You are correct. The slides do not hold open after last round fired on the 1908 vest pockets or the 1903 and 1908 hammerless models. The hold open is only there to set manually for cleaning purposes. Had a round jam or sometimes if the safety lever is so wore out it'll move up on it's own and hold the slide open once and a while.
I have a gun that looks exactly like that which has two dates on it. On is 1898 and the other is 1903. Its worth about $400.00. It shoots good but unlike your gun the slide doesn't stay back when all the ammo is shot. I believe I have an earlier version of your weapon.
My grandmother had it for 62 years. She passed away in 1985. I can account for 88 years of its existence. It was bought by my grandmother second hand. Not sure how old it was when she got it.
