Since he had the Colossi, it's also possible that CombatEX knew he'd be using a large number of Colossi and that the path he'd attempted to put the Nexus on was the one he would be marching down. If the (expected future) attack wasn't stopped at that point (the Nexus) he would have crowd control in the form of his Nexus limiting the number of Zerg units that could attack at once AND increase the effectiveness of his upgraded Colossi.

Not to mention he could just walk up the ledge from there.

Although I don't purport to know what CombatEx was thinking at the time, it would seem that building the Nexus accomplishes two things for him around the 12:45 mark.

Firstly, if it completes it is a durable scout and if Destiny were to 'A' move his units around it they would split themselves up as half the force decided to attack the Nexus while the other half arrived at the (expected future) battle.

Secondly, the time that Destiny has to put it to kill it if it completes.. 'farms-in-WC3' like
