I think "Cobra and Phases..." is the Groop's most experimental and hence most misunderstood album (has anyone read the infamous Pitchfork review?) "Sound-Dust" was a quite underwhelming and unsatisfying followup for me. Wish they made more albums exploring territories like those on "Cobra and Phases..."
And everytime that I hear a song of Stereolab, or McCarthy for that matter, these perfectly shaped pearls of pop music, so intricately executed, so rich in their simpleness, I smile to myself and think: "Goddamnit, and to think that Tim Gane started out with Uncommunity." And then I pop on something by thee un-kommuniti, my face melts off, I suffocate from my own blood, and them I am in true bliss.
I didn't say Techno can't be beautiful. I personally love techno, esp. Detroit Techno, which is beautiful. However, my point was that Stereolab is not Techno. And furthermore, they are a group of outstanding musicians, who happen to make beautiful music. That was all :)
This video almost looks like as if it was shot on hand-developed film (and possibly off a tv monitor as well) , it has that mottled, dirty, solarized look that a film developed outside of a proper lab (and in a bathtub or other improvised implement) looks like, which is quite unique, I must add... ;) It adds a unique aesthetic ot the video (one of Stereolab's best songs IMO).
the song Umbrellas is by the group The Free Design (and the original sounds alien compared to the Peanut Butter Wolf version), this group is Stereolab.
Good music doesn't have a color booundary...(so I thought)...I still like R&B (though not the new stuff) and Hip-Hop (not rap, especially what they play now) I like all music, if it's good music...
I don't care if they ever made another video, this is just good music Stereolab is one of the best groups I ever heard. Their creativity is beyond comparison. In all the years I've followed this group, I never heard anything like them. They're in a league of their own.
Surreal video.... totally love it! Why spend fortunes on a video when you can be creative and original and make a video like this that totally holds your attention from start to finish....
They were soooo cool. I was given an advance copy of dots and loops, and immediately bought everything they did. When this came out i flipped! It was like sergio medez meets the doors or something.....very different band, indeed. Saw them at the wiltern and will never forget it. Thanx!
i saw this band in nashville at the mercury lounge... also saw them at sudsy malones in cincinnati a looooong time ago. at nashville, i could have reached out and touched any of them, the show was that intimate. i told the lead singer during the opening band 'have a good show' and she said with a smile, 'thank you very much'. i almost passed out. i heart you stereolab.
What a great tribute to a great band. Yay free design! Hat's off to Stereolab. Video's cool but I'm in it for the music. :) And what's up with nay-sayers? I don't know why so many modern listeners have an allergic reaction to music that makes you tap your toes and feel good...
If you liked this tune - you'll love the real Free Design. They've a long history of under appreciation, but don't lat that stop you. Definite ear candy! Enjoy!
Great song - I love the 70's prog rock influence. Check out the rhythm and arrangement of Pig by Soft Machine - either big influence or huge coincidence.
Has anyone noticed a pattern in Stereolab song titles? they tend to not have to do with the lyrics but more to do with either musical/sound equipment and terms (often used in their songs) or other influences.

Is it just me, or does this sound exactly like "Michigan" or "Illinois"-era Sufjan Stevens? Really, it's the other way around.

This tune's got a lot of madlib vibe to it. something to the likes of "all caps", "slim's return" and "monkey suite".
