ziad-- to change spound, yes, but more precisely, to change pitch. It happens in the throat by directing the airstream up and down. More info at web site called musically-hopeless Jon
Just want to let you know how much you've influenced my musical career. Many, many years ago (early 80s) I bought your Natural Country and Blues Harmonica book with accompanying cassette tapes. It really lifted the veil about the concept of playing cross harp and I've been playing ever since. I still have remnants of the book stashed in a drawer somewhere. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I didn't play the blues harmonica. Thanks for all you do!
I've been trying to wrap my head around I-IV-V for a while now (I never had any music lessons in school because of budget cuts back in the day), and this video is the very first one that lays it out simply, methodically, and effectively. Everyone else just turns music theory into alphabet soup. Thanks for being a great teacher Jon and providing me with a eureka moment in a single video!
I can't respond to you as an individual because I have not heard you.
But If you are doing it right, yes indeedy, it is easy and you have good control of the pitches.
A lot of times people think they are bending when they are only wiggling the note. It is easy to deceive yourself when there is no one to give you feedback.
If you think you are bending the 2 draw, compare it to your 5 draw, as 2 draw whole step bend is the same
How do you get that whole step draw on the two note? I have good harps in different keys and can bend other notes easily, but I can't pull 2-draws a whole step. Also, John Mayall starts on a C#-B riff, which is a 5 blow/4 draw on an A harp, or a 3 draw/draw bend in D. I love this piece and it certainly would be an easier jam in second position, which would take an F# harp to play along with the record.
It's tough, man. Just takes practice -- try starting with a lower key. I first got a good bend on the 2 draw with a harp in A, now I can pretty much nail is on command with my C. Just run that 2 draw blues riff seen here over and over again. Good luck to you!
Thanks. I figured this out a few days after posting, but I found it easier on my C harp before going down to the A. It seems to take me a bit more air on the lower keys.
It has become an obsession...can any of you guys help me with a tab to " The creeper returns" ? I need to learn to play this song or I am going crazy Lol Thx for any help!
I have just realized why blues singers are always singing about losing their women, blues has become such an obsession that my woman is already feeling left out!!
Great lessons, I hope you know how inspiring your talent at teaching is. Since I have started learning to play blues on the harp, everything else seems minor. (excuse the pun!)
I can't say enough about Jon's books. His book got me started playing harmonica and I have never looked back. All it took was lots and lots of hard work and practice, and Jon's book. I listened to his tapes in my car (before CD's), crove with my knees, and blew harp every day, and then after a few months I was ready to take a few lessons from a local Blues master and Bam! I got the blues! Thanks Jon!
The info on the video say's "For C Harp"...I have a C Harp here and it sure doesn't have the notes you're playing bro! Mayall does the song in Db, which would make the harp an F# harp, 2nd position...right? So, someone help me get started with this tune...what key and what type of harp to I need to play along with Jon here?
I could listen to John all day. His encouraging, laid back enthusiasm is very motivating. When I feel I'm not getting anywhere, I watch a few of John's videos and I'm fired up again.
Your videos are great, and your homepage as well. The Ule Bule jam sessions, together with this video, are helping me to build and develop my own bluesy licks. Inspiring!
One thing I'm missing here on youtube though is instructions for hand techniques, so if you have the time to share some basic and some advanced techniques I'd be happier than I am today. And I'm already happy (partially because of you).

To play with this lesson, You DO need a C harp, and you need to be able to bend the 2 draw and the 3 draw. I'd guess you aren't bending yet,
and suggest you get my bending and tone lesson.
