Society does like to watch " darker " shows, but that's just because an average person doesn't see someone else being disemboweled everyday in normal life. However, watching shows like the west wing does not show you how to become president. My Main Question is, Why the hell would Dexter be Black? Not only would that not fit into the show, but also would be statistically WRONG. Since 1950 there have been around 400 serial killers only 50 have been African American. That's about 8%.
Let me answer to you. Dexter is a successful show because first of all, the plot is great. The actors fit their roles. Also, watching the life of a serial killer is pretty interesting. Watching how his mind works. It really is a great show. If you had watched the show you wouldn't have any dumb questions. And this "what if his was african american?" bullshit is pretty stupid.

Yes...I have heard of Dexter, just like you my man I also did my research before watching...but then I ACTUALLY WATCHED THE SHOW!!! Serial killer killing bad guys.... and trying to maintain a family persona after the first season or 2 is borderline neutral...or is he? The show gets the viewer into the mind of "Dexter Morgan", in a way that the foreshadowing is already known to us, but not all the other characters. What makes the show so interesting, is that they don't pretend that what Dexter does is right. But that it still is about humanity. About Dexter trying to understand humanity, about his struggle to adapt to the world around him. It's about what being human really means.

Americans have and always will be curious about the dark underbelly of society because it is the part that many of us don't see. Good questions about us watching the dark underbelly of our society. I have often examined this question myself. What attracts me to these shows? I believe there may be a couple of answers: 1) Such shows provide catharsis for our inner "dark side;" 2) Such shows are often very well-written, produced and acted [Dexter, X-Files, &c.].

What makes the show so interesting, is that they don't pretend that what Dexter does is right. But that it still is about humanity. About Dexter trying to understand humanity, about his struggle to adapt to the world around him. It's about what being human really means.
