@kingpleasure for some reason this album was called "lost episodes" and ppl like u still complain about cd versions or vinyl rofl this stuff is hard to find you know
@micheljch Yes, that's what I meant, but of course I could be wrong and maybe that wasn't the actual original version?? A number of the songs on "Cruising..." were first done on "Freak Out!" and because "Fountain of Love" wasn't among them I assumed that it was original to "Cruising..." But maybe it rwas recorded for Freak Out! and then left off the album, and that's why the call it "lost episodes". Is that what happened?
@kingpleasure TLE includes material from all different time periods. "Fountain of Love" on there actually dates from pre-Mothers days, 1963 I think, and features Paul Buff on bass - Buff was the original owner of PAL studios in Cucamonga that became "Studio Z" when FZ bought it from him. FZ & Ray Collins worked together several yrs b4 the MOI proper & sold their first song "Memories of el Monte" around this time. "Cruising" was recorded in late '67 so TLE version is actually the original.
There's definitely a bit of cross-pollination going on between "Freak Out" and "Crusing" though, to be sure. I prefer the version of "I'm Not Satisfied" on "Cruising" to the one on "Freak Out", but have to admit I like them both.
IIRC, in the liner notes FZ recalled that the bass was played through a Sears amp; they plugged the bass into the MIC input "and something bad happaned". I love it!
I'm loving this distorted sound.

this is utterly BADASS! Love the Fountain of Love. I think Zappa did this in 1963-pre Mothers.

this is the remixed cd vesion and nowhere as good as the original vinyl version. In fact it sucks by comparison, I'm sad to say.

@kingpleasure when you say "the original vinyl version" are you referring to the version on the "Cruising with Reuben and the Jets" LP?

@kingpleasure Uh, no it's not. This was recorded about 4 or 5 years before Cruising came out.
