@tpstrat14 All you people do is say how much better duckpins is than tenpins. If so, then why do so many colleges have teams and why is tenpin bowling a varsity sport in 18 different states. How is duckpins so much better when the only thing you ever say about it is how much harder than tenpins it is. On a side note, have you considered that there are more factors in tenpins and that maybe it takes more skill to throw a 15 lbs ball(with consistent turn and speed) than chucking a 3 lbs ball.
Tenpin bowling is more famous also. You can't say that duckpin requires more skill. You get THREE chances to get a spare! And just like chunky532 said, you have to adjust your rev rate and ball speed to suit the oil pattern. With duckpin, you just throw it as hard as you can...no skill required.
2 things. the first is that ur not going to expand any sport by insulting other sports like tenpin. If every baseball player did that then nobody would want to play it. same in any other sport. second is that im a tenpin bowler and was insulted by this video. I work hard in my sport and it is extremely challenging!
I've bowled every type of game known. Ducks, 10's, Candles and 5-pin. They're all equally fun and equally challenging. I get insulted when a 10 pin bowlers tells me that because I bowl on a Duckpin league it doesn't count as "real" bowling. Each game requires skills, but each game requires a different set of skills. I carry a 134 average in Ducks and a 209 average in 10's.
To say that duckpins takes more skill than 10 pins is absolute nonsense. You have no lane conditions to deal with. As long as you can bomb a 3 lbs ball at the pins, you can do it.
if it's that easy, why has a perfect game still never been thrown? And why is it standard for professional 10pin bowlers to have their averages drop 100 points when bowling ducks?
Don't be silly, it's not bacci ball. Lofting the ball isnt allowed, and is generally only done by beginners. In fact, there's more lane condition to deal with, as the ball is smaller and the lanes are the same size.
it's funny how people seem to get personally offended hearing their sport isn't the most challenging.
Same thing with Candlepin Bowling. It takes lots of skill and accuracy. My grandfather was a great duckpin bowler when there were duckpin bowling centers in his area. I found Candlepin and Duckpin bowling very similar. to me it's 3 balls, ten pins knocked the down!!! The only difference is the Duckpin game: No deadwood pins on the deck after a ball is ROLLED.
@sjaffe saying that duckpin is harder than tenpin is like saying that baseball is harder than basketball. they ar two totally diferent sports each requiring completly diferent skill sets. in duckpin you just chunk the ball at the pocket. in tenpin you have to arc the ball at the pocket, meaning you have to get the location, speed, rev rate, and loft consistent and adjust with the oil. u dont have to do this in duckpin.
@chunky532 you say it's like comparing apples to oranges but then you do exactly that. I'm sorry if your feelings have gotten hurt because of your deep love for ten-pin, but the facts remain the same... a perfect game has never been rolled in duckpins. If it was as easy as just "chucking a ball as hard as you can" then everyone would be an expert, and the sport would be dominated by power players. I think you're confusing duckpins with rubber-ducks. Your comment makes no sense at all. Thx.
@chunky532 10 pin is a game of technology and therefore it really is a lesser game. You see pros bringing 18 different bowling balls with them so they can choose which ball to use based on the oil on the lanes that day. It reminds me of little league when the poor kids couldn't hit as well because, well, they didn't have $250 to spend on a bat.... duckpin ain't like that. It's a better, more pure sport...
You must be kidding me. I bowled in leagues for 30 years, with a high average of 217 ... and it's obvious to me that duckpins is harder.
150 average bowlers of 30 years ago are carrying 200, now, thanks to equipment and easy conditions. And they won't come back to a house unless it's high scoring.
You think today's avid bowlers would put up with a game where they can't rev a ball out to the gutter with 10 boards area and carry everything in sight? LOL Give me a break ... no comparison.
@flydude1063 Yea, as long as you can BOMB a 3.5 lb ball at the pins WITH perfect accuracy, you can do it. Yea, try it out before you say it's easy. My average in 10 pin is 156 and my average in duckpin is 115. (mind you, I'm a much more confident duckpin bowler than 10 pin) It's tough shit, man...
Insulted? You shouldn't be. Both games are difficult, and I have enjoyed both for many years -- and worked in the 10-pin business for a while. But I do believe that duckpin bowling is MUCH more difficult -- as well as being MUCH more fun. It is so hard, and so exasperating, that it actually makes it even more fun, because you'll see the most amazing "leaves" you ever thought possible. Long live duckpin bowling!
@ramrod250 Last week I just saw someone pick up a 7-8-9-10 split. The whole back row, pins bouncin around, eventually ending in a miraculous spare.... The physics of duckpin bowling is just plain fun to watch... 10 pin on the other hand is brutish and just plain boring....
i have been bowling ducks for 16 years and love it still. i live in duck country and places are always getting shut down. so i have to travel more and more every few years. but i still love it. it is much much harder than 10 pin
Even tho they're NOT sanctioned by the governing body they're 3 here in Massachusetts. In Billerica, N. Chemlsford and 1 other place that slips my mind at the moment.
Duckpin is the best. It totally beats out 10 pin. Anyone who says they think it is stupid or don't like it either have not played it or prefer to do things that are easy. I like the challenge and can't wait to get back to duckpin country.
My neme is Chris from Ohio. Im a former PBA member and have 2 300's , 2 299's and an 800 series to my bowling history. I have given all this up because I like the duckpin game better. I travel to Maryland just to bowl. Been doing this for years. Let me say that this game TAKES MORE SKILL than 10 pins will ever have. These hook-in-the box 10 pinners wouldnt last 1 game in ducks. Throwing a 5" ball at a 12" a part pins is much harder than a 27" ball going at 12" a part pins.
I love duck bowling I played as a child but now that I'm grown there's nowhere to play ,I would love to bring this unique sport to my hometown batesburg, S.C.
I grew up learing how to 10pin bowl. when I was much younger, tv used to show duckpin and candle bowling. My dad used to tell me how much fun it is. I always wanted to try it. Not many people in NC remember or ever heard of it. Videos about duckpin bowling doesn't Offend me. Personally, I would love to give it try. If any one knows where a center is please let me know. Grow up and learn something. Not one of you can honestly say your a good bowler untill you try duckpin.
Forget the score... you know how many of those 25,000 people scored a 300 on a PBA Tour regulation pattern...? My guess is not a whole lot. I respect the sport don't get me wrong, I respect every sport. Drop the score though... scores never show how good a person is... it's just numbers.
i am a ten pin bowler. i was insulted by this video when they talked about how duckpin requires so much more skill than ten pin. i practice every single day so that i can get to where i want to get in bowling. so this video was pretty insulting to me.
are you saying that duckpin bowlers don't work hard to get to the "perfect game level" ? It's simply a harder game, pick up a ball, and see what you score in duckpins.
Take 25,000 of those players and put them on the PBA Tour Regulation Patterns. Then see how many shoot a 300 game. Not saying duckpin doesn't require more or less skill but both. I know for sure that it does take skill whether you are throwing a bowling ball or a basket ball or a football. Whatever the sport, players who are amazing and talented have definitely worked hard to where they are today. Wish bowling received more recognition by the public. The players deserve it.
Ditto candlepins. There has NEVER been a perfect game scored in candlepins -- the highest 'high single' is 255. That, to me, qualfies as MUCH HARDER than tenpin, with its all-too-common "perfect scores".
i am a 10 pin bowler. i was insulted by this video when they said that you need a lot more skill to bowl duckpin. i bowl 7 day a week and work my butt off so that i can get to where i want to get in bowling.
And you should be insulted. I think the proper way of putting this is that it requires more skill to bowl a perfect duckpin game. Those dedicated to the duckpin game work as hard as you in perfecting their game. I also think that a point to be made is that it is more difficult to convert spares in ducks considering the kinds of breaks we get (you will NEVER rip the 1-5 in tens).
I think they should bring the show back ! I remember duckpin shows from WMAL (now WJLA) Channel 7 Washington DC back in the late 60s/early 70s. In fact, the show was shot at the TV studio on their own Shermans. It was good stuff then and would be good stuff now.
Do you have any idea how to get old footage of a telvision show called Pinbusters ? I think it was on wbal... I still have my two week trophey when I was on it... thanks
