Well I haven't used that player before, but you need to send the program changes to each part. Try to download the zipfile again (EOX dot NO slash CM32L dot ZIP), I've updated the song with program changes in each track. This should work :)
Not all those games supported the MT-32, but that was truly fantastic. Nice to see classics (not to mention the MT-32 itself!) get the attention they deserve.
I've got a dedicated retro DOS machine with two Rolands (MT-32 and SC-55) and two Yamahas (TG-100 and DB50XG) along with two soundcards (GUS PnP and SB AWE32). Game music was really different before the advent of CD audio. Unfortunately only a select few gamers had the cash to be able to enjoy midi at its fullest.
Is it possible to get the original MIDI for download? I'd love to play it on my MT-32 :)
True that! Modern CD/Audio has it advantages, but the fun was all MIDI ;)
I have exported the MIDIfile here. Just add the necessary . and /. eox no CM32L.zip
It contains one parallell and one serial SMF file. Not sure if the program changes were included, but I trust anyone who wanna play it, also have a sequencer where you can add the proper program changes. See the info under my video :)
Great song! You use the MT-32 default patches perfect (many others fail). Would have been perfect for every Legends game in the old days like "Eric the Unready" or "Spellcasting 301" (they used default patches too). Would love to hear what you can do with the stunning Sierra sounds for example...
And great Clip! Only missing the hot Space Quest IV blonde ;)
Thanks mate :) I started out with some tunes after this one, using some Sierra sounds, but I haven't had time to finish them. I put one of them up, unfinished of course and just raw recorded from the module on my "secret page". Go to w3 eox no slash secret h t m l (bit cryptic, but YouTube prevents links in comments so put in dots and slash where needed. You'll find the song "MT32-Song beta (still WIP, finished later perhaps)" under the video almost at the bottom. For now :)
Depends on the purpose. It has better and more realistic sounds than the CM-32L, but less flexibility when it comes to programming. When the SC-7 was released everybody was craving more realistic sounds which is reflected in the growing support of GM/GS modules in games at the time, but it does sound very MIDI compared to what you get nowadays. I'd say the CM-32L is better because of it's flexibility and that it is more a synth module and can convey more colorful sounds :)
I've got to say, this is probably the best track for the MT32/CM32L I have ever heard. Absolutely stunning work, especially the DoctorSolo solo at 2:40
Thanks mate. Glad to hear that :) Right now I'm a bit busy with finding a new place to stay, but when I get settled, I'll probably get some more songs done. Have started fiddling with using some of the Sierra SysEx sounds etc.
In the meantime you can check out some of the revamped Sierra songs I've started on here add the proper w's and . : eox no/secret html :)
Great work! Excellent composition and the sounds and patches are amazing!
Do you by any chance have an idea of how I can extract midi files from old DOS games? I play the guitar and would really like to be able to open these midi files in programs like cubase and guitar pro, so that I can re-record them and post some videos for the "old games enthusiasts"
It depends...do you have any physical outboard gear like PCs with MIDI-interfaces so that you can hook them up directly? That's what I'm doing. I have my 486's MPU-IPC-T interface connected to one of the MIDI inputs on my Mac and just did a realtime recording of whatever I make the 486 outputs. Of course this has it's drawback - you never have any proper timing so you have to re-align the data afterwards which can be tedious. (cont.)
which describes how to do it with less gear. I thought maybe Dosbox would have a function for saving MIDI data, but it turns out it's just for still frames, video and sound...
Probably the world's BEST demo track using MT32/CM32L patches. The part starting at 1:28 sounds very nice and the square lead solo starting at 2:40 is fantastic. I'm trying hard to remember which famous song also used that series of chords between 1:34 and 1:38. Can anybody help?
Thanks, glad to hear you like it :) Most of my inspiration comes mostly from Sierra/Lucasarts composers, Jarre/Vangelis/Serra/Oldfield etc and basically everything else with vivid colorful harmonies and good grooves (from country to hard heavy/metal/rock).
The chord-section you refer to are "Cm - Bb6 - Cm7 - Fm7" basically. I may have been subconsciously influenced by some parts from Willy Beamish (at least the solopart at 2:40) ;)
great song!

I absolutely *adore* this track. Excellent use of the MT32/CM32 - it suits the period perfectly.
The 'raw' MIDI doesn't sound too bad played back on a MT32 either! Thank you for sharing!

What is your opinion about Roland SC-7 (better or worse)?
