I just read that Sly has fallen on hard times and is living in an RV in LA...but plans to go into rehab.....I wish him well, and hope we can hear some new music from him soon...because we need some relief from the crap that is being produced currently..
@FMHammyJ He will need THE WHOLE UNIT OR GANG to reproduce anything like they did before. These people all get a big head and think THEY ARE the STAR. The GROUP was always THE STAR. Plus GOOD MANAGEMENT and common sense. There are quite a few of the old rock stars that use their heads,,invest,,spend their money wisely and they just keep plugging along. Sly is a victim of what James Brown said to me once THE CRAB BUCKET SYNDROME.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Oh I agree, the whole was greater than the sum of the parts.....and when I think about it, Sly and the Family Stone was one of the first to have black and white musicians together....another groundbreaker....but I guess thats what "Everyday People" was about....
Anyways, even if he doesnt make anymore music, I hope he gets clean for his own sake.....Hopefully he receives enough in royalties to live comfortably without the pipe.....
@FMHammyJ I was a record promotion man for MGM records for a year and a half between radio jobs and I can tell you there's some weird stuff that goes on. My boss was Ben Scotti (ex Qback for Phila. eagles in the 60's) He was VP of promotions. Anyway from what I understand Michael Jackson and Sony Music own all of Sly's songs. Sony only now I guess. So Sly might've took a cash payout instead of royalties. There's a lot of odd situations in that business. They own The Beatles songs also.
@FMHammyJ Many artists came upon hard times with the British Invasion and sold the rights to their songs just to keep the wolf away from the door. Bo Diddley was one of them. Bo was bitter about that the rest of his life.
Bo was my friend and I will miss him the rest of my life. First Recording Star I ever booked for one of my Teen Dancelands. When Record Hops were all the rage. Wellsville,Ohio 1958. Booked James Brown several times until he got to big and expensive.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Hey man, thanks for the info,....it seems very ironic that a lot of white British artists of the Invasion were simply trying to copy black music, and in doing so, were making life tough for the originators....Bo Diddley played my hometown a few months before he passed....wished I had been able to see him.....
@FMHammyJ Yeah a great compliment to our originators. They also brought many of our R&B acts to the fore. Lennon loved Chuck Berry. I was "in radio" back in those days and I know that when the R&B artists toured England,,that's what insired most of the British guys. All the Stax & Atlantic stars went over there. It doesn't matter how old or young you are, or what style of music you regularly listen to, this song will grab hold of you and make you want to dance. The groove is insane, the bass line is like a funk filled heartbeat, the vocals are just about perfect. Then come the horns, omg the horns force your whole body to start dancing to their rhythmic pattern. I dont' care if you're standing, sitting, or lying down when you hear this song, you will dance. It's impossible not to dance to this song.
When Jimi Hendrix was asked, "What up and coming new artists do you like?", he replied, "Sly. Yeah, Sly & The Family Stone." You can hear their influence on Jimi's Band of Gypsies album. "Stand" is still one of the best albums of all time. I must have worn out at least two copies back in the day.
@fps0chris I disagree Sly & And The Family were an all star band that constantly showcased each individual's unique talents unlike Hendrix who had a band totally built around his guitar skills but forced to produce inferior vocals Jimi Hendrix was a great guitarist but his producers robbed him of the opportunity to really grow as writer and vocalist
@fps0chris Yea think Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower is the best of the 3 I've heard Jimi's biggest problems were neither the drugs or his music he just had serious management problems
@RipCruncher1 It's written other places also. Next you'll be insisting that the BPs weren't at those poling places intimidating voters. Prove to me that they didn't do that with Sly. I love all his music and I think he's a genius and like a lot of geniuses has a hard time fitting in normal situations. I have a very very high IQ and have known for years sometimes I just don't fit.

Being on the road all but a few days a year, eating in different places, sleeping in different beds, and always having a smile for some jerk; it ain't easy. They are destined to succumb to something.
@lamontlewis Well,,let's see I wonder why FRANKIE FORD,,FATS DOMINO,,CHUCK BERRY,,BB KING,,JERRY LEE LEWIS,,,Many Country singers,,,Neil Diamond,,,and SO MANY OTHERS,,Just KEEP ON KEEPIN ON. But not him,,,WHY,,,partial insane????
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 In a word, yes! His experience was unique. He was popular long before he was a musician. He started in church, of course. Then he played with other groups, was a DJ in San Francisco, etc. I think he thought he could do no wrong. He was wrong. As for the other musicians you name, They never grew as musicians. What they did at 20, they were still doing 50 years later. I'm a jazz lover. I like seeing musicians grow artistically. Berry never learned another lick after 1958.
@lamontlewis You're right but most of them kept on going. With a catalogue like CB has who needs new stuff. Their fans wanta hear the hits that they love them for. I had occasion to talk to Joe Walsh backstage after an Eagles show and asked him if he ever gets tired of playing Rocky Mtn Way,,,He said,,I play it cause the fans love it and most wouldn't know Joe Walsh from Joe Smooh if it wasn't for RMW.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Jazz is the only music I could tolerate listening to on an unending basis. Popular music's appeal is it's simplicity, and European classics appeal is the exact opposite. I grew up musically multicultural. I tired of the pop music I listened to in my youth a long time ago. It's ok in the car every now and then, but being in a family of musicians and hearing all kinds of music whets your appetite for a buffet rather than a single dinner, if you get my drift.
@Defendor1983 You better read what you wrote. 70's version of the 40's big band music ????Glenn Miller Dorseys,,,Lionel Hampton,,Woody Herman,,,,Lenny Dee,,,Louis Jordan,,,???? Name me one that sounds like SLY.
Im just referring that there using a lot of instruments like they did in the 40's like a lot of other groups did in the 70's In the 70's there were big groups that played the horns and trumpets etc. Just making a comparison. im done explainning myself move on.
lol, i still every now and then out of nowhere go "boom shakalaka, boom shakalaka". most people have no idea. and that's a shame.
sly and the family started out with gospel roots, i'm pretty sure this was a gospel idea beautifully transformed into the iconic cultural masterpiece of funktitude it hath become, for generations to enjoy until the end of time.
@GhettoChildTaZ ~ very cool. these guys were ground breaking outrageous fun back in the day. sly and the family brought more people together than any band in the day. great music never dies.
@tomitstube Love that boom shakalaka,,boom shakalaka !!! Sometimes I say GREAT GOOGLEY MOO or OOH BOP SHE BOP or OOH POO PA DO. Spaniels,,,Dells,,,,Jessie Hill
Miles Davis was right there was simply no one better than this Guy in Rock. He could take one chord and make it a hit with such beautiful arrangements. The rest of rock and roll were pretenders.

@gerry3x I was in WITCHITA,Kan. at a radio station for a job interview,,,I didn't get the job but they were having Sly & the Family Stone for a concert the next night,,So we paid another night in a motel to go see that show. AND SLY DID A "NO SHOW".
I've heard more "ripped" musical ideas and hooks from Sly than just about anybody else I can think of in multiple genres. Yeah, I know all musicians swap licks and tricks all the time, its one way music evolves, but its one thing to take something and make it your own, and another to just outright emulate and copy ya'know. Sly and the stone left a legacy, you have to try not to let it move you.
thank you joyjoy70301 for you insight !!.. i was commenting that sly and the family were truly outstanding !!.. !!..the talent that guy held just wasnt given a chance because of lots of factors (his hedonistic approach to living confirms this)..but... WHAT A FUCKING TALENT !!
I was in Wichita,Kan. for a radio job interview which I didn't get,,, I stayed a day longer and paid another night in a motel because the station was having SLY for a concert the next night. HE DID A "NO SHOW" everyone was pissed, Crowd almost rioted. WILD TIMES. When I got to Winslow,Ariz I got my only TATTOO on my left butt cheek it says WINSLOW,ARIZ 1969 with a picture of a CHOPPER just below it flying OLD GLORY off the back.
Thirty years later, I still remember sitting in the sun, the campus "quad", the lunchtime "radio", someone played some Sly. The leaves turned greener, the sky got bluer and all was right with the world. Now THAT was sunshine.
@ sortofsorted are you kidding? Sly is a boss player, the original bad boy! He would get high as bird p***y and rick james had to give him a "just say no" speech! many young bucks look up to him...i.e...will.i.am, snoop, diddy, q-tip, jay z, dave chappelle, even justin timberlake. I ain't knocking you bc I agree, this band was fire! Just do some research boo. Merry Christmas.
@TheThing88 - Sly's the one that leads into and sings the chorus - "I want to, I want to... take you higher" / "Don't ya, don't ya..." / "Take your places, I wanna take you higher"
I love being in this funky groove and I am white as a streak of lightning. I have some brothers who have referred to me as their blue eyed soul brother and that might have to do with my ability to get down with the tenor sax or the bass or just plain singing from the deep place within just like S&TFS do. Boom! Shocka!

@THEMOJOMANsince1959
Im just referring that there using a lot of instruments like they did in the 40's like a lot of other groups did in the 70's In the 70's there were big groups that played the horns and trumpets etc. Just making a comparison. im done explainning myself move on.

lol, i still every now and then out of nowhere go "boom shakalaka, boom shakalaka". most people have no idea. and that's a shame.
sly and the family started out with gospel roots, i'm pretty sure this was a gospel idea beautifully transformed into the iconic cultural masterpiece of funktitude it hath become, for generations to enjoy until the end of time.
all hail the gods of funktitude.

Miles Davis was right there was simply no one better than this Guy in Rock. He could take one chord and make it a hit with such beautiful arrangements. The rest of rock and roll were pretenders.

I skipped my high school prom and went and heard Sly and the gang in Beaumont at Lamar University in 1974. One of the best moves I ever did...

This was the song that forced me to recognise and understand funk.
teddingtontcu 1 year ago 2
@ sortofsorted are you kidding? Sly is a boss player, the original bad boy! He would get high as bird p***y and rick james had to give him a "just say no" speech! many young bucks look up to him...i.e...will.i.am, snoop, diddy, q-tip, jay z, dave chappelle, even justin timberlake. I ain't knocking you bc I agree, this band was fire! Just do some research boo. Merry Christmas.

its a shame this band never got the recognition they truly deserved !!!..a truly gifted combination!!....

Can somebody tell me which of these voices is Sly himself? Is it the bass singer, or the tenor one who sings the "I wanna take you higher" part?

@TheThing88 He does all the voices ,live any way, except for the woman of coarse
larryoloai 1 year ago
@TheThing88 - Sly's the one that leads into and sings the chorus - "I want to, I want to... take you higher" / "Don't ya, don't ya..." / "Take your places, I wanna take you higher"

I love being in this funky groove and I am white as a streak of lightning. I have some brothers who have referred to me as their blue eyed soul brother and that might have to do with my ability to get down with the tenor sax or the bass or just plain singing from the deep place within just like S&TFS do. Boom! Shocka!
