia del rock.todo entero, sin desperdicio, igual pasa con rush y Saga(mis otras bandas fav). salu2.

Amazingly, I ran into a guy at the FMPM prog fest in Montreal just a year ago who was at the same shows!
hmmmm i wonder if this was the song that finished the concert? it one of my favorites, seriously now, mirage, snow goose, and moonmadness are 3 essentials of proggresive rock, and the only albums these guys need to be in my top prog. rockers list

Im not gonna repeat!, saying just how good this song is. I only wish some crazy genius out there would think of putting together a HIGH QUALITY video with this and images from the LOTR movies!
Everyone that hasn't seen this has missed one of music finest performances and songs. Bardens's solo is SO incredible and Andy Latimer is as always the best guitarist and they fit perfect together. There's been a lot of songs inspired by Lord of the Rings, but this is the best one! =)
Everyone that hasn't seen this has missed one of music finest performances and songs. Bardens's solo is SO incredible and Andy Latimer is as always the best guitarist and they fit perfect together. There's been a lot of songs inspired by Lord of the Rings, but this is the best one! =)
this video should be watched, the song should be listened, twice or more in a day.. as a medicine, as a fairytale, as a fantastic story, as a unbeliavable truth.. wonderfull.. this is my favourite one..
A lot of ppl say Snow Goose is best but it has no words. I started w/ the single comp. A Compact Collection. Then, I got Mirage. It's excellent. Have their 1st 5 studio albums
These two Camel clips do not have the quality they deserve. Finally camelproductions[DoT]com will release these recordings on DVD. When they do these videos might get removed. Buy the DVD's,and support Camel.
Happy the Man, King Krimson, Yes, et al notwithstanding, Mirage defined "progressive rock" moreso than any other recording I've ever heard. All five tracks are masterpieces, and White Rider may be the best single prog cut ever recorded. I agree that the segue between the begining procession into the spacey guitar riff is the best single part of this tune. And what a perfect voice for prog too. I sure hope Andrew's health issues do not overtake him. RIP Peter. You are sorely missed.
Actually there is live version of Mystic Queen on the Mirage reissue that was put out @ the time of Pete Bardens' death. It from the Marquee club in '74
i can't get enough of the part in the recording when the fanfare breaks into the strings and guitar. Not quiote in the video, but it's still pretty amazing
Classic lineup of an amazingly underrated band. This song is a personal favorite! Andy Ward is such an excellent drummer. It's nice to see how humanity has gone from stuff like this to My Chemical Romance and Avril Lavigne.

Prog inspired by Harry Potter?

Everyone that hasn't seen this has missed one of music finest performances and songs. Bardens's solo is SO incredible and Andy Latimer is as always the best guitarist and they fit perfect together. There's been a lot of songs inspired by Lord of the Rings, but this is the best one! =)

Haven't heard Camel very much but this is my favorite song what I've heard. Favorite of all songs in the world what I've heard.

peter frampton tried to take credit for Camel once saying they were his back-up band... as if
louisebakalik 4 years ago
No. Different band named Camel. Framptons Camel was his solo album from '73. The formation of THIS Camel probably made him drop the name

start with Mirage then Lady Fantasy. We used to do acid and listen to Camel and have sooo much fun

this video should be watched, the song should be listened, twice or more in a day.. as a medicine, as a fairytale, as a fantastic story, as a unbeliavable truth.. wonderfull.. this is my favourite one..

A lot of ppl say Snow Goose is best but it has no words. I started w/ the single comp. A Compact Collection. Then, I got Mirage. It's excellent. Have their 1st 5 studio albums
JIF882 4 years ago
Their first five are stellar and flawless in my opinion. I know of no other band where I actually enjoy every song on each album.

These two Camel clips do not have the quality they deserve. Finally camelproductions[DoT]com will release these recordings on DVD. When they do these videos might get removed. Buy the DVD's,and support Camel.

> Happy the Man ...
Can you say "Kit Watkins"? ;-)
> Mirage defined "progressive rock"
I totally agree.
damnibefamous 4 years ago
Happy the Man, King Krimson, Yes, et al notwithstanding, Mirage defined "progressive rock" moreso than any other recording I've ever heard. All five tracks are masterpieces, and White Rider may be the best single prog cut ever recorded. I agree that the segue between the begining procession into the spacey guitar riff is the best single part of this tune. And what a perfect voice for prog too. I sure hope Andrew's health issues do not overtake him. RIP Peter. You are sorely missed.

Mystic Queen was on Camel's first lp, not on Mirage!

Actually there is live version of Mystic Queen on the Mirage reissue that was put out @ the time of Pete Bardens' death. It from the Marquee club in '74

i can't get enough of the part in the recording when the fanfare breaks into the strings and guitar. Not quiote in the video, but it's still pretty amazing
ofdarknessandlight 4 years ago
Actually, the "strings" R mellotron
JIF882 4 years ago
I know. But they're string samples. hence I said strings :D

Classic lineup of an amazingly underrated band. This song is a personal favorite! Andy Ward is such an excellent drummer. It's nice to see how humanity has gone from stuff like this to My Chemical Romance and Avril Lavigne.
