  • Super song

  • @mypigpile I agree- Neil is one of my Musical Gods, & him doing Leonard Cohen is just icing on the cake! I also think that I was saved by ND- when I got my first Brain Injury, my friends & Family played him for me when I was in a coma

  • Neil is great and love this version, but must agree that KD has them all beat

  • this made me cry becuase im such a emotional person :'D

  • amazing.

  • YOU DID A GREAT JOB,A++++,WELL DONE!!

    DRAGA

  • grandioso aporte

  • I love Neil Diamond, and have for many years. However, I think that k.d.lang has gotten all versions beaten. Hers is remarkable.

  • @Mississaugamiss2010 .. gotta agree with ya, MississaugaMiss! .. I've been following The Neil for 30 -odd years, this is goo-od, not quite up to Neil's old passion, but goo-ood. HOWEVER, KD's got them all ('cept Leonard) beat on her Olympics version - such passion! such emotion! .. & timing!

My family get PO'd 'cos I've got it on a loop in my car!

  • I just love this song and I am surprised that Neil Diamond still sing so great. Thanks for sharing. Ingmarie.

  • I love Neil Diamond and this song.Ingmarie.

  • 7 people were tied to a kitchen chair, their throne was broken and their hair was cut.

  • K.D. Lang version way better!!

  • I've heard multitudes of singers dperform this song but I've never herd one enunciate the lyric wording with the clarity that Neil does here.

  • this song reminds me of lucky luke ^^

  • Memorias de infância com Neil, meu Pai me ensinou a ouvir boa música também e Neil Diamond fez parte dessa infância linda que tive. Obrigado meu Pai.

  • This is fantastic.

  • he is fab...and mypigpile i agree...he nailed it....x

  • I can't believe it! This is the first time I have heard this version. Neil has always been one of my favorites and now here he is singing this song that I love. Since he is singing by himself one can understand every word. Cohen, of course, is the very best but this ranks right up there. I have listened to many singers do this song. Thanks Neil for your gentle version. k.d.lang would be right up there to make the top three.

  • When I was a child, my father listened to Neil Diamond so his singing evokes more emotion. It is man (and women) free will. It is all choices. A choice to follow directions, if one looks at it taking away any personal accountability. I understand one must feed their family, feed yes, not live fancy, by hurting someone else. I forgive because I believe that individuals make choices. No one has absolute consequences or they would have helped me in person way I believe is best, not way they interp

  • No one else but you, Neil.

  • What a beautiful song! This is the first time I heard

    Neil Diamond sing it.

    methodistgirl

  • @methodistgirl I agree with you!! Have you heard Neil sing "The Story of My Life"?? If you haven't, then you should check it out!! It's a great one, too!!

  • @clakey66 Love the song...My husband and I had it for our wedding 21 yrs ago....

  • My favorite song of all time. kd lang and Neil... both the most excellent versions (after Leonard's of course). Each singer puts that little different feeling to the song. And yes... the candles are perfect here. The lord of song would even agree.

  • I love Neil Diamond's interpretation of this wonderful song. Thanks for sharing it with us Blaze ...

  • I think Jeff Buckleys is the best. But this is 2nd. I LOVE Neil's work. He is awesome and so is this

  • @YankeesFan910

    totalmente de acuerdo

  • One of the most beautifully sang versions of this song I have heard. Thank you, Lord Jesus......Hallelujah.......Thanks for sharing with us.

  • Awesome Neil Diamond!!

  • Love the candles ... what a beautiful video! Thank you for this artful rendition.

  • Good choice of burning candles!

  • " I've seen your flag on the marble arch, love is not a victory march..?" What is this referencing? Is the an allusion to the Nazi occupation of Paris?

  • Beautiful - Hallelujah

  • Would love to hear a young ND, with greater range, sing this great song.

  • can u believe Neil can sound this good after all these years... I'm in. Think he nailed it. This is in my top three remakes of this song.

  • I love Neil Diamond and any version of any song he sings, I am interested in using this song at my husbands funeral mass. I heard a version with some of the words changed to make it more appropriate to a catholic funeral mass. Instead of saying you saw her bathing on the rough-------etc---words were just slifghtly changed, Anybody know where I could get the words to the more appropriate words to a funeral mass????

  • @913tmcgee Looking at the word I don't think its a religious song... not a good for funeral

  • Do you think this song is appropiate for a funeral mass???

  • Thank You - this is wonderful & moving.

  • Wonderful version. Neil's deep, unique voice; you can hear the 70 years of a well-lived life. Nice video interpretation too. Thanks for posting.

  • Beautiful and breath taking.... beautiful candles.......Awsome

  • I love this....I love Jon Bon Jovi doing it a bit better, and want David Cook to do it, he will do it even better than these two!

  • @klizmusic

    check out Jeff Buckley's version

  • I used to be a purist myself but now as I get older I realize more and more just HOW VERY MANY GREAT ARTISTS are out there. I'm a big Neil Diamond fan, a huge Leonard Cohen fan, a GIGANTIC Jeff Buckley fan, a so so fan of Rufus Wainwright, a so so fan of K.D. Lang and a huh/whatever fan of John Cale but every one of them does a great job on this song in their own way. Kudos have to go to L.C. though first for writing such a beautiful song!

  • @andyvinstra For a fabulous female version of this song, check out YouTube "Hallelujah Allison Williams"

It has 1,800,000 views and rave reviews!

  • @JGMagoo Also, check out Say Chance's cover. It's amazing, trust me.

  • Neil always does a nice job tmb1969 , where have you been sonny boy for the last 40 plus years??????? Neil gave this song its pure and distinct meaning. Nothing compares to Diamonds understanding and delivery of a message or song. wake up to real music old timer.

  • The more I listen to this song sung by Neil the more I realize that Neil has it figured out. Even the Writer of this song perverted its soul. Listen till you get it. those who have miniminal understading of music will dispute the statement I have made. Sorry that, that is the way it is. Listen I say till you get it.

  • Much respect to Mr. Diamond, but Leonard Cohen wrote hundreds of other songs besides "Hallelujah" that are worth covering. Now this song shows up everywhere, even with the hacks on "American Idol". Cohen himself said we've had enough versions of it and it's time to move on to something else, but no one is listening. Diamond does a nice job though.

  • @TMB1969 You said it best. Look at the Cohen songs recorded by himself and others. To be a staple in today's market one MUST posses a totally UNIQUE VOICE or DELIVERY or WRITING SKILLS. Look at all the want -to- bes that have come and gone. Not because they couldn't sing, but because they were only a group of forgettable average good singers. Those that do write music impeccably and sing good also will always have the edge.

  • LC admits he is not the singer he wishes. But he is indeed a genius in much of what he has written, especially with Hallalujah and Thousand Kisses Deep! Even though he may 'own' it, he gives an intangible gift to anyone who can play a guitar or piano and who can sing, even a little. What a gift it is, too. Personally, my favorite cover of this song is by Justin Timberlake. Heavenly music, thanks to LC.

  • Umm, he's not singing. he's talking in tones. :/

  • Crap, even Justin Timberlake sings it better than this. Neil kinda murders a really great song!

  • This song belongs to K.D. Lang

    dwbw2720

  • Neil sings this song BEST.....

  • Thank you Neil for this incredible song.

  • This is the way Leonard Cohen always WISHED he could sing in his dreams.

  • What a peace, what a serenity one feels by listening to this splendid song and the video images do nothing but embellish it more! Thank you

  • @maphaldadita Thank you very much for your compliments. I greatly appreciate it :)

  • @Blaze8674 His own? any singer with a bit of talent can sing this well...

But how many could have compose this...

You know the anwser my friend.

  • the silly comparison of Diamond and Cohen, it like comparing a football to a to a Banty egg. Diamond is not competeing for any praise or superior place on any song he does, because he is simply giving you himself. the untrained ear and a dead soul will strain at a nat in desperation for some reason or another. Be still and know that I am the lord said the lord. let simple, pretty sounds and tones be the stone that sharpens the ax. L. Cohen trys hard but has not an ounce of beauty in his being.

  • @moneypip you certainly have me stunned. You are mixing a lot of verses taken in fragments from the Bible to explain what? MUSIC IS SUBJECTIVE? We all have our favorites and opinions. You say, Buckley, another Diamond, still others, Timberlake, K.D. Lang. It's good to join hands with like persons. This is what sells CD's.

Be careful not to make talking about an artist recording the best version of a song---- a religious experience.

  • why would you say you are AFRAID this song belongs to Leonard Cohen?. You can say that, and its fine, so no need to be afraid. to me the Heart and Soul and Raw Talent of Diamond is expressed in His Version of the Lyrics but the lyrics are also made Perfect with Neil giving this song the perfect touch. : I've seen your flag on the marble arch, Love is not a victory march, its a cold and broken Hallelujah. you may likely be a very good polish for a paint but you can't find true luster my friend.

  • I am afraid this song belongs to Leonard Cohen, all others just don't cut it

  • @havenoneatall Well of course it belongs to Leonard but I still think Neil does a fantastic version. He makes it his own....

  • @Blaze8674

I am very much a heavy Diamond fan. However, Neil also recorded 'He Ain't Heavy...',and it was superb, but it's still a Hollies signature song. Neil recorded ' Suzanne' and did a tremendous rendition, However it also still belongs to Leonard for the best recording. Neil has many signature songs of his own. I think he misses a lot on his latest CD- 'DREAMS'. The songs are TOO TIRED of being recorded so much. There can't be a lack of new songwriters out there, can there? Geez Neil, !

  • @Blaze8674 Prefer Neil's voice...style...version.

  • @havenoneatall you may lack an ear for the voice and natural beauty. King David was drawn in by beauty. Beauty is what this song is all about Beauty, and Beauty alone. some can see it and hear it, while others wonder what is taking place. lol.

  • @moneypip

take a chill. three replies, WOW? Here's a question to settle your mind. Do you believe that Neil Diamond has written and even recorded songs that just cannot be delivered by any other artist ( signature songs ) because he has the best recording that is not to be improved on? This doesn't mean other artists didn't do a great job, but preference is for the originator or first one. Music is SUBJECTIVE all the time. I am glad you're a die hard Diamond fan. I love his music also.

  • @havenoneatall

I agree. So many cover versions were made, none even close to the original.

Not that they're bad, they just don't hold a candle to it.

  • @havenoneatall This song is great by Leonard, but there are many amazing covers of it. This one and Jeff Buckley both do it justice.

  • @havenoneatall The only other one I think that holds a candle is Buckley's. Tough to listen to anyone else's version than Cohen's

  • @havenoneatall I think you didn't listen to Jeff Buckley singing Hallelujah...I'm a big fan of Loenard , but I've think he wrote that song with jeff in mind...

  • @lauraf30 I totally agree with you. I think Jeff Buckley's version is the most beautiful, dispate of many very good version from different singers (Rufus' version is very nice to). And I also think Leonard had Jeff in mind wile writing this song.

  • @lauraf30 I did listen, it is a great covering of this song. My subjective point of view is that usually the one that pens the song has the emotion to place the voice with the emphasis at the proper place he or she intended. This is an edge providing you don't care for the writer being the singer. I believe some singers own the song. This means later recordings just don't surpass or equal though they are excellent in their own rights. Anyone can record music, but can they write it ? Some can!

  • @havenoneatall I actually didn't hear Leonard Cohen's version till after I heard Rufus Wainwright's version, then Jeff Buckley's version. I like them all, but Jeff Buckley's was the one that struck the deepest, for me, anyway.

  • @havenoneatall All credit goes to Leonard Cohen for writing it, but there is no way you can honestly tell me he does the best version (musically) compared to the versions that followed. C'mon, Jeff Buckley sang that so beautifully that his guitar cries from the notes he hit with his voice.

  • @havenoneatall I respectfully honor your opinion, but in My Humble Opinion,Neil Diamond has it nailed.

  • Breathtaking! Beautiful video.... thanks for sharing! Hearing Neil Diamond, my all time favorite singers, interpret this, one of my all time favorite songs is amazing.

  • thank you so much for this great video, it's wonderfull , i'm fan of n;DIAMOND.... you make a very good job !

  • Great song. Great interpretation. Great video. THANKS to all!

  • Thanks for the post...mixed feelings about this song, just not sure about meaning.......Neil's lyrics will always be my favorite....his heart is soul felt and lovingly free to express....hugs

  • @jordan04n "I wanted to write something in the tradition of the hallelujah choruses but from a different point of view... It's the notion that there is no perfection ~ that this is a broken world and we live with broken hearts and broken lives but still that is no alibi for anything. On the contrary, you have to stand up and say hallelujah under those circumstances." ~Leonard Cohen~

  • Pleasant, though unremarkable, version of this much covered song.

  • Your video interpretation of Neil singing this fabulous song is fantastic. Thank you so much for putting this up. It is wonderful!

  • Blaze- there are millions of Diamondheads in this world and I have the privledge of being the first to comment- I am a hardcore diamond and Cohen fan, so I have been waiting 25 years to hear this song- it is the second best song in the English language- the first: Sounds of Silence. I guess this is the greatest song ever written by a Canadian.
