C.S. Lewis may have been many things, but not an idiot. I've read everything he wrote and feel I understand his mind. He was a careful thinker, not one to accept things because someone else said or wrote about them. He basically said that Jesus was either who he said he was, the spotless Son of God, or he was an idiot. There can't be any neutral ground on that subject. Either accept Jesus or reject him, but don't say he was a good teacher and act as if he is optional. mg
With few exceptions (such as Robert M. Price), virtually all scholars in the fields history agree that Jesus was a Jewish teacher from Galilee who was regarded as a healer, was baptized by John the Baptist, was accused of sedition against the Roman Empire, and on the orders of Roman Governor Pontius Pilate was sentenced to death by crucifixion. So the only question really, is, was the man Jesus a liar.
Dawkins may seem eloquent but he purposely misrepresents Christianity. He makes himself look completely ignorant of the most basic tenets of Christianity. If he were interested in having a real debate he would meet Christianity on a level playing field. Instead he gives half truths and misrepresents what Christians believe.
By the way, where is the video this is a response to? I can't find it anywhere.
C.S. L.E.W.I.S. = "Consummate Skeptic Learned Erstwhile Worldview Impugned Science" Yes, he learned that his skeptism wasn't so scientific after all. The universe and all of its exquisite beauty and complexity requires a Creator.....
There's something rather than nothing at all. No more proof needed. Much, much more is offered, though; not proof, but experience. God likes to show up and show off. He likes to be admired. That's what's called worship. Either He chooses you, or you could look into the "faith" requirements to qualify. (Avoid Institutional Christianity.)
Yours is the proper tone. If athiests such as yourself and theists such as I wish I were could be at the table more often, we could get somewhere. Some social critic says we're a nation where everyone holds everyone in contempt. Glad to see you doing better.
It is fact most of the scriptures that make the bible are bits and pieces, and have been re-written so many times the word have no meaning, King James is a prime example. He was a known liar and he set out guidelines for the translation process, such as prohibiting footnotes and ensuring the position of the Church of England was recognized on various points. Thats right your book was re-written by a man who made up a fake religion, how far away would you rank your religion?
I strongly disagree with this way of thinking. Based on what we know about how the King James Bible was put together. King James gathered over 50 scholars seperated in 3 Universities to examine the Greek and Hebrew transcripts and translate it into that version. he allowed no foot notes so that no one mans opinion of the Bible be impeded in the scripture itself. But it would be translated as close as possible to how it reads out of the Hebrew and Greek.
I'm a Christian and I've listened to Richard Dawkins and what I heard in him was just harsh attack s against religion. He has said it himself that he wants to end religion. Still, he is very hateful, very spiteful, very vitriolic, just very means spirited. And, the whole ending of religion thing, it will still be here after he's gone so I don't worry about that at all.
He's a very militant atheist who is dogging me out for subscribing to a particular faith to get me to accept a more atheistic view of religion. Now, that may work for some, but it wouldn't work on me. Why would I want to have some one pretty much chastising me for believing in God? Anyway, some will buy into what he's saying...
You should be dogged out, pick up a dam book moron, we have proven all of the following, One, Jesus was a myth, two Nazareth was created 14 years after Jesus was supposed to be from there, three the earth is Millions of years old, not thousands, four, your religion was made by people who could not have had a grasp of how the world works, so made up this to explain it.
I'm a moron for not reading dam books? Well, I'll stop by the library tomorrow and get one. Sorry. Anyway, the gospel is said to have been written 30-65 years after Jesus ascended. The stories came from eyewitnesses as well as oral tradition. And, I believe that there were many who, when telling their tales of Jesus, who witnessed His miracles, His sermons. were healed by Him themselves, became followers of the way because of Him, etc., so to me, they are believable.
And, whether the Earth is 6 thousand years old or million of years old, that doesn't really matter to me cuz I'm here on it now. Lastly, being that you are not a follower of Christ and do not believe in the bible, you have no way of knowing why Christianity came to be. And, head knowledge still won't allow a person to learn of why Christianity is here or why the bible was written. And, no, you can't learn it that in bible class, t has to be reveled to you by the Holy Spirit.
But, because you won't allow the Holy Spirit to give you that revelation, you'll never know. Sad. Oh yeah, there is no proof that Jesus never existed. Furthermore, the gospels record Him being a Nazarene and those accounts came from those who knew Him, saw Him or heard of Him. They'd know best that Nazareth was a real place. So, I'm gonna take their word for it. Tootaloo:)
Yes, do enlighten me to these "Nazarenes" That said they saw Jesus. The holy spirit? Are you really telling me you believe in "ghosts"? Surely you can clearly see why I believe you and your kind delusional? Do you talk to god too? You do know we lock people up for talking to themselves. I will say this loud and proudly, There is no god, and Maybe when you people begin to believe in yourselves, you would not need a religious crutch.
Many who? Handed down word of mouth? And this is gospel to you? So when I tell my buddy I drank two beers and went home and by the time the "story" gets back to me it's twenty beers and I killed someone, that kind of "word of mouth"? First off the bible was written by Jews, they had no knowledge off nor want of a "jesus". Next lets explore the the Greeks, Romans and many others had a history of burning temples and libraries to remove the culture from the oppressed people.
Many have come to expect the worst from conservative, evangelical Christian organizations in America — and rarely do they disappoint. One in particular is the Southern Baptist Convention, the administrative body for many Southern Baptist churches in America. It has become clear that the leadership is determined to send out society back decades when it comes to matters like civil rights and women's independence.
I have a seminary degree from a Southern Baptist College and have been a pastor for some years. Please explain to me how The SBC "has determined send out society back decades" I am very intereste
Well lets see so many to chose from, I'll start with you being sexist, Baptist Faith and Message now explicitly defines the pastoral office as the exclusive domain of men — thus prohibiting female pastors.
First it isnt the SBC that states that a Pastor is to be a Male it is the apostle Paul. Women are to submit to her husbands lead as he submits to her needs it is a mutual submission. Marrige is clearly defined by the new testament by Jesus and Paul Matthew 6 and Matthew 19
Umm, No it's SBC 2000 BF&M policy. While the bible is sexist, it doesn't mean you have to adhere to it, like Gods word, seeing as we have proven it is not. Stop acting like you are bound to ignorance and lore as it's gods word, if you believe your god is a sexist, then who could anyone take you seriously? Quoting scripture to support your sexism and latent homophobia, is low even for a Pastor.
i believe that Christ was the perfect balance of animus and animae? perfect balance of male/female qualities, even as a man, He was humble, and associated with all sexes equally
Additionally, the 2000 BF&M now defines the family in an explicitly patriarchal way, with a wife expected to be "graciously" submissive to her husband.
There by pretty much taking away womens rights as we know it. setting us all back several decades to when women were little more than house keepers taking care of the children. I warn to to use strong cation with your denial of these allegations not only was I a member, I am married to a woman who wanted to be a pastor.
The most radical of the religious right can be found in movements like Christian Identity, one of the most dangerous theological doctrines in America today.
It is made all the more dangerous by the fact that so few people even realize that it exists, much less what exactly it represents. Christian Identity is a dominant theology of many active right-wing Christians, including many if not most Ku Klux Klan groups.
Members range from self-righteous moral warriors like Pat Robertson and Don Wildmon to less overtly religious organization like the Heritage Foundation to even white supremacist groups and militias like the Ku Klux Klan. What links them are their ideas on who should hold power and how that power should be exercised.
Look at the video of people being preached to on the train, the majority of dictators and "Millitant" countries are religious. The burden of proof is not on atheists to disprove god, it's on Christians to prove it, we can't arrest people and say "You have to prove your not guilty, we do not have to proove you are."
I'm kind of "paying it forward" when it comes to proving religion to be bullshit. Like the way I was 7 months ago, some of the people that come to YouTube are agnostics or barely Christians. Those people are the ones that I think this atheist community here can help. It's not about proving that there is no god, but about making a case against the idea of god or religion. Good cases have been made here without any definitive proof that god does not exist.
This idiot is bitching about how angry Atheist are? They fucking should be, the categorical dumbing down of all races with religion is causing a drag on society as a whole. You collective morons are stifling everything you touch, stem cell research, peoples rights (Abortion), who are any of you to impose your will upon others?
As scientist and physicians and Christians, trying to be more loving, caring, selfless, as Christ taught is not a drag on society. I bet you would enjoy me as a neighbor and trust your children in my care. Differences are real and very important. Let us understand our differences and learn from each other.
I'll tell you what, when christians, but out of everyone else lives, and clean up their own backyard, remove the political machine to vote in their own puppets to further their agenda, then and only then can we discuss co-existence. Till then I take it as my personal duty to openly point out the obvious flaws in your outdated concepts and religion. There will be no compromise. I have to ask would you take it upon yourself to preach to my child?
And where pray tell, do you get that total line of BS from dipshit, is that what your religious right tell you you fucking sheep? Look further into the matter jerk wad before posting asinine shit like that.
Wow, thanks for insulting me instead of being an adult and addressing my post. Where did I get this info you ask? Oh, ya know, only from a medical textbook on how to perform abortions. The book is called "Abortion Practice" by Warren M. Hern. For a sheep I read pretty well actually.
A quote for you... "The procedure changes significantly at 21 weeks because the fetal tissues become much more cohesive and difficult to dismember. The calvaria [head] is no longer the principal problem; it can be collapsed. Other structures, such as the pelvis, present more difficulty....A long curved Mayo scissors may be necessary to decapitate and dismember the fetus... "(p.154).
Yeah, those pesky Christians are the world's biggest threat. ::rolls eyes::
Christians are the WORLDS biggest threat we are currently in a war that dam near no one in the world believes is right because your "Christian" president sold you a line of shit, when in fact he is using your ignorance to spill blood for oil. I blame you.
I'm glad you have listed Christians as public enemy #1. I feel sorta special now. It's nice to know that I'm a bigger threat to the world than Islamic extremists who slit people's throats, bomb innocent people, and fly planes into buildings. I didn't know protecting life was more hositle than taking it.
Right thats not near as bad as killing thousands of US soldiers, and hundreds of thousands of "innocent" civilians in their own country, as an unwanted occupying force, to force upon the locals the "doing of Gods will". That whack job you voted in is killing and has killed unchecked for so long no one can even keep up with the actual body count, now we just count the US dead.
Kevin Philips' book, American Dynasty, refers to Bush as the "Leader of the Religious Right. Read it get educated to how Bush used you sheep to totally fuck our economy, swap blood for oil, and increase the defense budget four fold, the largest increase ever. And then to "clear out" our old war stock he started a war.
meeting was not open to the press because it revealed the true feelings of GOP leaders that they don't want to become common knowledge even among rank-and-file Republicans, much less to moderates and independents.
t's not fiscal or economic conservatives who are the "heart" of the party. It's philosophical or social conservatism with roots going back to Burke that is the "heart" of the party. No, the heart and soul of the Republican Party today lies with the culture warriors of the Christian Right: Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and all the other people who would make America a very different, very scary place to live in.
The term "radical/religious right" refers to groups which, despite other ideological differences, share in common that they pose a threat to liberty, democracy and pluralism. They are "radical" in that they advocate extreme and dramatic changes in society. They are "religious" in that they tend to base their ideologies upon religious doctrines and religious texts.
Like I said sheep, not pain or brain activity exist till well on in the birthing process. That "quack" you quoted has been denounced many times as a "Christian" sympathizer, and is the go to book for sheep who need some sort of back up to in their minds prove false statements.
f someone has a claim to a right to live, shouldn't they have some sort of independent life of their own? A fetus is only able to live because it is attached to the womb of the mother; therefore, any claim to a "right" to live must necessarily be at the expense of the woman. The same isn't true of anyone else — at most, a person's claim might entail support and help from the community at large. It would not, however, entail being hooked up to the circulatory system of another human.
I think in order to argue both sides you have to experience both. I think to really know or speak about something you have to be a witness to it. Most people who don't believe in God seem to not have a reason to other then the fact that they don't want to. I guess the question is why do you want to make a case against God?
