  • Hi, this is Richie's partner. Presently Richie is a vocal coach at the University of Huddersfield. Before that, he was the visiting vocal tutor for Popular music at Leeds University.

Don's surname is actually spelt HAYWOODE. Hope that clears up the confusion for those who were unsure about his surname.

    Take care everyone.

  • one of my all time favourite songs

  • You have to wear something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue on your wedding day for good luck! (or so it is said) :-)

  • My Dad used to sing this all the time lol

  • Great old song!

  • Youth Club UK Pop-Soul, ala Geno Washington's "My Little Chickadee". Fond memories though.

Their best Soul sides were probably with MGM, particularly "I'm Gonna Change" (as the Velours) and "Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music" b/w the Willie Hutch song "Who Could Be Loving You" - though the "Theme from Exodus" (Deram) was also popular in the UK at one time! Ritchie Pitts later had some solo success with "Every Couple's Not A Pair" on Contempo.

  • Are you still out there Jeanette? You were mine between 1971 & 1974 before I became a stupid, selfish, unfaithful idiot. I still miss you like crazy and think about you most every day, especially your birthday on 19th March and our anniversary on 11th April. XXX

  • Right then - let me set the record str8. The Fantastics (actually just "Fantastics") was a U.S 4 piece group originally called the Velours. They released Something Old Something New back in 1971. The band members were Jerome "Romeo" Ramos, John Cheetom, Donald Heywood and Richard Pitts. The group you are all referring to in previous posts is 4 blokes doing karaoke......poorly ! I take that back - the one with a decent voice - vince fontayne (I ask you) is quality - he must be about 20 yrs old!

  • Hi Scott, just a few amendments. The group was called 'The Fantastics' and consisted of John Cheatdom, Donald Heywoode, Richard(Richie)Pitts and Jerome(Romie)Ramos. They are all well although doing different things. Romie is back in New York (I still speak to him occasionally), Don and John still work together I believe (there was some talk of the group reforming but I don't know for sure)and Richie lives in Yorkshire. I know this because I was married to Richie for 29 yrs & we have 3 kids.

  • Hiya beauti - I bow down to your superior knowledge, thanks for the info, appreciate it. What I was trying to get across was to let people know that they weren't in fact seeing the Fantastics (by the way, I just went on what they were listed as in the guiness book of british hit singles "fantastics") as they were, but a completely different 4 piece who (in my opinion) are a poor karaoke act, with the exception of vince fontayne (Kai Taylor - as I have since found out). Is UR Richie involved ?

  • Hi Scott

I thought that as a fan of The Fantastics you'd be interested to know that two of the original group are here on YouTube performing 'I'm Gonna Change' under their US name, The Velours. I saw the video just below this one. Donald is the tall, darker guy to the right of John, who is the shorter of the three. So a bit of a treat for the fans of The Fantastics known in the USA, before coming to the UK, as The Velours.

  • Great info. - from the horses mouth as it were! But which one of them is actually singing lead here? By the way, this was the first record l ever bought in 1971. Still think of it as great. Got married in November last year, of course l had to play this on my wedding day. Let the guys know that their recordings are still very much appreciated!

  • Hi Sandy

It's Donald singing lead on this song. It was very appropriate for your wedding, congratulations. I'll pass on your message and say thanks on their behalf because I'm certain they would appreciate knowing they still have loyal fans.

    L. (Beaut)

  • I was one of the musicians they used while they were based over here. When I was in the band, it was Don, his Daughter Emma, and Elvin Hayes. Best time of my life.

  • Just found out that they are appearing at the cocked hat in scunthorpe, north lincolnshire on the 16th may 08

  • hiya steve yes this group is still alive and kicking mate.. im from rotherham and have seen them a few times there round the wmc now...

  • Seen them a few times. Brilliant.Hope they are still going strong.any info?.

  • Many years ago back in 1980 i went along to a very small venue in barnsley (Antonios) to see this group they were doing the club and night spots at that time! Does anybody know if they are still around or have they just retired - Thanks for posting!

  • i use to work at antonios as bar manager i have posted some videos of the fantastics as they are now any info just ask

  • I played bass in this band. That's not me on the single though.

  • Song written by Roger Cook-Roger Greenaway-Tony Macaulay. The Fantastics had also another good song penned by the same authors: "Sad Eyed Romany Woman."
