Plug it up! Plug it up! Who could forget that part?! Certain parts of King's books always stick with me. Like that part in The Dark Half where the surgeon see's the eye blink at him in Thad's brain. Or when Roland blows away the whole town in the Gunslinger. SK's a master at painting vivid pictures in your mind.
I don't like the book that much, but the movie is a masterpiece. However, without the book - there would be no movie. So - THANK GOD Mrs. King saved it!
My name is 'Carrie', I was working the 'Night Shift' at the 'Pet Semetary'. It was 'Full Dark No Stars' outside. I turned around and that's when I saw 'IT'. A big red car, it was 'Shining'. I walked over to it and looked inside. I screamed, it was 'The Boogeyman'!
I remember seeing "IT" on tv, and I knew I had to read the book. It was the first adult book I ever read. If you've ever seen how big "it" is, you can imagine it took awhile..lol
Ever since i wached the movie it iv been enspired by stephen king i decided to read the book WAY better than the movie iv been reading his books and now i think i mite start wrighting stephen king is a one of a kind there will never be a wrighter like him
@DoctorWho1983 maybe sounds funny to you, but when he wrote "running man" he did as Richard Bachman, and as I understood, bachman was a different guy ( the dark half of king`s mind )...my 1st book of SK was "it" my brother gave it to me when I was 10 at 1990...now I have maybe the half of his books...
Bachman was done as publicity stunt by stephen king, it wasn't an altered ego or any of that. He's just that good and likes messing with peoples heads
@DoctorWho1983 you cant deny the fact that If bachman`s true ID was never revealled, I wonder how many awesome books we have on that reality...try Rage as example, the long run...SK admit that Bachman`s had a different energy...and human mind still an unsolved mystery...of course now everyone knows Bachman and King are the same guy, but back then...

I used to love King when I was pre-teen to mid-teens. He is one of the best horror/terror writers I've read (though I've never actually read Poe or Stoker or Mary Shelley). But for some years, struggled to finish a new novel of his. I found the familiarity of his style lessened my interest. Thankfully, have now read some of those I ignored and re-visited some old favourites. But his best is, in my opinion, no better than the best of Straub, Herbert or even Koontz (the Odd Thomas series).
I love writing, I love reading, I love taking an interest in the world and I love debating subjects, that I often forget are controversal...and I'm the only person in my year level that actually does so far. I can't wait until I leave school and go to uni and find some of my people.
Stephen Kiing was the only one that convenced me to start writing. He is the best writer for me personally. I love his work and I wish to recommend his work to anyone considers creative writing, seriously. He is one of the Greatest writers ever!

@poeticmurder911 omg please the title is "ON" writing, implying he is discussing suggestions on writing. It is not called "HOW TO" write. He is merely reflecting on the artform.
i do not think creativity can be taught as such but a lot o writers like little excercises to spur them on,or to learn about plot, structure, theme, dialogue and how to present work proessionally plus feedback fro other writers.I do like stephen kings work
@deathbyslipknot Ironic how one demanding someone else shows respect fails to do the very same thing.
Kindly go fuck yourself, for however 'cruel' my statement may be, it does not change the fact Stephen King is one ugly mother fucker, and the fact he can write doesn't change that, either.
@TBeanIV I didn't realize so many people would be butthurt I pointed out that Stephen King bears an uncanny resemblance to a Who, and so stupid that calling him an ugly son of a bitch automatically translates to me insulting his skills as a writer.
@BoydTheMilkmanX obviously your the dipshit cause who comes on to look at a video of someone they don't even like so fuck off I'm thru with you. You got your lickin enough times
As I have said before, why his movies fall short of the novels in general is that Stephen King's most impressive ablity is not so much the plot(aside from the Gunslinger series(his Magnum Opus and long term work)), but the way he describes things and his ability to narrate like the character he is focusing on. :D
@wiggalama Agreed - and his style is very personal as well, I haven't read anyone who writes quite like him. Many authors write from the inside of the characters minds, but not like the way Stephen King does, his sense of psychology is wonderful that way. The way he writes the persons thoughts and reactions to everything happening, just like they percieve them in the moment, even filled with short impulses interrupting their chain of thoughts.
@IndieMovieChannel The guy's blessed with a fertile imagination, a work ethic second to none and the ability to type clean copy quickly...That's how it gets written.
@IndieMovieChannel: That's Stephen King for you; his productivity is his most impressive trait, second only to his imagination. He's not the best "writer" per se, but he certainly is one of the best story-tellers, and that, combined with his output, is what makes him so great.
Especially his sly reference to needing other writers for company - for a while. Franky, most amateur novelists suck - as does their thinking process, which drags you down into bandwagon chasing mediocrity.
@TreyRoque I think the greatest thing holding back amateur writers is their fear of writing badly..They want the FIRST draft to be as good as what they read in the novels of their favourite authors and that's completely unrealistic...Writers need ti understand that their first novel or poems or whatever are going to suck...and then you work past that...
@trinitymike: Words of wisdom my man. I know I felt that way at first--expecting my rough drafts to be flawless works of art. It is, like you said, unrealistic as hell.
It's quite a shame if King ever got hassled or rejected for being "in the ozone" as he put it. He has such a gift and thankfully was able to share it with both his students and his readers. It would be great to just observe him as he gets an idea, sits down at the typewriter or computer and beings the process. The drags on the cigarette - if he still smokes, the looks out the window as he struggles with a character's name or description, maybe taking something like bank slips out of his wallet
I would kill to get a creative writing lesson from Stephen King. The fact that some stupid Twilight fuckers say that Stephanie Meyer is a better writer than Stephen King literally makes me feel sick.
@DaniiD51: Funny you say that, yet in this very video he says that creative writing can't be taught, and all he has to say is that you have to read a lot and write a lot. But yeah, it is pretty disgusting that people say that Meyer is a better writer than the King of horror. 'Salems Lot = real vampire story Twilight = fake pussy teenager vampire story
Writing cannot be taught. Absolutely correct. Can't put in what God left out. Another gem of King's : "Read a lot; Write a lot.", and "A writer writes."
I'm actually crying with laughter and it wasn't even funny 'I used to joke, 'xcept it wasn't a joke'. Neither was that line, but for some reason I found it hilarious!
I partly agree with him about teaching creative writing, but I partly disagree.
Especially if you think teaching is giving black-and-white instructions instead of showing approaches and giving feedback from an adult writer's perspective. I'd much rather get feedback from someone who has a job in the field than work alone in my room or get advice solely from peers. After my poetry workshop run by a writing professor my abilities and approaches radically changed for the better.
Anybody notice how King's gestures, voice, and word choice seem to be like Nicholson as Jack Torrance during the interview scene in Kubrick's The Shining?
Stephen King IS THE KING even when there are so many other writers out there who are also good or best in their genre but for me the best horror writer is and will be Stephen King!!
Writing can't be taught, but it can be learned. A teacher's best (and perhaps only) constructive role is to take the person that has all the energy, and talent and tools, and point them in the right direction.
That's true you can't teach someone to be a great artist whether its writing, music, painting or filmmaking You either have the talent or you don't.Some people think they will go to the best Art school and automatically become successful It doesn't work that way
Carrie was bought by the first publisher it was sent to. It was when he was WRITING it that he had issues ; Stephen himself threw away the manuscript and his wife fished it out and encouraged him to continue.
yeah! I heard that when stephen king took carrie to a publisher, he threw it in the trash. So, stephen looked around other places then one company finally published it
Stephen King really does have a point, that creative writing can't be "taught".
I think it's something that people just have a natural talent for...I've been writing since I was in kindergarden (needless to say they were picture books then), and I'm currently working on what I hope to be my debut novel.
But, see, I don't have any talent with sports or talking to people...I'm what you might call wierd.
When I write, my brain become overloaded with informations, it's like I'm living inside my head and it's quite hard to switch it off. Always thinking about the next line, the next chapter, how many more pages before the end. It's exhausting and exilirating in the same time.
The book to The Shining is good, and the film isn't bad. But I've seen better adaptations of King's books. For example: Stand by Me, Needful Things, Storm of the Century, Salem's Lot, The Stand and The Green Mile.
..and The Green Mile and Shawshank and Stand By Me and The Shining and Misery? The guy has written so many great books that have been made into great films.
I sort of agree with King about the Shining movie. The movie itself was good, but wasn't explained enough. For those that never had read the novel, it was confusing. It is one hell of a book though.
people who say that The Shining was a bad movie are true King fans, because they know how much Kubrick made his own version, and not Kings book version.
The Stand 'Salems lot Carrie The Dark Tower series(Amazing) The cell Green Mile The shining Cujo Bag of Bones Stephen King is the shit And Barlow is scary!
Love Sk. My personal favorites from the 8 books I've read of his: 1. Bag of Bones, 2. Pet Sematary, 3. Gerald's Game (yes, I liked it, lol. I know most people think it's one of his worst, but I found the whole experience facinating. Least favs? I'd have to so far go with Cell and Dreamcatcher. I liked Cell better, though.
The Shining's a great movie. Some people get upset that it's not the same as the book.. but it's a well established fact now that films never live up to the book when directors try to copy them. Kubrick did a great job putting it on film and his use of light in that movie is the best I've seen.
I'm reading Salem's Lot now it is AWESOME!!!!!! it is sad when Sandy McDougalls child Randy dies and when the Glick brothers die and their mom turns into a vampire
The reaction Sandy has when her baby dies it´s one of the most disturbing scenes King has ever writen, with all and all, though not my favorite SK book, i´ve enjoyed some parts of it, the ones you mention are quite disturbing.
King seems to make good advice , but just like his writing when you look into it, it is quite shallow and nonsensical. And creepy.

@herebethetruth You know every character that is a writer that King wrote about is based on himself so no shit he'd act like him.

@herebethetruth
king wrote the book the shining describing himself. :)

Stephen King IS THE KING even when there are so many other writers out there who are also good or best in their genre but for me the best horror writer is and will be Stephen King!!

he needs to take some courses on how to write without using filler. king is ove-rated.

Great words. Thanks for posting this video. When was this interview broadcast? Is there a full version of this on YouTube?

spotdathief 2 years ago

Stephen King really does have a point, that creative writing can't be "taught".
I think it's something that people just have a natural talent for...I've been writing since I was in kindergarden (needless to say they were picture books then), and I'm currently working on what I hope to be my debut novel.
But, see, I don't have any talent with sports or talking to people...I'm what you might call wierd.

weird people are the foundation of creativity. we're all weird in our own ways.

When I write, my brain become overloaded with informations, it's like I'm living inside my head and it's quite hard to switch it off. Always thinking about the next line, the next chapter, how many more pages before the end. It's exhausting and exilirating in the same time.

The Shining is the best horror movie with The Thing, Jaws, Omen, but The Shining is great movie in my top 10 movie all time
kusta9 2 years ago
The book to The Shining is good, and the film isn't bad. But I've seen better adaptations of King's books. For example: Stand by Me, Needful Things, Storm of the Century, Salem's Lot, The Stand and The Green Mile.
sophieliz1990 2 years ago
I agree, Sophieliz. But how about 'The Shawshank Redemption"?
HarvsPenzance 2 years ago
OMG I love that film. I can't believe I forgot about that XD. Yeah I have to say that is a really good film and the story is good as well.
sophieliz1990 2 years ago
..and The Green Mile and Shawshank and Stand By Me and The Shining and Misery? The guy has written so many great books that have been made into great films.
Sheza58 2 years ago 3
I sort of agree with King about the Shining movie. The movie itself was good, but wasn't explained enough. For those that never had read the novel, it was confusing. It is one hell of a book though.

The 1997 version of The Shining was the best terror movie I have seen.

heya sexy :] asl?
Emyrsaurus 2 years ago
people who say that The Shining was a bad movie are true King fans, because they know how much Kubrick made his own version, and not Kings book version.
GiantsSB2010 2 years ago
The movie itself was incredible tho'. People often underrate the depth and subliminal detail in that movie.

Great psychologist. He is what Stalin (as much as I hate to refere to the Soviet dictator) would call "an engineer of the human mind."

Absolutely loved The Shining (not he film, the film was horrible) and bag of Bones, as well as The Girl Who Loved tom Gordon.

The Shining is indeed a very poor movie.

The Shining a very poor movie???
What are you talking about??
The Shining is a great movie and represents horror in many many ways
Cwall96 2 years ago 3
The Shining's a great movie. Some people get upset that it's not the same as the book.. but it's a well established fact now that films never live up to the book when directors try to copy them. Kubrick did a great job putting it on film and his use of light in that movie is the best I've seen.

Oh my god are you kidding? lol.
God I love ''The Shinning'' it's a classic!
But owell, each to his own I suppose.

A poor adaptation maybe, but not a poor movie. The depth kubrick went into was clearly wasted on some.

I've read three of his books
Carrie 10/10
The Girl Who loved Tom Gordon 8.5/10
The Long Walk 8/10
He's awesome!

I'm reading Salem's Lot now it is AWESOME!!!!!! it is sad when Sandy McDougalls child Randy dies and when the Glick brothers die and their mom turns into a vampire
hinderrulez100 2 years ago 2
The reaction Sandy has when her baby dies it´s one of the most disturbing scenes King has ever writen, with all and all, though not my favorite SK book, i´ve enjoyed some parts of it, the ones you mention are quite disturbing.
