My family's land got taken by eminent domain to build Sam Rayburn Reservoir here in East Texas. At the time, granddad didn't like it, but looking back, he thinks it's the best economic value he could have got out of the land.

Sometimes we gotta suck it up and plan ahead. I know it's tough, but both sides of the issue need to be looked at. There will be a crisis in the future, and there's only so wide you can make I-10 in the Katy area.

A close friend of mine got his land taken by eminent domain with the offer of a mere $800K. He went to court against the State and won $2.3MM because that is what the land was actually worth. He is now selling the surrounding land to developers for $6MM. As long as long as these farmers know how much their land is actually worth and don't let the gov't try to rip them off.
