Excellent, excellent collection. With regards to the Criterion part, I WAS a Criterion completist-wannabe as well but after awhile I think it's kind of silly. Even though every single films released by CC is an important and exemplary film, as a human being there is NO WAY you can actually LIKE every single film on such a broad and diverse collection. Sooner or later, after owning some few hundred CC Blu-ray discs and DVDs, I was just buying them for the sake of completing, and that's SILLY.
Pretty good Criterion Collection films you got there. You should check out 'Seven Samurai' and 'The Battle of Algiers'. That last one is my favorite blu ray set in my entire blu ray and dvd library, 'Seven Samurai' is almost equally as epic. I also see you have 'The Seventh Seal', happens to be my second favorite film and second best blu ray in my library.
@MegaMytube99 And I learned how to pronounce it from the American trailer right before I watched the movie, and that was a LONG time ago. I didn't mean to sound angry, or offensive; he just mispronounced the title. That's not a big deal. And sorry for the grammatical error. *pronounced
Case in point, look at the versions of movies like The Last Samurai, Planet Earth etc. Or many other pre-mid-2008 blu-rays.
Most blu-ray releases did not have BD-Live and only had Dolby 5.1 audio or DTS 5.1 whereas the HD-DVD's had Dolby TrueHD etc. Also many hd-dvd's allowed dvd combo capability on one disc. The only thing that killed hd-dvd was the fact ps3's had blu-ray. Otherwise, Blu-ray was an incomplete spec that offered half the stuff HD-DVD did. That being said, I now have over 100 BD's
Why prefer HD-DVD a lot of you have asked. Did you know in the beginning, HD-DVD was FAR superior to blu-ray? Blu-ray didn't have Dolby True-HD audio and barely had DTS-HD MA. They also lacked extras and features. Sometimes, even the video transfer was worse. This is why, prior to mid 2008, several versions of HD-DVD 30 gb movies are far superior to their 25 gb blu-ray counterparts.
I own about 55 hd-dvd's I got for about 2 dollars each after it lost the war
How much did you pay for the third man? It's one of the more rare criterion films considering they no longer own the rights and the studio canal now owns the rights. I's seen it go for as much as 200 bucks.
@ RetroGamerDaz: Can you tell me, if the Criterion blu ray of The Third Man has only been released in this particular case, in wich you have it? This case would be alike the one of The Man who fell to Earth and others of your CC. I'd like to know, if The Third Man is or was available in the normal Criterion blu-ray-case. Thanks in advance!
@123xdrdre The Third Man has been released as a Criterion, but they lost the rights to the film, so it's out of print. You can find copies from friends, eBay or Amazon from Third Party sellers, but expect to pay $80+ for a copy. If you just want the film on BD, though, you can buy the Studio Canal release, although I've heard mixed reviews on that release.
That has been OOPrint as freshnjays23 said. Officially it was only released in the cardboard case. However, if you contact Criterion or in particular Jon Mulvaney at mulvaney@criterion(dot)com you might (but doubtfully) be able to attain a plastic replacement case which Criterion does offer at a small cost. Since it's been OOP for a while though it might no longer be available.
Hopefully you already own the modestly superior Criterion version of the Third Man for you wallets sake.
@PaintYourSilence Thanks for your information. I bought the film a few days ago from amazon.com at a high price. I'd think, Criterion wouldn't replace my cardboard case, because they would have to send the plastic case to Germany. And maybe they'd want me to send my case and booklet to the U.S. If I had to pay the USA-Germany shipping-rates it wouldn't be worth it at all.
Once again, excellent collection! Do you have a region free Blu Ray player? or just use the PS3? 'coz I noticed you had a couple of the Blu Ray digi books which I believe are US only, are they region free though?
My friend is a huge criterion collector, but of the DVD variety, she has so many! They are pretty amazing!
@scenester64 There is no reason to stick to DVD when it comes to Criterion unless the film is only on DVD. The Criterion blu-rays are usually priced the same or less than their DVD counterparts on Amazon.
@JBURGAN8001 It's not bad at all mate. It suffers a little due to the overuse of synthy screeching effects. But it depicts a descent into madness brilliantly well.
Nice collection guy, I really enjoyed the spotlight on your Criterion collection. I strongly agree with you about "Wages of Fear", fantastic film. Thank you for your comments on "El Norte" I'm going to pick it up. Thanks again for sharing.
Have you watched any Mystery Science Theater 3000? I don't think they have any Blu-ray releases, but man, you just got to check it out if you don't know about it.
Jesus dude, is there anything you don't collect? I limited myself to James Bond Blurays, so it doesn't spiral out of control, like my kungfu DVD collection.
You've got my Blu-Ray Collection beat... I only have 2. But one of those is Army of Darkness so I think I'm pretty well done on collecting Blu-Ray movies until the price comes way down.

I know you're "not crazy" about DVDs, but you have to buy Akira Kurosawa's "Ran", it's unquestionably one of the greatest films ever made.

Also why anyone would ever say they prefer HD-DVD is beyond me. Not a single discernible pro over blu-ray format. (can you tell I love blu-ray?)

Well they don't require you to turn in your cardboard case. Just pay the fee for the case itself. But at least now you know it's an option.
