What is your view/opinion on moon clips? I just got an S&W bodyguard .38 that I'm planning to use for everyday carry and was contemplating whether or not I wanted to send the cylinder out to be machined for moon clips. After watching this video, It got me thinking that I could have a loaded clip or in my pocket and reload without worrying about jet-loaders and/or speed loaders emptying before I get them in or malfunctioning (plus the added bulk would make it harder to conceal).
WOW.........I cant believe he hit that 80 yard target with a 642. I don't think people realize how very very hard those are to shoot. I have one and Im only good out to about 12 feet with it.
they called the .38 special back in the day "the widow-maker". because you could empty all ur rounds in some one and he stell could get to u and make your wife a widow. FYI
@jled525 what does the 500 S&W have to do with what I wrote. i did not mention the 500 or praized it. i mearly stated what was the .38 like. you can find several articals about the .38 when it was issued to the police long time ago and read for yourself how unreliable it was. and BTW 500 magnum sucks even more, i find it completly for show and nothing more.
I am female with 3 1/4 wrap. I actually own one of those 1982 issued police 357 with grip. Bulky thing. It was fun at the time. I am looking to buy something smart and personal. I am light lifted and need the top weight. I held the SW 38 airlite today. I think it may be too light in weight. So I am not sure how to balance my control. Do you have any suggestions?
I do not quite get the hammer-less point. If I lived in the US and needed to use my revolver for self defense I would cock the hammer if I had time. Much more accurate that way. But of course it depends on the situation.
@PhantomTD I thought the same thing until I read an article written by a former cop discussing various self-defense shooting cases he has seen and how the prosecution has tried to nail the shooters. One way was by claiming the shooter had the hammer cocked and tapped the trigger without proper target identification. He recommended getting a DA only revolver so they could not try this on you.
Nice informative vid I love revolvers too my fab is the .44 then .357 then third I'd have to say .500 and what is this place that your shooting at and filming at?
I'm a 17 year veteran Police Officer and I carry my j-frame model 638 everywhere i go. Sometimes pocket sometimes inside the pants and it works good on a ankle and in my vest, ofcourse lately my wife has stolen it from me so i tote around my Ruger SP101..the advantage to my model is the hammer is shrouded so you can still cock it for single action for target shooting.
idk id rather buy a small frame 357 for the versatility. granted you wont find one as small as the 642 but a ruger sp101 is a good contender and a better one in my opinion.
And don't forget to mention that revolvers never fail to feed, suffer stove pipes or otherwise leave you standing there with a fancy paperweight in your hand when the SHTF.
Great little gun. I purchased a Taurus .357 but I find it to be too big to pocket comfortably. The airweight however is a perfect size for pocket carry.
Who says revolvers are outdated? Piss on them! I love revolvers. I am actually going to be purchasing either the 642 S&W or a 617 Taurus as my next piece. Can't decide lol
@Aaotrom go with the smith and wesson if you have the money,if you dont taurus are all right, but i wouldnt trust my life on them, ive had bad experiences before with taurus, especially the Rossi brand by braztech,.,the taurus guns that are awesome and work reliably are the PT92,PT1911 in my own opinion,i had a 24/7 pro once and it worked flawlessly but i have read to many bad reviews on them,i couldve been real lucky and gotten a very good one.
My buddy has the 617 and carries it all the time. I really like the .357 option since its my favorite rd to shoot. I have a 24/7 pro that I carry all the time. I've put well over 7k rds through it and have had 2 stove pipes during the break in period. I think 2 out of over 7,000 is a very reliable piece. I think too many people just have to put their "2 cents" to justify spending more money on the same gun with a more popular name.
@Aaotrom i agree taurus and rossi firearms are fine weapons, yet in the end,any type of unreliable weapon in our posession is better than having anything at all..but im just a little to worried of the fact that my 2 taurus revolvers and 1 rossi have jammed on me..nothing serious, all i needed to do to unjam them was tap the cylinder out while pressing the latch..do you have any idea why this happens? i dont own my taurus anymore but i did keep my .357 Rossi 4in and this happens almost all the time
This is true. I don't keep any unreliable firearms though. If I have any problem that I can't correct with some sanding or polishing I will turn it in for repairs and if i still experience problems I will sell the thing after the second "repairs". My guess to your Rossi is that the cylinder might be jammed up with debris. Do you strip the entire gun down when cleaning? A lot of "unreliable guns" are due to improper maintenance. I take my guns down completely and have 0 problems
I would suggest you take the gun completely apart. Sand some rough spots and if you want. Dremel them with some Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. Oil obviously. Just because its a revolver doesn't mean it doesn't need oil. Reassemble and then take it to the range. I had problem with a feed ramp on my gun and polished it to a mirror shine and have zero problems now. Maintenance is key to a functioning firearm
@Aaotrom i rather not, last time i tried playing the gunsmith role i messed up my rossi lmfao i had to send it back to rossi because i could not put it back together, and they took care of it ,no questions asked, and had it back in less than a week..what i really dont do is lubricate my rossi with oil, until now,i just did 10 minutes ago,and everything seems to move and spin very smooth, maybe that has been the problem all this time,im going to try it tomorrow and see how it goes from there.
Its hardly gunsmithing. Just heavy maintenance lol. I don't mean to offend but most people don't oil their guns and they seem to think that guns are machines. but they really are. Just like a car breaks down if you don't oil it. A gun will too. And for something you are using to protect yourself and those you love you really should take better care of it. I hope everything works out and I would like to know what the results are.
@SLJJERK22 My girlfriend just got the black version 442 for a total of $406.00 ..... It had to be special ordered because she did not want the silly internal lock.
@ript2damaxx I'd love to hear what his question was. He went on criticizing hickok being a safety sally. If he's gonna be a loudmouthed idiot, I can be the loudmouth who tells him he's watching a video and to STFU. You too, if you don't understand that.
Do you have a .38 S&W Defender? I have one and cant really find any good videos on it...seems to be a nice little carry around gun...it a double action also....good videos man
Just goes to reinforce the mantra that I heard from my DI back in 1973,"better to be missed by freight train than hit by a well thrown rock". Bullet placement beats capacity every time...God bless, keep up the good work.
Why are revolvers so expensive? I've been looking at S&W .38 and .357 revolvers and they pretty much all start at around $700 where as a Glock 17 starts at around $400
A good American made revolver is like a fine ROLEX ...that survives multiple explosions with zero damage. [try that with your wristwatch]. A glock is a great service weapon that is very 'simple' and can be cheaply made. If you want a gun that will abosolutely not 'go off' [.aka Plaxico Burris with his glock] a double action S&W is the only way to go. But you have to pay for it. It is physically impossible to 'jam' a revolver. Yes ...they are 10 times more reliable than a GLOCK.
@951pete And you can explain to me and the rest of the world why it is not one single police/military force carries the 'impossible to jam' revolver. Not to mention, revolvers always fail the dirt/sand/mud test. Ten times more reliable than a Glock, I don't think so. If you have access to so some hidden info the rest of of us don't...well, I'm positive you would have mentioned it. I love my revolvers too, I just won't carry them when I have access to a beautifully engineered Glock. Have a good 1
@mds19238@mds19238 Dear Sir! The french marine commando carries .357 Manhurin revolvers, The German armed forced switched to pistols before WW I, because there were not much revolver manufacters in germany and a pistol was far more elegant, especially for officers. MP´s are normaly chambered for pistol ammunition. I think thats why revolvers are out of business in most army and police force, but in my opinion they are still equal to pistols.
Hey Hickok. So it's a weird question but do you feed hummingbirds? I've watched a ton of your videos and never noticed them before but I'm watching a couple of your revolver videos and I keep hearing the hummingbirds in the background.
@hickok45 haha! awesome. We have some feeders too and I sit and watch them dogfight sometimes and they always make that call. Thanks for all the great videos, they are very fun and informative.
@redneckgunshooter He would probably kick their tails at everything. But they have some demands he might not want to do, such as crawling under barbed wire and all the drama.
Good point about the potential legal ramifications of cocking the hammer. Two other reasons are that once you cock it, the stress of the situation may see the user discharging the revolver accidentally, it's easy to not have a ND on the range, but when it's in SA mode in a high stress situation...you never know, and if you didn't want to fire, you can't take the bullet back. Secondly, if you cock it and didn't need to fire, decocking on a live round always has a degree of danger and risk to it.
Nice shooting, for a youtube that's a refreshing change of pace. Just bought my wife a 442 today and taking her to the range Sat. Much nicer, smoother than her little Taurus 38 was.
This is a wonderful J-Frame, I just picked one up a couple weeks ago. Shoots beautifully for the size and the kick, although it demands respect is not out of control.
Great review. I like the fact that Mr. Hickok45 takes a lot of care to get the facts on the firearms he shows us and tests extremely straight. There is no BS there. And, unlike many other gun authors, this gentleman actually can shoot tremendously well! I just love this gentleman!
@hickok45 can you refer me to a link/source to where i can buy an extended magazine for my 9mm XD? i have 3 16 round mags but i want one of those higher capacity ones. if anyone else knows where i can find them then feel free to reply...
Mr Hickok, I agree with the hair trigger on a double/SA pistol. However, what if a crime occurs where a perp breaks in your house? Would it matter whether I cock the hammer back?
@hlgrice The thinking is that the double action pull is long and deliberate - in other words when you pull the trigger you are intent on firing the gun. BUT when you cock the hammer the trigger pull is extremely light so you might accidentally fire the revolver when you don't intend to.
you want some power in your hands? i just bought a S&W 360 357 scando today... shooting 357 mag rounds through it is like letting an m-80 go off in your hand. haha It was really brutal. 38 rounds are the way to go in that CCW J-frame. i cant keep a tight group with the 357 rounds out of that 11 oz hand cannon. I shot about 40 rounds of 357 for the first time out of it...maybe i will get better with time with that gun. Its just one of those things where that mag round is not very practical. haha
6:38 WOW! Sixth pull on a 5 shot cylinder - most beautiful (authentic) trigger pull with NO flinch on youtube! Certainly I am not the first person to see that. Even my wife was impressed! I love your videos hickok45.
I really like your reviews especially since you take long range into account which every seems to have forget about. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the S&W 632. I saw this gun at a local range the other day. It's a 3" 6 shot in 327 federal magnum. I researched the caliber a little was surprised to hear it has a load of 45,000psi. Speer loads a 100 grain hollow point that get 1500 fps out of rugers SP101 in the caliber. It packs quite a punch and I like the idea of a compact 6 shooter.
@ressikanflute Nope no polymer on either of these guns. The only thing stainless on the 642 is the cylinder. The frame is aluminum alloy. The 442 is the same gun except the cylinder is carbon steel. The frame is aluminum alloy like the 642. The 642 is the flat silver color and the 442 is a matte black. I happen to have the 442 and love it. I chose the black because I thought it would be more concealable. Lots of fun to shoot.
i just shot the smith and wessin yesterday for the first time it was a really good gun the 357. was the best one tht i shot. make more vids i like them. by the way, do u have the Rugar Mark 1 Pistol?
642 is my summer carry. In the pocket when I'm alone and inside the left ankle when I'm accompanied by the touchy feely types. Its width is not all that comfortable as compared to the P238 for example but, it is comforting at the ATM.
i agree with you, double action is the best way to fire in those situations. when cops carried revolvers, most departments trained them never to fire single action.
i personally like the 65, its 357, small , very handy and along with the mp 360 are the best small size 357s , im not a big fan of the 38 for revolvers (the 38 are the 9 mm if im not mistaken)
Hickok , I think any firearm capable of striking a primer would be a lethal weapon in your hands! My new snubbie is a 642-2 and it has that blasted lawyer lock. Every time I pick it up In the back of my mind I think the lock is gonna somehow engage and render it useless. I have even thought of trading it in or disabling it. I paid a premium price and they added a feature that could cause it to fail. Other than the lock I really like the little thing! I like old Smiths better.
@dafranx - Concealed carry. It can easily fit in your pocket. The shorter a pistol is, the less it interferes with your movements such as sitting down.
dont kno much about revolvers but can someone tell me whats the point of making the hammer concealed also how does this gun compare to the taurus 85 ultralite
@hulkbuster1026 An exposed hammer is one thing that could get hung up in clothing when trying to draw it from a pocket which is one of the most popular way of carrying a j frame. the small.38s like the 642 and the S &W 442 and Ruger LCR do not have that exposed hammer.
If you are confused about getting a good gun to defend yourself with, search no more. Buy a J frame [Smith and Wesson 642] and rest assured, you have a really good, simple to operate, idiot proof handgun. It has been dropping bad guys since the 1930s.
You do a great job of explaining/demonstrating this gun. What a great standard carry.
Although I have a number of 1911s, I still carry a J frame also. A GREAT gun espically for women and people who are not proficient with racking slides and clearing malfunctions.
for everyone that keeps asking whats +p, just think of it as saying + power, + pressure or + powder because essentially its a bullet with more velocity
I love your videos. I am about to obtain a .38 special (standard loads only) rossi m88 revolver. This is my first revolver so I was wondering what standard loads you would recommend, also what is the best way to maintain a revolver sch as lubrication for moving parts, the trigger assembly etc.. Thank you for any help and I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
i like to hang out in imfdb and i was looking at the dark knight guns and the 64 smith and wesson picked my interest , whats the difference between the 64 and the 65 , and also which one is better ?
im a 16 year old boy, a student who loves to wright stories and little screenplays for movies , im writing a zombie like story and i want to find a proper revolver (small revolver) for a 15-16 year old kid.
of course a kid at that age cannot carry a 44 magnum , so i was looking for a 64 S&W , a colt magnum carry (but i was informed that they dont make these any more ) or a .38 but it takes 5 rounds and that does not help my story much.
seen a few videos on revolver speedloading, and everyone seems to have trouble fitting speedloader to cilinder. what is the problem. is it that bullet is a bit thinner than case so case's edge stops on chamber's edge?
What is your view/opinion on moon clips? I just got an S&W bodyguard .38 that I'm planning to use for everyday carry and was contemplating whether or not I wanted to send the cylinder out to be machined for moon clips. After watching this video, It got me thinking that I could have a loaded clip or in my pocket and reload without worrying about jet-loaders and/or speed loaders emptying before I get them in or malfunctioning (plus the added bulk would make it harder to conceal).

Have a good 1
mds19238 3 months ago
@mds19238 @mds19238 Dear Sir!

Great review. I like the fact that Mr. Hickok45 takes a lot of care to get the facts on the firearms he shows us and tests extremely straight. There is no BS there. And, unlike many other gun authors, this gentleman actually can shoot tremendously well! I just love this gentleman!

Mr Hickok, I agree with the hair trigger on a double/SA pistol. However, what if a crime occurs where a perp breaks in your house? Would it matter whether I cock the hammer back?
hlgrice 6 months ago
@hlgrice The thinking is that the double action pull is long and deliberate - in other words when you pull the trigger you are intent on firing the gun. BUT when you cock the hammer the trigger pull is extremely light so you might accidentally fire the revolver when you don't intend to.
sharkinfested 5 months ago
you want some power in your hands? i just bought a S&W 360 357 scando today... shooting 357 mag rounds through it is like letting an m-80 go off in your hand. haha It was really brutal. 38 rounds are the way to go in that CCW J-frame. i cant keep a tight group with the 357 rounds out of that 11 oz hand cannon. I shot about 40 rounds of 357 for the first time out of it...maybe i will get better with time with that gun. Its just one of those things where that mag round is not very practical. haha

Great little gun.
It's as accurate as any "Stubby" ever made.
Trigger pull is "2 men and a mule" but it serves as a safely.
Your 5 yr old WON'T pull this trigger.
You can't pull the trigger on a 642 by accident.
I can commonly shoot 3 in. groups at 25 ft. so it's as accurate as I am.
Beyond 25ft. I don't need a Self-Defense handgun I need a loud voice.
.38 Special 158 Gr +P Semi-Jacketed H.P will put plenty of of impact on any target that is within reasonable range.

What is the difference in the model 442 and the 642? I think they both have the J frame and look very similar.
MackAttack177 10 months ago
@MackAttack177 they are the same gun. One is blued and the other stainless (or a stainless looking polymer)
ressikanflute 10 months ago
@ressikanflute Nope no polymer on either of these guns. The only thing stainless on the 642 is the cylinder. The frame is aluminum alloy. The 442 is the same gun except the cylinder is carbon steel. The frame is aluminum alloy like the 642. The 642 is the flat silver color and the 442 is a matte black. I happen to have the 442 and love it. I chose the black because I thought it would be more concealable. Lots of fun to shoot.

How do you feel about the knockdown power of the .38 special? I hear all the time that it is less powerful than the 9mm but more than the .380
tubevideoguy762 7 months ago
Hickok , I think any firearm capable of striking a primer would be a lethal weapon in your hands! My new snubbie is a 642-2 and it has that blasted lawyer lock. Every time I pick it up In the back of my mind I think the lock is gonna somehow engage and render it useless. I have even thought of trading it in or disabling it. I paid a premium price and they added a feature that could cause it to fail. Other than the lock I really like the little thing! I like old Smiths better.

What's the purpose of that revolver having a short barrel, over a long barrel?

@dafranx - Concealed carry. It can easily fit in your pocket. The shorter a pistol is, the less it interferes with your movements such as sitting down.

dont kno much about revolvers but can someone tell me whats the point of making the hammer concealed also how does this gun compare to the taurus 85 ultralite
hulkbuster1026 1 year ago
@hulkbuster1026 An exposed hammer is one thing that could get hung up in clothing when trying to draw it from a pocket which is one of the most popular way of carrying a j frame. the small.38s like the 642 and the S &W 442 and Ruger LCR do not have that exposed hammer.
jimitl5 1 year ago
do you leave the brass on the ground or collect it? if left on the ground you must be walking on massive brass
nottinmatterz2day 1 year ago
Meant to state "the 38 special round has been dropping bad guys since the 1930s".
The S&W 642 has not been around since the 1930s but, the J frame has.
Invader1956 1 year ago
Cut to the chase...
If you are confused about getting a good gun to defend yourself with, search no more. Buy a J frame [Smith and Wesson 642] and rest assured, you have a really good, simple to operate, idiot proof handgun. It has been dropping bad guys since the 1930s.
Invader1956 1 year ago
You do a great job of explaining/demonstrating this gun. What a great standard carry.
Although I have a number of 1911s, I still carry a J frame also. A GREAT gun espically for women and people who are not proficient with racking slides and clearing malfunctions.
Invader1956 1 year ago
for everyone that keeps asking whats +p, just think of it as saying + power, + pressure or + powder because essentially its a bullet with more velocity

Whats "plus P" ? great video by the way.
Ballerfella2007 1 year ago
You said it's illegal to carry this with the hammer back. Is that because it's a revolver, or does that apply to, say, 1911s as well?

one more question
i like to hang out in imfdb and i was looking at the dark knight guns and the 64 smith and wesson picked my interest , whats the difference between the 64 and the 65 , and also which one is better ?
romas1995 1 year ago
Hello mr Hickock !
im a 16 year old boy, a student who loves to wright stories and little screenplays for movies , im writing a zombie like story and i want to find a proper revolver (small revolver) for a 15-16 year old kid.
of course a kid at that age cannot carry a 44 magnum , so i was looking for a 64 S&W , a colt magnum carry (but i was informed that they dont make these any more ) or a .38 but it takes 5 rounds and that does not help my story much.
so watch your opinion.
