The response from my group of 15 yr old boys and girls has been astounding. They are creating their own piece based on Martha Graham's work and I am having to learn the Kodaly piano music.

martha graham is amazing, i had to do some research on her. she will never be forgotten in dance history. shes like the mother of dance. i think it said she choreographed over 180 dancers all by herself also. Today is her birthday.
Play this on a piano and any "cultured" person would tell you it is "beautiful" or "powerful", but play it on a guitar and it suddenly becomes the anthem of the antichrist.
This is why we need to add the arts back into school systems, so that children have access to all types of expression. Maybe the world would be a better place. Wonderful post Google!
Art has no limits. This woman dancing at a supreme level makes you think that floats. Sometimes words can not describe the feeling that you can live. Very nice. And thank you for open our eyes google

Its all subjective on peoples' opinions, whether you like it or not. At the very base of dance, its simply poetry of the body. It can be arbitrary or it can be used to tell a story or express an idea. I think this, in my very humble opinion, is an excellent portrayal if its subject matter. She seems like a wonderful and expressive dancer... Now I'mma look up more YouTube videos of her an drank some FourLoko.
@tim0harmon Gotta love technology. I never heard of her before google. I love the fact that all of us who were curious enough to check it out can connect through youtube. :)
The point of a good interpretive dance isn't to see how many assinine "impressive" movements you can shove into like a 10 minute period; it's to express. Watch this dance again and think to yourself what this dance is expressing when it comes to conveying grief. If anyone has ever felt true, deep grief they'll understand how well this dance conveys that feeling.
I don't think it's a matter of 'getting' it or it being 'meaningful' to people that should influence your opinion if you feel the dance is good or not. I still fail to see why there is such a big deal over her, she was the first, does not mean she was the best, and if she had not someone else would have. I am highly 'bleh' about this dancer.
I'm very disappointed with people's reactions to this dance.... I mean, it IS Youtube, but REALLY now. People can be so absolutely shallow. Did anyone even try to THINK about the meaning of this dance? Dance doesn't have to be defined by gratuitous amounts of movement. And this is an amazing form of art, because she has looked at something very deep - grief - and she's brought it out in this routine. Besides, I'm sure she does plenty of other "real dancing" that might satisfy you silly purists.
I'm sorry, but this is the weirdest thing i think i've ever watched. But, i guess it's art to some?! I'm a hiphop dancer, so i'm use to a lot more movement and fast beats. lol
Ok i get how this can relate to a person whos in grief , bcuz u feel trapped ... but i dnt understand how this is DANCING ?? she barely does anything , i mean its art in someway but its just not rly dancing , but thts only wat i think , mayb cuz i think tht dancing involves more movement ...
@davepb05 Don't worry, I don't expect you to understand this. I don't get it either. From the clothes emphasizing shape and the music, I see a person alone on the bench simply lamenting.
a aquellos que no lo entiendan se les puede bbuscar la traduccion, esta en cada uno que le guste o no, pero todo va en vena artistica y sensibilidad a la expresion... y la verdad para mi es hermoso tanto la historia como la presentacion...

@Ninesign Maybe some people who understand art may not even get this. I think most people who would be touched by this dance are those who have experienced the kind of grief that she's portraying. They watch it and go "That is EXACTLY how I felt when I went through [insert tragedy or loss]."
@stefania511868917 Educate yourself. Look up Martha Graham on wikipedia and read the first line. Only performing lamentation did not make her famous. Her contributions to dance which were numerous and genre defining did. Get a clue.
I have to disagree with all the negative comments. My wife and i lost a son, I personally experience her struggle with her own grief and sadness, for long feelings difficult for her to escape from. Took her many years to be able to fight and get past the tragedy. I think Mrs. Graham performance reflect my dear wife struggle very well.
@lilmissshimmy I bet you are very good at dancing, for I know a lot of good musicians who like saying mediocre, ignorant folk are pathetic...next time you are practicing hard and worrying about how you will get better, I assure you that elusive step from "advanced" to "master" is not technique, but the ability to throw away any petty thoughts NOT directly involved in your art, and the top of that list is negativity toward others. I'm sure Martha Graham had no time or energy to put down others.
This touched me when I thought it wouldn't. This video brought back memories, albeit recent memories, of when my grandfather past away. I interpret this dance as the externalization of the inner-turmoil being felt within someone mourning a painful experience, but to remember my mother sitting on the floor next to her bed crying and throwing her head back in sadness, I could make the connection easily. Kudos for a great performance.
@ArianaDennis actually that isn't meant to appear all from the same performance, hence the change of attire between each dance sequence "snippet" in the animation.
I found it interesting.. but no clue to what it can mean if I had seen it without the introduction. And if one can't understand the meaning without a 'translation" , then what's the point? it just raised so many questions. But still interesting.
@nadirslh60 The thing with alot of art is that. If you find yourself asking yourself more questions than getting direct answers. Then she was successful. if you're given a title and a motion, and you sit there and decode it. then th at has given you something to aspire towards, something to try and understand without a direct meaning. something you can call your own. am i making any sensE? lol its hard to explain.
This struck something deep in me! I generally appreciate dance, but I was totally transfixed by this. She channels emotion so unobstructed. The proportions in her body positioning, all the details down to her toes curling, this is fucking great art. The whole thing is so honest it seems improvised. And by the way, I am a metal head who rides sportbikes and smokes weed, so cheers to art being able to move hearts from all walks of life.
It's fine if people don't really get it (I needed her explanation too in order to get the grasp of this) but it's sad that there will be those who have to insult and disrespect something they don't understand.
This is dance history, and she is dance history, hence her being featured on google! She is argued to be the founder of modern dance, we wouldn't be where we are today in terms of dance with out her, our main style would only be Ballet! She is what Brecht did to acting! If you do not like... don't watch, as you clearly don't understand the art. haha! Rant over!
I knew Martha Graham before it was cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, yeah. Only because of our art classes though. Even though I'm not all that much into dancing, I thought this was very.. lovely. So simple, yet so complicated and full of emotion. It shows that sometimes you need to look past the technical and see the emotion and conceptual thinking behind it, that not only the superficial matters.
I get to do a peice like this!!! gahh how wierd haha
