I doubt it. That's some pretty accurate flying right there, all things considered. A lot of British pilots during the Battle of Britain didn't have much training. There were a few really good pilots (who would have been better when you include gunmanship and tactical combat flying to just raw acrobatics), but the chances of them having flown this particular spitfire are slim.
Excuse me for being an anorak, but I measured the spitfire's altitude in the last frame where it's complete wingspan is visible ( utilising it's shadow, and the fact that the spitfire's wingspan is 11 metres ), and it is 1.7 metres off the ground ... bloody hell !!!
Incredible video, I was expecting the Spitfire to be miles off in the sky! Scared the crap out of me, the film crew and presenter have balls of steel, the pilot must have been incredible!
Haha i've seena Spitfire flying just once (never been to an airshow) and the sound of them is just fantastic! I'd love to have been standing there, although not looking at the spitfire coming right for me! Ad
I lived in High wycombe, bucks, England. Booker airfield had one of the few remaining flyable Spitfires. I will NEVER forget the sound of the Merlin X engine as it flew over head!!
well...sure there is a pilot that is able to fly a plane in 3 feet high without crashin it, but the reporter would have looked to the back before he went down
That's no fake. It's as genuine as any Apollo photograph taken on the Moon. It's also a very funny clip, and the Rolls Royce Merlin is still the most beautiful-sounding engine ever made.
HOLY CRAP!! it looked like he was only about 3 feet off the ground before he started pulling up! i don't think i'd have the balls to fly that low (if i was a pilot).
Fuck me!

The Spit misses his head by no more than 10 feet.Sound a lot?Remember the prop diameter.Any lower and he'd be wearing a crew-cut.

The sound of the Merling engine really does make you want to bow :)

its actually a griffin engine mate...u can tell by the growling sound. it was the more powerful engine found in later marks.
scotty907 5 years ago
It's not a Griffon. If it's Ray Hanna flying it, it's MH434, a Merlin 60 engined MKIX and one of the best of the breed.

All still from the Rolls Royce stable though... great sounds engines all round :)

Shitty death! if you pause the clip just as the spit casts the first shadow its gotta be only 2 feet from the ground.!!!
It looks like he starts to pull up from there. Great skill!

Since the late Ray Hanna was the Pilot - it definitely was that close - ask anybody, who was at the first ever Goodwood Circuit Revival !!!

It's probably a forced perspective. That spitfire isn't as close to the reporter as it seems...close, but not dangerously close.

I believe this is Ray Hannah (RIP) flying the Spit. He was one of the best Spitfire pilots I have ever witnessed. Rest in Peace Ray!

MarsFKA - I couldn't agree more. I think they should still make Spits for recreational flying.
