I'm 27. I'm a college student in the midst of a career change in an attempt to increase my income. I never thought that I was entitled to retire at any particular age, be it now like some lucky few, or 65, or whenever. I always believed that if I wanted to *ever* retire, that it relies solely on my shoulders as to the decisions I make and preparations I do in order to be able to live a retired lifestyle. If I have to keep working because I didn't set anything else up, so be it.

Some foreign cars seem to be a better value to some Americans than domestically produced cars. I love domestically produced SUVs, but some Americans value the cheaper, more fuel efficient imports. I'm not sure it's fair to say that US consumers should buy cars they value less to increase the value of a US job. I know I'm not going to tell my struggling neighbors that they should buy a car they don't want so that someone else can have a well paying job.

This is perfectly reasonable. Retirement as we know it is a demographic accident of history. Age was set 65 when life expectancy was much lower and there were alot more young workers to sustain the retirees. Work back then was also more labor intensive which made it harder for old people to do it. Today people are more healthy and vibrant than those days and there are also less demanding jobs. Some people can retire if they save for it but it should not be considered a right.

Perhaps there is an argument for some socialized re-distribution program and pensions are nice too, but at this stage in my life I just accept paying into social welfare programs as a cost of making income, and would consider it foolish for me to believe that I'll see any significant return. As for pensions, if they're in contracts great, if not, I'd set some money aside.

The unions have bled GM so much that it is only now that they realized if they have kept it up, they would have been out of a job. If you want to retire a pension, join the military or get a government job. Not many private jobs offer pensions in the first place so if you get one, you should be happy with what you got.

I'm generally a liberal, but I agree with a lot of what Rush said. People are living longer thanks to advances in science and health care. The dynamics of working, Social Security, and Medicare need a total overhaul.

I'd raise the Medicare eligibility from 65 to 67. That would save $513 billion in 20 years. Social Security will go bankrupt if we don't fix it, and a slow move towards full benefits at 70 would save SS $2.9 trillion by 2029.

Clearly, for example, my 86 year old grandfather has no business working anymore. And he certainly shouldn't be running a business with my uncle anymore.
