@WanderingOff You are criticizing the choir for singing the piece with proper diction and vowels. There is nothing unusual about the way the carol is sung here. Anglican choirs traditionally cultivate a warm sound, using rounded vowels and flipped Rs. There's nothing particularly "posh" about it. Nor is the carol folk, or folk-ish, but rather quite in line with traditional Anglican church music. It would be sung as you might sing William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, or Charles Villiers Stanford.
It's highly unlikely Matt that these are their own accents. You mean Cambridgeshire? Obviously not. Choral scholars come from all over. The dialect is applied; it's not their own, even if they are very, very posh. You think they speak like this in Sainsburys? I think not. I dislike it because it's an imposed poshness which is now very old fashioned. Even BBC newsreaders no longer speak like this. Apart fromt that the choir is magnificent and I would never miss them on any December 24th.
@WanderingOff When you study and sing it professionally in choirs, that's exactly how you are supposed to pronounce the vowels. My choral director is constantly telling us to sing a choral piece, such as this, you need to have very round vowels (this is achieved by raising the soft palate in the back of your throat, like when you yawn). You are also supposed to roll the R's so that they are properly pronounced and you don't have an "err" sound. It does sound pretentious, but they are correct.
i know that they're an english choir but why is it that they sing with that accent? just curious. or is that an english accent and i'm just not on the same boat as everyone else?
Absolute PERFECTION! God Bless You all! I have had the pleasure of singing this arrangement and everytime I do, or hear such as your choir is doing here, it brings me to the realizations that believing in Jesus Christ - I am truly blessed. Once again, thank you for this wonderful sound. :)

For example. "The tree of life my.....soil?.. has seen" or "Jesus Chrrrrist the appelll trrrrree" Oh please. Just sing it simply. It's personal. It's almost folk. Not baroque music for snobs.
As lovely as this performance is, I do prefer the version this choir performed back in the '90s when it was the lower key. But that's not saying too much, I promise! This choir is so exquisite, it's hard to find any fault. :)
Yes they are in C Major, was the person who said their choirmaster changed the key actually in the choir that time? This was shown by BBC2 on Christmas Eve, what a lovely piece.
Beautiful singing, indeed.

@MrRocha90 It's not a Catholic choir but an Anglican one.
Choirs of men and boys are common in English cathedrals and college chapels, also...

@WanderingOff You are exaggerating immensely. They're just flipping the R's, and the vowel is a product of their accent.

I remember our choirmaster changing the key of the piece, especially if he thought it better suited the choirs' voices on that particular day.
