damn, i was thinking about transferring to FSU and I was hoping their band would be traditional not DCI. i just have more fun playing in a traditional band
im a junior in highschool right now and have been playing tenors for about a year and a half and am set on going to fsu and playing on the drumline. will it be a problem that i have only played on quints and never the sixth drum? also any pointers to practice for this drumline?? please help me out :)
If you can get around the four main drums, doesn't much matter about the spock drums...5 or 6. Play clean and get good at reading so you can keep up. Also don't get offended if you wind up on bass the first year in college, either. they may have a lot of returning upper classmen with tenor experience. Just be a team player and play whatever you're on well and you'll get some respect and a shot at moving up when it's time. Good luck!
why not? lol, yes it is. they use them in cadences and in songs sometimes. in the cadences it gives the latin feel that it is there for. if there is another reason than that, some other person can tell you.
@uclabruinsgo1 florida state always marches with cowbells on their tenors. why i believe they use it in one of their cadences. im not sure which but im pretty positive about that
@jaybax7 The reason for the cowbells is quite simple. Prior to, I believe, the 1996 season, Big 8 also had a latin section on the field with them. Consisting of timbales and dual bongos that had cowbells attached. As this was a main stay with Big 8 for so long, the cowbells are used in a great deal of their cadences (especially Sequence). I'm surprised that nobody else has pointed this out yet. I keep forgetting how long ago my first year with the Chiefs was, going back to 1993.
No one on the line has or should actively give out music for the cadences. The exercises, however, are pretty stock and should be easy enough to figure out/google.

Yikes, I expected much better from the "great" Big 8 drumline. Well, maybe I shouldn't. It will never be the same as it was in the late 90's with Marcus Martin.
Dude I won't deny that the Big 8 from the late 90s is arguably one of the most influential Big 8 lines, largely due to the fact of their self released "Slam Sessions" cd... but the 03 line definitely had more chops, and a much cleaner snare line. Seriously, listen to the dirt on slam sessions... and I'm not knocking it, I love every second of that cd, mostly cause I got a complimentary shovel with it.
Do any of you big eight drummers know JESSE CAMPBELL. He was the old big eight section leader now he is the drumline instructor at our highschool. Go TATE!!! FSU tenor matting call eeeeeaaaaaa.
im a big seminoles fan and what makes me like about the drumline is when they play songs on tha drums like they did in the movie "drumline". do they play songs on there drums or they just do the traditional style.
I don't know that they "battle" like they do in drumline, but if you sit in or around the student section during a game, the d-line plays to the section. Its so much fun!
the movie drumline has nothing to compare to the extreme attention to detail executed in Big 8. That movie was show style bands, however big 8 has it's own unique style of in your face flare, but you have to put out for them to show you!

some cadences call for it... just a different noise that can add to it.
besides, EVERYTHING IS BETTER WITH COWBELL
blackdragon2875 2 years ago
If it is a cowbell then that member probably had to play it during the halftime show and others had parts to play
