  • I get to do a peice like this!!! gahh how wierd haha

  • She's awesome.

  • My pupils at our Liverpool secondary school are discovering Martha Graham's Lamentation for the first time and are finding it utterly wonderful. The response from my group of 15 yr old boys and girls has been astounding. They are creating their own piece based on Martha Graham's work and I am having to learn the Kodaly piano music.

  • i love this dance so much. Martha Graham is such an amazing choreographer. One of the greatest pioneers of modern dance

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.............

  • thumbs up if Graham brought you here.

  • i keep coming back to watch this

  • i simply love this art

    thanks Google, for learning me.

Since that day i am in love with martha graham and her art.

  • The girl dancing is Peggy Lyman?

I thought that was Martha Graham... now I am a little confused!

  • It was just an animation

Martha was incredible! & this choreography prove it

  • its actually creepy...

  • Kodaly :D

  • I thought it was amazing.. Some of the forms she created struck me. Completely original and a (somber) delight to watch.

  • At least this one was better than the original...

  • martha graham is amazing, i had to do some research on her. she will never be forgotten in dance history. shes like the mother of dance. i think it said she choreographed over 180 dancers all by herself also. Today is her birthday.

  • this scary

  • this is gay

  • @SirVladHarkonen said "Sir Vlad"

  • there is a deeper meaning to this than what it looks like. I can actually relate to it

  • @Artemisthewolf01

    feel free to explain then

  • This is cool.

  • thumbs up if this gave u goosebumps

  • 63 no saben bailar, envidiosos

  • She was so vividly creative; this is art through dance. Brilliant.

  • this scared me.

  • Play this on a piano and any "cultured" person would tell you it is "beautiful" or "powerful", but play it on a guitar and it suddenly becomes the anthem of the antichrist.

  • google!!

  • This is what good diggles in Google can do ;)

  • sorry just not for me i dont feel it

  • important irrelevant fact: this is the "e" from the google animation :P

  • why does this remind me of childbirth....

  • i want on of those body socks to sit and watch tv in

  • Tremendous example of modern dance. So emotional, I could feel the dancer's sadness

  • Omg.. that was really boring..

  • i sorry but that wasnt danceing that waz scary also i didnt realy understand what ur soppous to get out of that

  • Wow. This was amazing. Didn't shy away from feeling at all, but accepted it and showed it to the deepest level. So painful to watch.

  • fuck this is creepy as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I honestly thought the last bit of the google animation about this women ahd to do with Earth Bending (Last air bender)

  • Watching this does make me absolutely sad and frustrated. This is what sadness 'looks' like.

  • This is why we need to add the arts back into school systems, so that children have access to all types of expression. Maybe the world would be a better place. Wonderful post Google!

  • this is not what google advertised

  • Art has no limits. This woman dancing at a supreme level makes you think that floats. Sometimes words can not describe the feeling that you can live. Very nice. And thank you for open our eyes google

  • im sorry but i didnt get this. To me, this just looked like a woman sitting on a bench in a blue super-stretchy suit twisting and turning around. Im sorry but that is my opinion on that. lol

  • @Paramorerocks4u I understand what you mean, but thing this has been made 80 years ago! Can you imagine how creative this was in the past? In order to apreciate art you must think on the year it was made

  • The movements look like they came straight from Avatar.

  • it's kinda sad to see how people in 1976 made fun of retards.

  • @yatudlabiereicit we'll refrain to make fun of you in 2011 then

  • GOOGLE brought me here!! this is AMAZING!!

  • Its all subjective on peoples' opinions, whether you like it or not. At the very base of dance, its simply poetry of the body. It can be arbitrary or it can be used to tell a story or express an idea. I think this, in my very humble opinion, is an excellent portrayal if its subject matter. She seems like a wonderful and expressive dancer... Now I'mma look up more YouTube videos of her an drank some FourLoko.

  • This is very surreal.

  • me gusto mucho mas la animacion de google

  • thumbs up if your watching this because of google

  • @tim0harmon Gotta love technology. I never heard of her before google. I love the fact that all of us who were curious enough to check it out can connect through youtube. :)

  • @tim0harmon 2 thumbs up if you can spell "you're"

  • @tim0harmon what the heck? 300+ people here just because of google in one day?

  • @Milomia9 holy shit i did not expect that many people to thumbs up it haha

  • @tim0harmon holy shit? you suck.

  • @jivimome haha. right

  • If I had to do this I would be lamenting too.

  • The point of a good interpretive dance isn't to see how many assinine "impressive" movements you can shove into like a 10 minute period; it's to express. Watch this dance again and think to yourself what this dance is expressing when it comes to conveying grief. If anyone has ever felt true, deep grief they'll understand how well this dance conveys that feeling.

  • I don't think it's a matter of 'getting' it or it being 'meaningful' to people that should influence your opinion if you feel the dance is good or not. I still fail to see why there is such a big deal over her, she was the first, does not mean she was the best, and if she had not someone else would have. I am highly 'bleh' about this dancer.

  • I'm very disappointed with people's reactions to this dance.... I mean, it IS Youtube, but REALLY now. People can be so absolutely shallow. Did anyone even try to THINK about the meaning of this dance? Dance doesn't have to be defined by gratuitous amounts of movement. And this is an amazing form of art, because she has looked at something very deep - grief - and she's brought it out in this routine. Besides, I'm sure she does plenty of other "real dancing" that might satisfy you silly purists.

  • BORING!!!!!!!!!

  • im going to have nightmares tonite

  • 3:08 que posicion mas chistoso pero bello

  • google ...

  • martha fucking -stinks-

  • este video representa la ultima letra del google

  • Comment removed

  • please .... alguien que le preste un par de tijeras para q pueda salir de esa cosa ..... me desespera verla asi ......

  • I lost 5min of my life!!!

Acabo de perder 5 min !!!

  • Conan was right, "the lementations of the women", is what is good in life.

  • I'm sorry, but this is the weirdest thing i think i've ever watched. But, i guess it's art to some?! I'm a hiphop dancer, so i'm use to a lot more movement and fast beats. lol

  • lolwut

  • Ok i get how this can relate to a person whos in grief , bcuz u feel trapped ... but i dnt understand how this is DANCING ?? she barely does anything , i mean its art in someway but its just not rly dancing , but thts only wat i think , mayb cuz i think tht dancing involves more movement ...

  • @zoe2354 Try this one on for size. It's on youtube. /watch?v=5fDkArsFaQo&NR=1

  • @WateverWatever04 thnx =) its nice actually, her work is nice & its rlly artistic

  • no offense but the animation on google was better ...

  • @davepb05 maybe because it was animation..........

  • @davepb05 Don't worry, I don't expect you to understand this. I don't get it either. From the clothes emphasizing shape and the music, I see a person alone on the bench simply lamenting.

  • that sounds funny... but it could true.

  • @davepb05

I agree... this is extra scaryyyyy.....

  • @davepb05 no kidding right?

  • @davepb05 ignorant....

  • That was friggin weird....

I only watched it because if Google notices something, I'd be damned if I didnt go check it out.

  • The dancing made me feel soemthing. I don't know really what it was, but it was something. This is amazing.

  • @BagelBagelB1 ehm.. this is dancing?!:O

  • @marnixkaashoek this is art xD

  • Ghost Pro

  • noob

  • For those of you that don't get it, the fabric is a metaphor for the trapped way you feel when in grief, when lamenting. This is phenominal work...

  • a aquellos que no lo entiendan se les puede bbuscar la traduccion, esta en cada uno que le guste o no, pero todo va en vena artistica y sensibilidad a la expresion... y la verdad para mi es hermoso tanto la historia como la presentacion...

  • what the hell

  • I rock in a costume back and forth... :3

  • yo si entendi y me parecio hermoso,la historia que cuenta es muy conmovedora.

  • sin duda algo poco visto para su epoca!! :O

esa musica da algo de miedo xD

  • That was fucking intense..

  • Seizure.

  • What the HELL did i just watch!?

  • es hermoso!!

  • no entendi nada jaja

  • AMAZING !!! :O

  • that was scary >_<

  • very intresting. Yeah most definitely

  • okay that was weird

  • it like a big blue uncircumcised dancing penis ..... yet i feel......

  • @eppicNESSSS your comment... made my wasted 5 minutes worthwhile.

  • талант!

  • дякую Google

  • Vou escrever em português. Isto é uma prova explícita em como uma simples dança pode retratar tão bem os sentimentos... Quem já passou por dor, tragédia e sentimento de perda reconhece-se nesta dança... Fenomenal...!

  • waste of my time-___-

  • Lady Gaga's supreme master

  • um... well, a very strange way of dancing, actually.

I don`t mind if someone likes it, but... it`s weird, really.

  • @TaffiHawthorn it depend on what you call dancing. for sb it would be SYTYCD bouncing around, for other one showing emotions with your body and unusual movement. yes, it is weird :) positive weird

  • So freaky gorgeous.

  • Could not sit down watching a person doing this, I suppose thats my opinion!

  • Advertisment for snuggie?

  • EL ARTE NO SE DEBE ENTENDER, SOLO SE DEBE SENTIR Y POR LO QUE VEO HAY POCOS QUE HAN DESARROLLADO LA CAPACIDAD DE SENTIR...

  • Yea I'm officially scared now.that bitch looks like penguin from batman.and I guess I just dont understand art.

  • @Ninesign HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @Ninesign Maybe some people who understand art may not even get this. I think most people who would be touched by this dance are those who have experienced the kind of grief that she's portraying. They watch it and go "That is EXACTLY how I felt when I went through [insert tragedy or loss]."

  • thumbs up if this video gave you chills

  • well i suppose dance is about diversity so not all of them can be the same,

  • yuck.

  • this video showed me that i don't uderstand art, thank you google

  • @marotoby Most people don't.

  • Osobiście nie rozumiem tej sztuki, ale dla wielu ludzi z pewnością jest to niezwykłe.

  • que magnificos movimientos que magnificas expresiones , me parece que trataba de escaparce de la santidad.

  • GOOGLE Jabni hna .

  • ok... I feel like playing silent hill now

  • my favorite bit is 4.03 to 4.10- amazing!

  • I <3 my stretchy blankie.

  • she did the e!

  • @ArianaDennis Based on ONE of her pieces?

  • @stefania511868917 Educate yourself. Look up Martha Graham on wikipedia and read the first line. Only performing lamentation did not make her famous. Her contributions to dance which were numerous and genre defining did. Get a clue.

  • thats sick

  • totally redid this for my modern dance class :) oh martha graham, Happy Birthday!

  • google brought me here

  • @TheSMcSMc ... you´re not alone dude XD ...

  • well..yeah...wtf

  • respect pour l'... "artiste", mais ce style chorégraphie, c'est vraiment de la daube pour décérébrés

  • @stefania511868917 yeah...but you didn't

  • @stefania511868917 well, we are waiting eagerly to see your video.

  • Mano arriba. SI GOOGLE TE TRAJO AQUÍ!!!

  • @Rickardon te has copiado ¬¬

  • I have to disagree with all the negative comments. My wife and i lost a son, I personally experience her struggle with her own grief and sadness, for long feelings difficult for her to escape from. Took her many years to be able to fight and get past the tragedy. I think Mrs. Graham performance reflect my dear wife struggle very well.

  • Genius! The effortless movement of the well-trained dancer is very precise! Only pathetic mediocres think they can do this easily.. tsk..tsk..tsk...

  • @lilmissshimmy I bet you are very good at dancing, for I know a lot of good musicians who like saying mediocre, ignorant folk are pathetic...next time you are practicing hard and worrying about how you will get better, I assure you that elusive step from "advanced" to "master" is not technique, but the ability to throw away any petty thoughts NOT directly involved in your art, and the top of that list is negativity toward others. I'm sure Martha Graham had no time or energy to put down others.

  • This touched me when I thought it wouldn't. This video brought back memories, albeit recent memories, of when my grandfather past away. I interpret this dance as the externalization of the inner-turmoil being felt within someone mourning a painful experience, but to remember my mother sitting on the floor next to her bed crying and throwing her head back in sadness, I could make the connection easily. Kudos for a great performance.

  • @ArianaDennis actually that isn't meant to appear all from the same performance, hence the change of attire between each dance sequence "snippet" in the animation.

  • I found it interesting.. but no clue to what it can mean if I had seen it without the introduction. And if one can't understand the meaning without a 'translation" , then what's the point? it just raised so many questions. But still interesting.

  • @nadirslh60 The thing with alot of art is that. If you find yourself asking yourself more questions than getting direct answers. Then she was successful. if you're given a title and a motion, and you sit there and decode it. then th at has given you something to aspire towards, something to try and understand without a direct meaning. something you can call your own. am i making any sensE? lol its hard to explain.

  • Happy Birthday Martha, ty for your contribute to art :)

  • This struck something deep in me! I generally appreciate dance, but I was totally transfixed by this. She channels emotion so unobstructed. The proportions in her body positioning, all the details down to her toes curling, this is fucking great art. The whole thing is so honest it seems improvised. And by the way, I am a metal head who rides sportbikes and smokes weed, so cheers to art being able to move hearts from all walks of life.

  • Yeah google brought me here!thanks google!i love this!

  • Thumbs up if Google brought you here

  • @MegaMjfreak that 's true hh^^

  • It's fine if people don't really get it (I needed her explanation too in order to get the grasp of this) but it's sad that there will be those who have to insult and disrespect something they don't understand.

  • You give me hope for the future. :)

  • This is dance history, and she is dance history, hence her being featured on google! She is argued to be the founder of modern dance, we wouldn't be where we are today in terms of dance with out her, our main style would only be Ballet! She is what Brecht did to acting! If you do not like... don't watch, as you clearly don't understand the art. haha! Rant over!

  • LAME[ntation]

  • ela divia fumar muita maconha!

  • i dont get this dance

  • Wow!! Created in 1930 and filmed in 1976..

  • if you don't appreciate it, of course you'll find it crappy. goes the same for food too.

  • music and dancing are crap

  • i think it should be called "Suffocation"

  • I knew Martha Graham before it was cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, yeah. Only because of our art classes though. Even though I'm not all that much into dancing, I thought this was very.. lovely. So simple, yet so complicated and full of emotion. It shows that sometimes you need to look past the technical and see the emotion and conceptual thinking behind it, that not only the superficial matters.
