If they kill him, they try to save Cocoon even if it is said that killing him will destroy it. They just don't cower in the face of fal'Cie lies because, from what I grasped, all of their tricks are illusions, and the crystal stasis is a form of control of the mind. But yeah, that's my interpretation xD
