You start off with a nice stroke or two then go to crap. Why going so fast? Also elite paper cutting comes with a wire edge also so it is a pretty bad test.
Good vid, for those of you sharpening a 710, use only the sharp/angular profiled edge of the rod. Dont want to lose that sexy albeit hard to sharpen recurve. You think not using the flat (more aggressive) edgeon the 710 is part of the difficulty? Have started edc inga milli cause I am not happy with the edge on my BM. Only have the two sets of rods.
I'm considering buying a Spyderco Sharpmaker but I don´t know what kind of rods would be better for my ZDP-189 and S30V blades. Are many different kinds of diamond Spyderco rods?
A good technique to tell where the rods are hitting the edge is to take a sharpie and cover the secondary bevel and do 5-15 strokes, look on the sharpied area to see where the rods are removing metal. Also helps if freehanding.
Very awesome, I have the sharpmaker. I'm sort of used to it. It's a easy, fast sharpening system that pretty much anyone can use. It probably wont get the best edge. But it will put a really nice edge for those who aren't that experienced sharpening free handed or just dont have the time.
for the benchmade, you should go diamond, then fine, then ultra fine, then take it to the strop. but for absolute best results (it will also take longer) go diamond, coarse, fine, ultra fine, strop and doing that would make it even more than shaving sharp. a convexed blade is also a good idea, if you watch kylie's vids you might have seen his explanation on that. but for the sharpest blade i suggest you send it to Kylie, i believe he is the best knife sharpener out there.
Thanks. I thought about the diamond/ultrafine, but I didn't think it was worth it. Looks like you have good results with them so I have to reconsider.

You do realize that the sharpmaker only offers 30/40' angles, right?

sorry I am a noob but whats a belt stropper? or w.e its called? and whats it do
Darkstar2520 1 year ago
@Darkstar2520 its just a thick piece of raw leather. You may have seen one in a barber shop. I personally use the backside of an old leather belt.

@CreativeOutletHobbie - for my carving chisels, and kitchen knives, I use my palm to break the final burr.

Spyderco is a 30 degree angle, to help you keep your 40 degree without having to wear your blade down.Nice Video

Why are you skipping the medium and fine rods? maybe that will get your edges to where your desire.

seven47katana 1 year ago
is there any virtue to going from Diamond, to Medium to Fine to Ultra fine like one would do with whetstones?

What reason do you skip the grey and white when using the diamond rods?

Do you use an actual strop? I was wondering if an old leather belt would work.

I mentioned in the video that I use an old belt for stropping.

@mongomondomongo start with the ultrafine. Diamond are good but really just for special projects, re-profiling.
