  • @60jellybean Then who is it?

  • @uneedtherapy42 what the hell does jeff beck have to do with this?? Rory Gallagher kicks Jeff Becks azzzzz!!! hahahahahaaaaaaaaaa Love Sly & the Family tooooo♥

  • @rothcam2 Jeff Beck's problem is he could NEVER WRITE ANY THING HIMSELF!!! Now listen to Sly who could.

  • @streetparade you are wrong.

  • WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS TODAY!!!. . . .I'M 64 and remember this in my day and it was ROCKING and still is!!!

  • great moment, the best in woodstock, nice song, maybe the best song in the world!

  • Just awesome

  • I was in a cruddy mood, then I heard this song... (:

  • George Clinton called them 'the best funk band that ever was'. That says a lot.

  • First song at first Summerfest Milwaukee 1970

  • Sly, The Chambers Bros, EWF.....miss those groups....they were definitely hip back in my younger days.....still, this music gets me going ~ I have good memories!

  • 12 DISLIKES by 12 folks with pokers up their butts.

  • Wanna take u hiiiiigheeeer... F'ing A , man !

  • One of the best groups ever, fond memories!!!

  • What the hell is a "boom locka"?

  • @asfranko1 That was a counter culture expression for "In your face!"

  • @asfranko1 No funk for you....

  • I think I made LIKE # 1000. There's no button for LOVE. My childhood revisited!!!!

  • This was a very well known band and still is. Why else have so many dedicated fans on these posts? Only unhappy people don't like this band.

  • I partied my ass off to all this music, when it and I were young. My journey, whoooo continues

  • Still Kick ass MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DID YOU KNOW JIMI HENDRIX WAS SUPPOSED TO MEEET SLY AND THE BAND TO JAM THE NIGHT HE DIED. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW THERE MUSIC WOULD HAVE SOUNDED TOGETHER . WOW !!!

  • This is some of the best music ever.....any category.

  • Fine example of what ROSEANNE BARR once said. "THERE'S NOTHING ANY WORSE THAN POOR PEOPLE SUDDENLY GETTING MONEY AND FAME"

  • Sly owns a four bedroom house that he refuses to set foot in!

He feels that the CIA can track him if he is in the house.

  • @svtyorkville And you know that's true,,HOW ???

  • I just read that Sly has fallen on hard times and is living in an RV in LA...but plans to go into rehab.....I wish him well, and hope we can hear some new music from him soon...because we need some relief from the crap that is being produced currently..

    Get well soon, Sly!

  • @FMHammyJ He will need THE WHOLE UNIT OR GANG to reproduce anything like they did before. These people all get a big head and think THEY ARE the STAR. The GROUP was always THE STAR. Plus GOOD MANAGEMENT and common sense. There are quite a few of the old rock stars that use their heads,,invest,,spend their money wisely and they just keep plugging along. Sly is a victim of what James Brown said to me once THE CRAB BUCKET SYNDROME.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 Oh I agree, the whole was greater than the sum of the parts.....and when I think about it, Sly and the Family Stone was one of the first to have black and white musicians together....another groundbreaker....but I guess thats what "Everyday People" was about....

Anyways, even if he doesnt make anymore music, I hope he gets clean for his own sake.....Hopefully he receives enough in royalties to live comfortably without the pipe.....

  • @FMHammyJ I was a record promotion man for MGM records for a year and a half between radio jobs and I can tell you there's some weird stuff that goes on. My boss was Ben Scotti (ex Qback for Phila. eagles in the 60's) He was VP of promotions. Anyway from what I understand Michael Jackson and Sony Music own all of Sly's songs. Sony only now I guess. So Sly might've took a cash payout instead of royalties. There's a lot of odd situations in that business. They own The Beatles songs also.

  • @FMHammyJ Many artists came upon hard times with the British Invasion and sold the rights to their songs just to keep the wolf away from the door. Bo Diddley was one of them. Bo was bitter about that the rest of his life.

Bo was my friend and I will miss him the rest of my life. First Recording Star I ever booked for one of my Teen Dancelands. When Record Hops were all the rage. Wellsville,Ohio 1958. Booked James Brown several times until he got to big and expensive.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 Hey man, thanks for the info,....it seems very ironic that a lot of white British artists of the Invasion were simply trying to copy black music, and in doing so, were making life tough for the originators....Bo Diddley played my hometown a few months before he passed....wished I had been able to see him.....

  • @FMHammyJ Yeah a great compliment to our originators. They also brought many of our R&B acts to the fore. Lennon loved Chuck Berry. I was "in radio" back in those days and I know that when the R&B artists toured England,,that's what insired most of the British guys. All the Stax & Atlantic stars went over there. Plus they were buying our records over there. Howlin Wolf,,Jimmy Reed,,Big Joe Turner,,Ivory Joe Hunter,,Slim Harpo,,Lightning Slim,,Rufus Thomas etc.

  • Trumpets, Saxophones, Harmonicas, and Cowbells, that is what is missing from music today!

  • This is part of American culture now...permenantly.I hear ya Sly ,but yknow that old expression the Lord helps those who help themselves and all that jazz.

  • i love this shit haha i'm high baby i'm high hahahaha

  • Comment removed

  • is it me or does the first couple seconds sound like those fuckin home depot power commercials

  • Boom Locka Locka....yeah

  • I saw the Tedeschi Trucks Band perform this song last night! one of my favorites

  • )') )') kik it ('( ('( boom shak a laka don't you want to get higher sgt MaJor ah come on "Great' if you fall down I'll let you get back up and help you through. Remember I am the weapon....helps to say boom shak a laka!!!

  • う~らからからか う~らからかう~

  • I'm weirdly obsessed with this group.

  • why many songs of Sly and the stone family sounds so familiar?

  • Music SUCKS today! You rock, Sly & the Family Stone!!

  • It doesn't matter how old or young you are, or what style of music you regularly listen to, this song will grab hold of you and make you want to dance. The groove is insane, the bass line is like a funk filled heartbeat, the vocals are just about perfect. Then come the horns, omg the horns force your whole body to start dancing to their rhythmic pattern. I dont' care if you're standing, sitting, or lying down when you hear this song, you will dance. It's impossible not to dance to this song.

  • Would Prince even have a career without this guy leading the way? As much as I love Prince, don't get me wrong.

  • shame music like this hardly gets any of the recognition it deserves anymore

  • @contract17 that's why we've gotta do all we can to keep the classics alive

  • @weluvmusick RIGHT ON!!!

  • Also I might add that is world class Bass playing.

  • Dammit even after all these years I can't sit still when I hear this!!

  • heard the tedeschi trucks band play this last night---it was AMAZING, did a great job with it

  • why not it's sly time ....awesome beat

  • When Jimi Hendrix was asked, "What up and coming new artists do you like?", he replied, "Sly. Yeah, Sly & The Family Stone." You can hear their influence on Jimi's Band of Gypsies album. "Stand" is still one of the best albums of all time. I must have worn out at least two copies back in the day.

  • @Windflier sly ruled the 60s for sure

  • @weluvmusick not better than jimi but almost

  • @fps0chris I disagree Sly & And The Family were an all star band that constantly showcased each individual's unique talents unlike Hendrix who had a band totally built around his guitar skills but forced to produce inferior vocals Jimi Hendrix was a great guitarist but his producers robbed him of the opportunity to really grow as writer and vocalist

  • @weluvmusick idk I love Jimi's vocals in the same way I love Bob Dylans...uniqueness...I prefer a unique voice to a "good" voice any day of the week

  • @fps0chris Yea think Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower is the best of the 3 I've heard Jimi's biggest problems were neither the drugs or his music he just had serious management problems

  • @weluvmusick plus I think R.E.M. was the best overall band that existed but Sly was the best in the 60's as far as I'm concerned

  • @fps0chris Well I have always like a little bit of them all

  • @weluvmusick apples n oranges anyway lol

  • The BLACK PANTHERS forced SLY to dump the white guys in his group. Read it on WIKIPEDIA

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 ~"Read it on WIKEPIDIA"...damn, it must be fuckin' true then!. Wikipedia, the fountain of all truth and knowledge you dummy.

  • @RipCruncher1 It's written other places also. Next you'll be insisting that the BPs weren't at those poling places intimidating voters. Prove to me that they didn't do that with Sly. I love all his music and I think he's a genius and like a lot of geniuses has a hard time fitting in normal situations. I have a very very high IQ and have known for years sometimes I just don't fit.

  • Rather get high than hate.

  • Luv This Song !!!!!

  • Luv It

  • The U.S. Goverment wants to take you higher : "Medical Marijuana Card" :)

  • Ass-kicking song! Great stuff. Ahhhh, Sly, where did you go, Baby???

  • @LegEagle probably publishing and producing performing is not the only to make the money

  • @weluvmusick No you're wrong SLY is a GENIUS that fell of the edge. Sold his music catalogue (all songs) to Michael Jackson & Sony Music.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 OK yea I heard David Bowie did that also hey if I could make money without having to perform I'd do it too

  • @weluvmusick David Bowie ???? He ain't worth the sweat off Sly's U NO WHAT

  • i greww up with this music it was the best

  • @foxymoonbay100 yea me too this is the stuff

  • If ya don't MOVE to this music....yer dead!!! :-D

  • the time when black folk could make good music well actually never mind every race. damn i miss the 60s and 70s even though i was born in the 90s dang nothing tops THIS!

  • Can u imagine the uptight parents when this song came out. They probably went crazy when they heard this.

  • Sly's music was seminal in African-American music history. He took the blues out of the "Down & Out" genre and turned everything into positives. "Take you Higher", "Stand", "It's a Family Affair", "Dance to the Music", and other music themes projecting positive thinking, rather than the "My baby done left me" attitude from previous generations. He developed a theme song of confidence for those times. He was my man.

  • @lamontlewis I disagree,,,it was understandable and mostly DANCEABLE,,,,You good "get down wid it" But he let us down when he screwed up.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 The message mojoman, not the messenger. He was my man with the message. He wasn't any more reliable than any other musician. Successful musicians are likely to let you down. Their music is their legacy, not their lives. Their lives are glamorous but difficult. Being on the road all but a few days a year, eating in different places, sleeping in different beds, and always having a smile for some jerk; it ain't easy. They are destined to succumb to something.

  • @lamontlewis Well,,let's see I wonder why FRANKIE FORD,,FATS DOMINO,,CHUCK BERRY,,BB KING,,JERRY LEE LEWIS,,,Many Country singers,,,Neil Diamond,,,and SO MANY OTHERS,,Just KEEP ON KEEPIN ON. But not him,,,WHY,,,partial insane????

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 In a word, yes! His experience was unique. He was popular long before he was a musician. He started in church, of course. Then he played with other groups, was a DJ in San Francisco, etc. I think he thought he could do no wrong. He was wrong. As for the other musicians you name, They never grew as musicians. What they did at 20, they were still doing 50 years later. I'm a jazz lover. I like seeing musicians grow artistically. Berry never learned another lick after 1958.

  • @lamontlewis You're right but most of them kept on going. With a catalogue like CB has who needs new stuff. Their fans wanta hear the hits that they love them for. I had occasion to talk to Joe Walsh backstage after an Eagles show and asked him if he ever gets tired of playing Rocky Mtn Way,,,He said,,I play it cause the fans love it and most wouldn't know Joe Walsh from Joe Smooh if it wasn't for RMW.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 Jazz is the only music I could tolerate listening to on an unending basis. Popular music's appeal is it's simplicity, and European classics appeal is the exact opposite. I grew up musically multicultural. I tired of the pop music I listened to in my youth a long time ago. It's ok in the car every now and then, but being in a family of musicians and hearing all kinds of music whets your appetite for a buffet rather than a single dinner, if you get my drift.

  • @lamontlewis JAZZ is for people with NO RHYTMN,,,none of them can DANCE.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 All this time I thought I was communicating with an adult. End of conversation. Have a good day.

  • @lamontlewis Thank You,, Keep On Keepin On !!

  • Hilarious house of frightenstein - I am the wolfman, can you dig it?

  • Maaaaaaayn the outright Funk of this song is making my brain melt in to red hot rainbow lava, also known as Jiiiiiiiiiiiive sauce.

  • whenever I hear this song, it reminds me of an All in the Family episode when Archie complains as Gloria is dancing to this....

  • @switcherdawna

I saw that episode a few weeks ago. It was the episode where Edith was on jury duty.

  • The 70's version of the 40's big band music

  • @Defendor1983 WHAT??? That's got to be one of the STUPIDEST comments I've ever read on You Tube.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959

Thanks for the comment slowjo but i was refferring to the multiple instruments that they used in the 40's Read sometime.

  • Comment removed

  • @Defendor1983 You better read what you wrote. 70's version of the 40's big band music ????Glenn Miller Dorseys,,,Lionel Hampton,,Woody Herman,,,,Lenny Dee,,,Louis Jordan,,,???? Name me one that sounds like SLY.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959

Im just referring that there using a lot of instruments like they did in the 40's like a lot of other groups did in the 70's In the 70's there were big groups that played the horns and trumpets etc. Just making a comparison. im done explainning myself move on.

  • @Defendor1983 Gotcha,,sorry I misunderstood. Didn't meant to come off like a smart a&&. You're absolutely right about that.

  • This MUSIC baby!!

  • lol, i still every now and then out of nowhere go "boom shakalaka, boom shakalaka". most people have no idea. and that's a shame.

sly and the family started out with gospel roots, i'm pretty sure this was a gospel idea beautifully transformed into the iconic cultural masterpiece of funktitude it hath become, for generations to enjoy until the end of time.

all hail the gods of funktitude.

  • @tomitstube i feel u on the boom lakakaka boom lol im 23 and my friends have no idea wats going on i was raised on this greatness!!!

  • @GhettoChildTaZ ~ very cool. these guys were ground breaking outrageous fun back in the day. sly and the family brought more people together than any band in the day. great music never dies.

  • @tomitstube Love that boom shakalaka,,boom shakalaka !!! Sometimes I say GREAT GOOGLEY MOO or OOH BOP SHE BOP or OOH POO PA DO. Spaniels,,,Dells,,,,Jessie Hill

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 ~ i got ya, you go back a little further than i do, but keep beltin out those great lyrics!

  • haha .. i love this

  • I came to this video high, I am now higher

  • Oh my god....WOW

I heart couldn't accept that high anymore

i gonna stop this song now

  • I just got higher! : ))))))

  • A testament to this songs greatness and longevity – Prince performed it when I saw him earlier this year!!!

By the end of the song Prince and it seemed like every damn able body in the building were bouncing and singing HIGHER!! I know I was : - )

    a natural high........

  • @Shaolin325 Great song for sure

  • @Shaolin325 oooo!!! Prince is probably the only artist that could pull off a Sly cover!!!! sorry I missed that! :)

  • @Shaolin325

Most highs are natural. Especially ones involving a fungus or herbal incense.

  • boom shaka laka

  • Fantastic texture in this music!

  • @builderbro Right On

  • Miles Davis was right there was simply no one better than this Guy in Rock. He could take one chord and make it a hit with such beautiful arrangements. The rest were pretenders.

  • I skipped my high school prom and went and heard Sly and the gang in Beaumont at Lamar University in 1974. One of the best moves I ever did...

  • @gerry3x I was in WITCHITA,Kan. at a radio station for a job interview,,,I didn't get the job but they were having Sly & the Family Stone for a concert the next night,,So we paid another night in a motel to go see that show. AND SLY DID A "NO SHOW".

  • feel like im at a festival again

  • 5 people need to get their groove on!

  • what album is this

  • @JBoston923 , "Stand" is the name of the album.

  • @takethehighway711 thank you

  • my family used play this song when i was little girl great music in the 70's

  • I've heard more "ripped" musical ideas and hooks from Sly than just about anybody else I can think of in multiple genres. Yeah, I know all musicians swap licks and tricks all the time, its one way music evolves, but its one thing to take something and make it your own, and another to just outright emulate and copy ya'know. Sly and the stone left a legacy, you have to try not to let it move you.

  • @siral000 he was like most of the great ones way ahead of his time

  • The Relentless Magic of Sly and the Family Stone, ya dig?

  • thats what i call funkydelic !

  • STILL WILD!! CLASSIC!! MAKES YOU WANT TO DANCE!!

  • my mom gave this to me for christmas when it came out - my dad heard it and took it away from me.

    hahahahahahhaaaa!!!!!!!

    HIGHER !!!

  • This is some FUNKY SHIT!!!!!

  • who the fuck dislike this song?

  • @geminiscorpio26 i know who :

    Mr. Nosedevoidofunk

  • @geminiscorpio26 8 dipshits,,,Perfect DANCE record. Has it all !!!

  • @geminiscorpio26 justin bieber

  • @geminiscorpio26

    Terrorists

  • thank you joyjoy70301 for you insight !!.. i was commenting that sly and the family were truly outstanding !!.. !!..the talent that guy held just wasnt given a chance because of lots of factors (his hedonistic approach to living confirms this)..but... WHAT A FUCKING TALENT !!

  • I was in Wichita,Kan. for a radio job interview which I didn't get,,, I stayed a day longer and paid another night in a motel because the station was having SLY for a concert the next night. HE DID A "NO SHOW" everyone was pissed, Crowd almost rioted. WILD TIMES. When I got to Winslow,Ariz I got my only TATTOO on my left butt cheek it says WINSLOW,ARIZ 1969 with a picture of a CHOPPER just below it flying OLD GLORY off the back.

  • GOD I LOVE HIS RECORDS especially EVERYDAY PEOPLE why did he have to be such a screw up WE NEED HIM NOW!!

  • Thirty years later, I still remember sitting in the sun, the campus "quad", the lunchtime "radio", someone played some Sly. The leaves turned greener, the sky got bluer and all was right with the world. Now THAT was sunshine.

  • This was the song that forced me to recognise and understand funk.

  • @ sortofsorted are you kidding? Sly is a boss player, the original bad boy! He would get high as bird p***y and rick james had to give him a "just say no" speech! many young bucks look up to him...i.e...will.i.am, snoop, diddy, q-tip, jay z, dave chappelle, even justin timberlake. I ain't knocking you bc I agree, this band was fire! Just do some research boo. Merry Christmas.

  • its a shame this band never got the recognition they truly deserved !!!..a truly gifted combination!!....

  • @sortofsorted YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. SUCCESS FAME ETC ETC THEN BOOM NOTHING!! DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

  • BUM SHAKA LAKA

  • @RoyalCeca no no no tt's BOOM SHAKA LAKA and I love it I miss SLY if we ever needed him and his songs IT'S NOW!!!

  • this is how whites and blacks can come together

  • awsome song..thanks for the upload dude! much appreciated @weluvmusick

  • Can somebody tell me which of these voices is Sly himself? Is it the bass singer, or the tenor one who sings the "I wanna take you higher" part?

  • @TheThing88 He does all the voices ,live any way

  • @TheThing88 He does all the voices ,live any way, except for the woman of coarse

  • @TheThing88 - Sly's the one that leads into and sings the chorus - "I want to, I want to... take you higher" / "Don't ya, don't ya..." / "Take your places, I wanna take you higher"

  • UNBELIEVABLE HARMONICA. DRIVING BASS LINE, GREAT HORNS. SIMPLY AWESOME!!

  • I love being in this funky groove and I am white as a streak of lightning. I have some brothers who have referre
