John Landis and Bob Giraldi were so annoying around this time. They really thought they deserved something because they directed his videos! Bob Giraldi came on stage during the Grammys. They are the reason that these shows have special categories for the directors now because truth be told nobody cares who directed a video. The artist is the main focus so they really needed a slice of humble pie.

Why the hell did John go up there?! Michael asked Diana to accept the award not him. That was very rude and arrogant of him. He came prepared with a list and everything how rude!
How is John Landis is coming on stage. That was out of hand. I hate to say this, but it's a little arrogance on his part. Evidently, it was arranged for Diana to accept the award for him because it was in the script. And, if John had the intent to come up on stage he could have let Diana known during a break.
In response to all of these comments, some things to remember: This was MTVs first event like this, and parts of it were VERY disorganized. Some of these people had never met each other before, let alone give out awards to each other. Even 'stars' get nervous. Also backstage, the free booze was flowing like water, and so was the magic 'nose candy'.
vascco68 if you look at the video over again, you'll notice that ross was taken by surprise with john landis also accepting the award for michael. diana was the only one mentioned, and here is john. that preoccuppied her concentration, and only had a few seconds to react. again, people think it's so easy to be up on stage at the spur of the moment live. try it yourself and see if you don't screw up in front of millions of people.
The camera shows Diana approach Billy from behind. She could have smiled and said hi but we cant see it from our angle. Also John was on Diana Heels so she really didn't have alot of time to react to Billy, but I don't think she was rude at all. Its hard to assume :)
