You guys saying he overplayed it need to chill. He's not playing it for the purpose of furthering the song or making it better, just using it as a template for some really sweet linear fills. Thumbs way up Tbartels.
I know its probably fine for you, but the angle of your toms look so awkward to hit at speed, especially the transition between the floor tom to one of the mid ones. But if it works for you then great!
I guess the overplayed quality is obvious but you really showed where to throw in those fills. More of an instructional vid than an actual tasteful (not technical for the sake of it) cover imo. Those fills are pretty bad ass though :D
you know having the drums tilted the like gives them a different less full sound, and it is an easy way to go throught heads faster. i dont know if any one knows that
Your fills don't catch on sync with the beat everytime but I loved the cover regardless, i've only been playing for 4 years, you've been playing for 30. So don't take my advice by any means, keep em coming bud :]
okay dude your drum fills are epic....groove..okay. But if you look and listen to the video carefully, in 2:00-2:35, you were over showering the acutal MUSIC with drum fills that weren't even called for. then at 2:57-3:35, you're doin it again, while also losin time in the process. music is to be played with emotion and feeling. your showin emotion, but over showering everything else with u necessary stuff. If you were in a band...dude they would fire you. Play the music, dont just show off.....
@MrDrumfanatic101 I agree, I think the fills are amazing but not called for, at least not in this song. To me it doesn't need that many "noise", also silences, and spaces are necessary in music, you don't have to fill every single beat. I find the fills sometimes come to often, tempo-wise. I like what he did with the drums and love to hear more in a song that, to me, really calls for them.
love it man. nice to see u branching out and trying new things, thats the only way to improve. If u get a chance, I would love to see some Mudvayne and Soundgarden covers, I think your style would do them justice
tbartels is a drumming GOD! that crossover thing around 2:13 was EPIC. love your covers :D if this was the norm drumming for Usher songs, i would listen to Usher a lot more >_>
Nice drum covers, you are always very clean with the beats and am always on time. Btw i see that you hold your drum sticks with your wrists facing each other rather than them facing the ground (which i prefer to do) personally do you find any pros or cons in holding them like that or is it just how you were taught?
@sk8terboy1244 You do know he has other videos on his channel. And you do know that he has(in my opinion) the best cover of Ticks and Leeches by Tool and you probably don't know that Ticks and Leeches was named the best drumming track of any rock song... Just to let you know...
@sk8terboy1244 There are many things wrong with your comment... First, "themost" and a verb that ends in "est" is extremely redundant. Second what does homosexuality have anything to do with this video? Third, what's wrong with Usher? Fourth, if you can't expand and reach out to unknown territories you are not a musician. Fifth, there is no real or fake drumming. Sixth If you don't try something new you will be stuck in the same spot for ever. Fuck you... Nice job on the song by the way!!!!
I love that you can play such complex fills in a genre that isnt made for it, and still make it sound fantastic. I may start playing Hip Hop songs just for fun to see what I can come up with haha.
Love your drumming mate. Couldn't agree more about Mike's Linear Pattern book, pure gold.
Hope to see more of your linear patterns. Your skill has really inspired my own drumming, infact just started Aenema and was just working out a part with your help when i discovered this cherry. Cheers.
@Dragonfreak2008 First of all, this is just my opinion so just take it for what it's worth. I think that a truly great musician should never limit his talents. This seems like a good song to practice the new fills.
Hey, if you're looking for song that are like "blank canvases" check out the song "Sober" by Tool. It's got a nice groove and has lots of room for some good fills. Plus it's by Tool!
@laxdude142 The fills are improv. If I tried to plan them I'd forget the order or whatever & it would be a mess. I just tried to take elements from the book & put them in as much as possible. It's tough to play patterns from a book over and over & then not play the exact pattern when it's time for a fill. The patterns are tough, but not overly so. It's implementing portions of them smoothly that takes practice. e.g. the fill at 2:31 is straight from the book & it's one of the lamest I played.
@GrZel7 Just to say he is an amazing drummer, he is trying something new (went from LoG to this shit) and i think he did very well and that drumming is very intricate and groovy. I couldnt disagree with u more! Btw i just looked on your channel and he is 50 times the drummer you will ever be!
Hey man, I'm really glad to see you pushing yourself in new directions, that's the mark of a great musician- always pushing themselves to broaden their repertoire and technique. Good work dude. I look up to you as far as drumming in a lot of ways. I can tell you're experimenting with some new fills, and, like you say, some work and some don't. The most important thing is that you're trying. Rock on, man!
Great job again T...! you really demonstrate your impartialness for music genre, while at the same time displaying your ability to play drums well and for any musical piece. Hat's off to you my friend - you rock!
@decdlayhow Don't get me wrong, the performance is good, but sometimes it kinda takes away from the actual song, if this was labelled as a warm up or something I can understand the insane amount of fills, but I'm all about simplicity and less is more.
But you are 100% right, personal preference after all, just my opinion.
When you say for the difficulty that it is whatever you want from zero to infinity... from 1-5 (like normal) what would u put as the difficulty for the way you played it?
Man people, he said he wanted to practice fills. So maybe let up on the "theres so many fills!" Anyway, nice cover man! And the fill heavy drumming reminds me of Brann Dailor of Mastodon, would love to see you do some covers of that!
Man, don't take it in a bad way... but you need to "practice" your feeling, your awareness in the notes, the simple ones... you have a nice technic, you have enough ability to do it so, but you got to keep the hi-hat closed most of the time, for example... I really like this one, but Vicarous was a killing one!
I took marching band for 2 years, I played the snare, and now Ive been playing the drum kit nearly 8 years now. What practices do you recommend for accuracy, speed, and technicallity? I've kinda hit a bit of a speedbump and feel that i'm playing the same thing over again. Do you ever get that?
@aSprinkler 1. I try to play new moves/exercises/patterns slowly & without music. Then gradually work on them faster & faster. Lastly, I try to play them in a song setting. Identify some patterns that you don't know how to play & work them in this manner. 2. Every musician suffers from your malaise. The key is to be honest about your weaknesses & work to improve them. Find new musical styles & exercises to revitalize your enthusiasm. It's a constant challenge. Check Mike Johnston on YT 4 ideas
