I have a question. I've been growing an Avocado tree for about the last 3 and half months or so. It has a very long root and about a 1 inch stalk. My mom decided she did not want it sitting in water on shelf anymore and decided to plant it. I have heard you are supposed to wait until the stalk is at least 6 inches tall and has leaves before you put it in soil. What are the chances of my tree's survival?
planted mine directly into the soil to start - did shave off the ends of the pit, though. what i've got so far is a short, but very bushy tree. what up with that?
@ameliabedelia99 i'm not a big plant guru, but i think maybe you could have a small pot possibly, or that the plant got shocked somehow and stunted its growth growing upwards and expanded outwards more. last thing i can think of is maybe the type of avocado you're growing. I'm gonna have to look into this more since my seeds are sprouting.
@iSmokeLikeBobMarley Thanks for the response. It could very well be that it got shocked - it did get quite cool here - more cool than where avocados are traditionally grown. My plant is slowly growing upwards and ever more outwards. Hope yours do well.
@ameliabedelia99 As long as yours is still growing then it's a good sign. I actually don't plan on letting mine get bigger then 7ft. I live in chicago so will have to bring it in for the winter and let it be outside for the summer. If you go to the list of people i subscribed to, check out Growquest. The guy has a lot of great avocado videos. I guess he actually grows a lot of different plants so this guy definitely knows what he's doing. I think i will end up buying a tree from his site.
That plant needs to be placed in soil ASPA!! Never leave it like that in water....it will die. Once it starts sorouting roots and a little sprout....it can be placed directly in soil....it need nutirents to grow...water cannot provide that....
im 14 and have 5 of these growing ranging from 2 to 9 feet, i wouldn't recomend that window sill if it gets a lot of sun, uv rays hard on roots amplified by water
@WillSmithCleanRap no offense but your 14 and your growing an avocado farm?? slightly weird, maybe get out of the house a bit, maybe see some friends?
I see that you leave it in the water long enough for it to grow long/many roots. It also grew leafs... do you pinch off the top to get it to grow more leaf... i usually plant mine when they have a root about an inch long...but was never really sucessfull at it. They usually grow a long stem about a foot long and then dry out and die... do you use only water or do you put fertilizer in the water...
@cstmontreal I use only water. you can leave them in the water as long as you want. when they get to about a foot tall then they are strong enough to be planted.
@un300zx its not good to leave your tree in water when it has leafs you must put it in soil to absorb nutrients for the avocado that will farther along grow
if you do this the avocado meat will end up being white not green
i grew one from a seed in soil in new jersey and it was 1 ft tall with atleast 7 leaves by one month old.

How long did it take for the seed to crack on yours? Mine hasn't cracked yet and it's been well over two weeks ....

How did you get your avocado tree to produce so many branches and roots at such an early stage?

@wigglygiggly77 well i kinda don't believe that since if you look at his update the plant grew to be pretty healthy and nice.
