I bet the extra string length is what gives it the extra volume. I don't think I've ever seen a flattop with a tailpiece like yours. Do you know what make that is?
I think my old guitar is a no-label Harmony with an archtop and a soundhole. It's full of cracks but is still playable, whereas most of the old Harmony/Stella guitars have warped necks because they don't have steel in the necks.

That thing cost me a cool $100 at a pawn shop. Really loud when you hit it hard. It's my favorite guitar now.
