GENIUS I SAW HIM AND HIS BAND IN SAN JOSE 2 OR 3 YEARS AGO HE PLAYED THIS AND BEMSA SWING APPARENTLY HE DID A WHOLE MONK ALBLUM CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HIM AGAIN HE WAS BORN IN 1927 DON'T FOR GET TO GIVE UR JAZZ FRIENDS HIS ALBLUMS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Is it not a particularly good chart? So Holman wasn't really interested in doing it...
Holman must be a genius. ..Know what it means writing those uncredibly difficult lines while not being interested? I don't care about the head..I care about the creativity displayed by the arranger and his treatment of melody going over the chords ...Don't forget Holman was arranger for the Stan Kenton band..Not everybody was capable to write charts for that orchestra...
I don't know if I have ever read so many stupid comments and criticisms of music that is beyond your comprehension. I wonder if ANY of you have ever played in a band that could even attempt to perform this. Both the arrangement and the performance are wonderful. There is no other arrangement similar to this ANYWHERE, and the band is terrific. "Plugmalion" seems to have a pretty good idea of what is going on. You amateur critics need to close your mouths, and open your ears.
my synopsis: Bill Holman - great !!!! > Opening piano solo - love it, great, outstanding playing and technique, great interpretation. > first ensemble statement - interesting augmentation, interesting close of the phrase. > second time through nice drive by the rhythm section but I feel the ensemble writing (at this point) seems repetitive and rather boring, ala Phillip Glass, , until Moodys' solo begins, then, It's back to great interesting lines and dynamics etc. love that end
@trumpetman - The tune is there the whole time. In a small group you would only hear more of what he does at the beginning with the piano solo. His extensions, rhythmic syncopations, and chordal substitutions are beautiful. Very nice way of adapting a very common tune to a modern interpretation.
Ok this tune should remain in the combo setting to avoid things like this. I waited two minutes to hear the head only to hear some strange augmentation of it. What a relief it was for the solo section to start. I pity the audience.
@trumpetman2525 The tune is there the whole time. In a small group you would only hear more of what he does at the beginning with the piano solo. His extensions, rhythmic syncopations, and chordal substitutions are beautiful. Very nice way of adapting a very common tune to a modern interpretation.
@trumpetman2525 thats exactly what i was gonna say. if moody didnt have that solo, this would have been a huge dissapointment. now its just a dissapointment
@hommefriday He didn't say that he didn't like the band - he doesn't like the -chart-.
The band sounds amazing and makes a VERY difficult chart sound easy, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not a particularly good chart in the first place. The head is basically unrecognizable and the opening 200+ bar unison thing he wrote gets downright -boring- after awhile.
As I said in a prior comment, I think this is a chart he just wasn't really interested in doing in the first place.
@atpal I agree. The chart really isn't even Just Friends, it's basically an extended solo written for the band as a unit. Unless you happen to recognize the changes as Just Friends, you won't even catch the brief mention of the head he throws in at the beginning.
Bill Holman's writing is usually much, MUCH better than this. I'm guessing this is a chart he wasn't really interested in doing.
@atpal Do you have an ear!? The harmonies on this charts are great. And if you think it sounds easy it's because the band plays it extremely well....As a musician I can relate to the fact that when you are in a group that can read well and collectively are playing their asses off, a difficult chart played well will sound easy.....if you play an instrument pick up your horn, better yet try to play this piece in your bigband.....
I have no idea if Bill intended this, but I interpret the unison sections as being a written improvised solo for big band, building like an improvised solo would. If you listen to it like that, it might help your enjoyment and understanding of the chart.
SO BORING! I'm okay with unison lines but this is absurd. What's the point of having a big band if you do stuff like this? Of course, Moody tears it up, much respect for him. The band, though extremely talented, is lifeless!

Holman. Moody. A swingin' rhythm section - and horns that are right in there with them. So damn good!

This is an unbelievably difficult chart. The WDR Big Band deserves a lot of credit for making it sound so easy.
