  • YAY !! Dude you a good teacher. So far I made a wine glass like yours then a Table lamp, then a Vase all just from watching this one lesson. congrats for being able to teach a rather slow learner like me. I Build in Second Life and this is going to be a wonderful tool for makin my own scupts. Thanks a Bazillion.

  • i have an atomic mushroom cloud

  • My drawing turned into a buttplug x)

  • Lathe - A machine tool which rotates the work piece on it's axis to perform various operations, such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis or rotation. Used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, and glass-working. Lathe's can be used to shape pottery, the best known design being the potters wheel. - That was what wikipedia said.

  • 422 likes 0 dislikes :D thanks men

  • After 13 tutorials I´m sure to be able to work mouch more professional than with ms paint now. Maybe someday I´m gonna earn money with that. thanks!

  • a lathe is for wood not clay

  • hacks on the cup

  • How do you make a thin line into a cilinder kind of line? I've tried a lathe and extrude and a bunch of other modifiers, but I just can't find it. Which one is it?

  • I'm trying to make a full 90 minute movie adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus next year and I'm praying I'll get the hang of all this!

  • How do you know what kind of line to draw ? say if I wanted to make a table or glass or dinner plate or something, how do I know what kind of line to draw ?

  • swine flu? :)

  • lol i draw a dick there, and after lathing that, it became a beautiful F1 tyre

  • Lathe: watch?v=lcGHtI9Lql4

  • you can use a lathe to carve wood into circles

  • Great tutorials man!

  • Thanks good one, Im new to 3ds max.

  • I tried to make the cup, but i got a plate somehow. At least it's still dinnerware.

  • @AkoolStick Good effort either way Ron, you can try again next Transfiguration class.

  • thanks man, this help everyone :)

  • A lathe is what you clamp a piece of wood or metal to spin it into a baseball bat or any other tube-like object...ps..your prononciation is correct too...

  • a lathe can be referred to as a pottery wheel as well just looked it up on wikipedia.

  • and btw how do i know what im going to get after i lathe? like u did.

  • omg when i clicked LATHE a got a NUKE :D

  • thanks for the lessons there clearer than 3ds max tutorials anyway ive posted this question on the forum. Basically when making the shape for the glass it kinda of goes wrong when i`m closing the spline it does not finish straight line it goes off and pointy or curvy what am i doing wrong when closing the spline ive tried everything thanks again great lessons.

  • yeah!! i made my first 3d middle finger!! :D

  • @thenewboston a lathe is the thingy that has a clamp on one end for metal stuff to be shaped on, you are talking about a pottery wheel XD

  • Effin LOVELY! This just answered answered a question I had on the previous video. Thought I was gonna have to wait around for a reply haha!

  • is there anyway to modify the edges of an extruded design made with the line tool to make the edges rounded or like how you can make the edges with the bevel modifier?

  • i dont understand how that shape turned into a glass... i had a circle and a star and it turned into some weird ass shape...

  • 0:50 okay whos under the desk

  • Lathe : A machine for shaping a piece of material, such as wood or metal, by rotating it rapidly along its axis while pressing a fixed cutting or abrading tool against it.

  • @1298800 Yes... we know what a lathe is. Who are you talking to?

  • you can also press F4 to view line segments in the viewport

  • Now the 'bendy straw' came in handy.

  • I used to lathe to make a shitty wine glass YAY!

  • Ok guys... How many of you are watching thesetutorials mainly to try to make a game?

  • @Olemassacre 3DS max is mainly used for games, Maya is used for movies but is less simpler but ,from what i heard, s better at animating than 3DS max

  • @Olemassacre Im watching it to for making material for a documentary

  • @Olemassacre im in !

  • @Olemassacre I know 3dmax but i'm just going through it again cause this guy explains it so well :) and never hurts to learn from scratch :)

  • @huskydadu Got a point there ;)

  • @Olemassacre kinda starting game design course next year

  • @Olemassacre how many replies did u get? haha

  • @SleepBoySleeps A bit. :)

  • @Olemassacre actually, im hoping to go to college and major in animation and game design

  • @azimoto9 Nice plan. I have/had the same plan too.

  • @Olemassacre haha im doing a mod lol!

  • @dfghj241 To which game and which console? Do you know how to code it?

  • @Olemassacre doing a mod for medieval 2 total war, for pc, actually im only doing the models for it, and i dont know how to code it, even though i could learn, since there is so much information on the total war forums about how to mod ^^

  • @Olemassacre i am :D

  • @Olemassacre Learning how to create models for Cry Engine 3 SDK...

A lot of shit to learn I gotta say.

  • @Olemassacre Yeah pretty much with UDK.

  • @Olemassacre dude beginners have to start from somewhere ...

  • @Olemassacre i make a game :))

  • @danidenis2010 How do you plan to process the 3D modules?

  • A lathe is used to machine metal, or cut wood in a cylindrical shape. If you wanted to make your own stair spindles, or something of that nature, you'd used one.

  • I thank you so much. You have saved me too. XD

I have to model a gun and obligatory use extrude and lathe, so thank you very much again.

  • 3:15 BOOM! LOW POLY CUP FOR A GAME hahaha

  • dude ive been using blender for a year! now that i found being a student i can get 3ds max for free ive been following all your tutorials, in this tutorial alone if it were to be in blender i would take a while, i drew out a gun shape then extruded it and bam low poly gun :)

  • "oh yeah~ just like that" hahaha

  • Lol, nice tool!

  • Thank a lot , mate !!!! i just begin and i guess u are my great teacherrrrrr

  • will we be able to learn how to make scenes?

  • Hey, I just wanted to say "THANK YOU!" I recently starting messing around with 3DS in my off time to learn something new and your videos are very informative! I'm going to subscribe... keep em coming!

  • thanks man!

  • i dont have extrude in my modifier set are you using 2010 if yes then how can i get it please and thank you and your the shit dude

  • Why is this educational and entertaining as well ? :D

  • WOW i can't find LATHE :(

  • say i have a 2D sketch of some tunnels imported as a shape, converted and added extrude. is there a way of rounding out the shapes into more of tubes instead of squared off ones. or instead of extrude use a bevel

    Thanks a bunch

  • say i have a 2D sketch of some tunnels imported as a shape, converted and added extrude. is there a way of rounding out the shapes into more of tubes instead of squared off ones.

    Thanks a bunch

  • U just teach me everything I needed for my project, Im so grateful with you...and, hmmm maybe, well, when u look for a modifier u can type the first letters so it will take u easier to the name ur looking for

    Thnx Again!

    :)

  • thank you

  • Er, I tried making a similar shape to the glass and using lathe on it, but all it did was make it this weird lamp looking thing (like the "center" option you have) but it did it for all three options... What did I do wrong?

  • @Feltorn try rotating your original spline before adding the lathe mod.

  • question... is there any easy way of cleaning caps (top/bottom faces) after extruding? it creates wierd polygons when extruding complex spline shapes so i have to place editpoly mod on top, then manually clean those lines... if i dont do that, and simply place turbosmooth on top it scre*s up my model...

  • ...or swine flu

  • Thanx for sharing man !

I'm also at university and I've work on maya, xsi and also max...

Dunno why but it always sound complicated from the beginning with the teachers I've got.

With you, it seems like it a cup of tea with a straw ! XD

  • I missed the BAM !

  • hey help me please:D....when i try to select something (dragging the mouse) appears a circle around my cursor and doesn`t let me select it ,only if i click on the object.....i know that`s crazy but its really annoying :((...BTW..you`re the best teacher

  • if you're talking about the gizmo hiding press X

  • haha my lathed spline made a perfect buttplug.

  • Thanks a lot! This is so much better than all the 3ds Max tutorials I can find on the web! :)

  • Now I can make a cup for my straw.

  • And bam loook addat!

  • woow I just watched like an hour and a half watching these tutorials after each other... This keeps me kinda busy in a fun way ! I appreciate it allot ! Today I was just a beginner but now I know almost al the basics i think? keep it going !!

    BAMMMMM!!!

  • For pottery the term is Potter's wheel.

  • best teacher ever

  • I'm a little unclear about the purpose of turning 2D shapes into 3D shapes.

Would these be used as an alternative way to make more complex objects like the glass made the end, as opposed to editing 3D shapes like a box or a sphere?

  • I clicked "lathe" and I ended up with a perfect lamp. :)

  • THANK YOU!!! YOUR THE BEST!!!

  • Hi.. i can't create a candy cane with this metod.. someone can? Help me pls. :)

  • @VendectaSplitter A candycane isn't symmetrical from a vertical line. To make 3D objects using lathe, you have to draw a shape, and that is going to be copied symmetrically over a vertical line, then 'spun' into a shape.

  • D: i accidentally clicked dislike! now there's 2 dislikes, i remember theres only supposed to b one dislike, but they prob did the same as me lol.

  • Make tutorial about hair and fur.

    :\

    I suck at that.

  • Incidentally, that "thing that spins it around" is a pottery wheel, but I don't think it is applicable to the lathe. A wood lathe turns a block of wood around a common axis for making spindles, or cylindrical carvings. Point taken though, man, well done.

  • You must be our techie guardian angel. Thank you SO much. You deserve a medal.

  • Its a pottery wheel.

  • so why does my shape just vanish when i hit extrude?

  • @gmanmode change the amount its under parameters on the right

  • lathing machine- turno..yes that is it

  • This one actually made me a real 3d object of my own!! THANKS SO MUCH.

1 Question though, your's is nice and greeen and clear to see but mine, it's all black but the colour is also green, and no matter which colour I change to it is really heavily in shadows. And clicking "render" makes this really weird kinda thing, nothing like the object shown! I bet you answer this question in 14-22 but I thought it's best to ask now.

  • You're a lifesaver!!!

  • i thought it was just a potting wheel :)

  • thats amazing how you made a glass from that spline... wow

  • LOVE ALL UR TUTS!

use the program for Secondlife and god it makes thing soo easy!!... if i could only get the hang of hte mappin to color it in photoshop... cant seem to get the hang of it

p.s a lathe is wht they use to turn a tube into an object. like a log into a baseball bat, its spins an object and the shaves from the outisde point inwoards to shape it

  • thanks!

  • lol why the eff?

  • lathe is a device used for cutting metal, wood etc . it spins the object at a high speed and basically uses a chisel like blade to cut the item to your requirements. that's how the pond (chess set) was made from a cylindrical block .

  • wow great! thanks man

  • :08 is where the fun starts. Whooping cough FTW!

  • It' really a lathe.

  • In pottery it's a potter's wheel, but the premise is the same. You use tools and hands to cut and form the shape.

  • nice video, good tutorial, really helpfull, thanks!!!

  • I don't know why, and I am probably dum, but after making that wineglass I can't rotate it in any other way than along the Z dimension!

  • I want the object like 1:38 but I want the face to be gridded so I can change it... How do i do this?

  • Wood lathes are used to make perfectly symmetrical objects that are round, like bats or table legs

  • Lathe is the same as revolve in autodesk inventor... Lathing 2D objects...

  • A lathe is a mahine that they use in machining metal.... A lathe has a chuck which holds the piece your machining. This piece spins at high to low RPM and you machine it to whatever your doing... thats probably where hey got the lathe from... Its spinning action

  • thenewboston:

you crack me up AND you are a great tutor!

  • Agt00, Spot on description of a lathe....

And, I, uhhhh supppppose,,,,,, you could consider

the wheel that potters use maybe a verticle lathe???

But I believe they just call it a pottery wheel ;)

LOL I almost forgot....... Great videos

  • You obviously know your subject. Great 3Ds tutorial. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks a lot man!!!

    you are one good teacher!!!!

a life saver....didnt attend much classes at the university ..on 3ds max, coz the teacher sux!

so basically i studied 3ds max from u!

    thnks again!!

  • @agt00meeturmaker00 what u said was truly RIGHT! haha xD

  • @agt00meeturmaker00 wait you can take classes

  • @agt00meeturmaker00 teacher sux? wow, I've never had a teacher for neither photoshop nor 3DS, so I guess You're the lucky one here.

  • @agt00meeturmaker00 Same here man, same here! :)

  • Lathes can be used to shape pottery, the best-known design being the potter's wheel. Most suitably equipped metalworking lathes can also be used to produce most solids of revolution, plane surfaces and screw threads or helices. Ornamental lathes can produce three-dimensional solids of incredible complexity. The material can be held in place by either one or two centers, at least one of which can be moved horizontally to accommodate varying material lengths.

  • A lathe is a mechanical machine tool which spins a block of material to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation.

Lathes are used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, and glassworking.

  • Lave or Leve (whatever, i cant spell) lol is a type of wood turning equipment... used for making things like banisters and chair legs :) lol

  • lathe

  • Awesome, this is a great way to put stuff you draw into 3d! Just scan your drawing and import it into 3ds max and freeze it, then trace it and extrude, and just carve it out from there.

  • thanks. that even helped me out more

  • hey great video......bt it wud have been really helpful if u could also show hw exactly a 2d shape that has been made out of different splines (the one u used to make the glass was only 1 spline) can be made into a 3d.

  • lov ,you

  • Damn. I even tried to make the same exact shape he did and it still came out looking nothing like it. lol

  • Dawg... that glass wuz vicious at tha end.... wuznt expecting that wats so ever, not at all... so unexpected... wow

  • that glass at the end was unexpected, it's like magic, lol

  • A lathe is used for wood and metal to cut it as it spins, Im not sure if pottery is the same name. Wouldnt be suprised though

  • yes, some clay pottery r also made by this methode. the only differnce is for clay pottery, if u mess it up u can allways redo it but for wood and metal lathe, oncee u mess up its good for nothing. otherthan that both kinda same technique.

  • @stekizineach I believe it it called a pottery wheel. I may be wrong though.

  • @stekizineach its just called a wheel, you throw pottery on a wheel. thats the technical term

  • @stekizineach Lol, as you said, a lathe is used to carve wood and metal as it spins, But for pottery, It is called a pottery wheel, very similar though:)

  • @stekizineach In pottery its called a pottery wheel... but its probably the oldest form of a lathe.

  • oh, yeah, just like that!!!

  • when you extrude a spline its hallow in the inside, how can i make it a solid???

  • NIce tutorial!

    5/5

*Yikes, I just saw you left click in the end at the recorder, are you hiding something? XD*

  • These coughs were more comical, rather than the previous loud ones in previous videos.

  • thanks! for givings us ideas to use 2d max....you are really great person! God bless you always!

  • Arghhh! I actually stayed up late to watch this and now need the next vid!!

    Great vids, 5/5 :)

  • hey when will you do another contest

  • in 3ds max 2009 isnt any modifier called lace can anyone help me???

  • Nope a lathe is used in woodwork to be able to turn and shape the wood with a chisel,

your thinking of a pottery wheel :P

And good tutorials keep up the good work :)

  • It's also used for metal working, for nice round objects.

A pottery wheel follows the same concept.

  • n62, Thats a little messed up :-\
