This shifter is for an S197 Mustang Automatic ('05-'09+). The transmission is a 5-speed, but is actually a 4-speed with OD. So D handles both 4th and 5th gear. So really you can only shift through the direct available 1, 2, and 3, gears, then you have to go into D for 4th and 5th. TCI makes loads of automatic shifters for other transmission models.
think of this as a normal ratchet shifter you would find on a race car. it has to go all the way forward to shift into second then all the way forward again for 3rd and again for drive so no missed gears. And from first to drive you need to rachet through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to drive, and no side button, you now use the lever infront of T. The T handle can even be replaced with something else if you do not like it.

Might be a stupid question but can you leave the shifter in drive and just cruise or do you have to shift it every time now?

Also the O/D button is no longer on the shifter handle. It's right above the P.

I forgot to ask, do you have to push on the side button to go from first to drive?

It shifts alot easier than I thought it would from 1st to drive. Is it easy to miss a gear?

....
It's a ratchet shifter, so no, you can't miss a gear. That's the point of a ratchet shifter.
