First, the guy at 1:53 on the bicycle, it sort of looks like he flips the tank commander the bird before riding off. He definitely holds up his hand in some sort of gesture.

Second, the guy at 2:05 in the blue shirt who helped escort Tank Man away, it looks as though he turns back to the tank and urges them forward on their mission. Which would suggest that he was indeed a member of the Public Security Bureau. Which suggests Tank Man's dead.

The army could have avoided a lot of the embarrassment if the other tanks would have just driven around this one...one person can only block one tank. The fact this they allowed one person's actions to basically stop the army in its tracks made them look pretty impotent...until they proceeded to beat the fuck out of every protester in the square.

@navid500 I'm assuming the lead tank is the tank commander. If the tank commander is held up he can't accompany the other tanks to give them orders, so stopping the command tank effectively stops the whole column.

@mongorians22 ...maybe that's the case when tanks are going to bust a protest, but that can't be the procedure for tanks in warfare. Otherwise, the enemy could stop an entire convoy by disabling the lead vehicle, and the entire convoy would be sitting ducks. I've never been in the military, so I'm not by any means knowledgeable on the topic. I just watched the clip and thought to myself that the lone rebel's actions would have been less effective if the other tanks had gone on.

@navid500 Actually, in the days of WW2 the Tank commander was the only one with a radio, so he was a high priority target, and if he was hit the whole convoy had no communication. The tanks in the video probably are modern tanks that all have radios, but I'm guessing that the Chinese military has a hierarchical command and control chain. if the other tanks had gone on, they wouldn't have been able receive their orders from someone who knew their situation on the ground (the tank commander).
