The problem really is why aren't game developers really tapping into this sort of quality levels... perhaps it is the number of gamers who actually own these kind of GPUs... I remember "Crysis" - - they pushed the jungle realism. Screenshots of incredibly detailed 3D leafs. When the game was finally released, the plants and all were flat though still very much pleasant.
I would love to see a game to showcase all the capabilities of an Nvidia GPU (including Cuda tech...). Not just tech demos.
@defaultname365 The problem with that idea is any game made exclusively for NVidia cards would elliminate around 50% of the PC gaming market who use ATi's cards.... so really I think OGL 3.2 and DX11 are the only two viable hardware interface languages devs can actually use as they conform to both ATi and NVidia architecture. Optimization is more important than just saying "well use Cuda to hide the dev's lack of coding prowess"
i loved what nvidia did for particls and smoke and other wow stuff , but i will buy nvidia hardcore card when that can be in some realtey games now a days , hope to see some game like gta working like real life , becase no point of showing that and i'm getting back to play with some crappy games with no phisics acurat playing around
Not even close, so far Clear Sky and Hellgate are the only games that feature volumetric smoke (apparently) and none of those have the shadows or look as good
Volumetric fog, coulds and smoke! Of course its not that good and there is no shadow from it, but it is volumetric. Try blowing car and then look at sun thru that smoke. It looks awesome. Also try makeing a lot of smoke and runing around it.
It looks abstract in this simulation, but it will provide realistic dust, smoke, foam and other materials that are typically extremely difficult to render realistically.
It's one of those ahead of the game simulations. Within a few years, I'm positive hardware will reach a point that such complex effects will be commonplace. Moore's law is, after all, still in effect.
look up "NS2 engine preview" its a video of the upcoming game Natural Selection 2. It has Volumetric light of sorts.. I really don't know the technical details and I KNOW its no where near as dense as what's being shown here but it does look really nice and I can't remember see in any other games aside from some hack.
This is completely real-time. I just ran it from the Cuda demos, on my 8800 GT, and it ran beautifully. It also ran at a solid 60 FPS! It looked just as good, if not better than the video.
where do you get it from? i look at the description link but it didn't sound like it was the program thats in the video and i don't want to be downloading something HUGE and find out it is not it.
Actually it's not much more expensive than what most game systems use right now. You have to sort the particle billboards a bit differently, but other than that it's just a combination of tricks that look nice.
There was a presentation about this exact demo at the GDC '09. I think the slides are available on the site, though you may have to hunt for them somewhat.
this looks really cool. i've just started getting into cuda and completed a few exercises on the nvidia site, and i hope to port my simulations to cuda when i get more familiar with it.

@RustyBinProductions Lol.....hey, don't use C++ because you should really be using assembler. ;)

what GPU is this? none of the videos or descriptions specify the GPU.

I think this was recorded on a GeForce GTX 280, but it runs on any GeForce 8 or later.

Crysis have volumetric smoke, of course.

It has volumetric fog, but when a car blows up even the DX10 smoke is still not ... like this..., it's got like Z-feather though

But at what cost? Add the million other things a gpu much carry out, what will be left for this pretty nice smoke sim?

look for the nvidia tesla, (uses cuda)
processing power up to 4 teraflops which is about 250 times your standard desktop computer's processing power.
it's crazy

i already knew about the tesla but i thought that was for something else >.>

It's in the Cuda SDK. And it is slightly large.
Zalo10 2 years ago
do i need anything special to run it
laputahayom 2 years ago
Well, you need an Nvidia card that is 8800 GT or above, And you need CUDA compatible drivers.
