@ncranfill petrol engines are from about 900 euros for a Radne with reduction drive (see radne website - Raket 120 aero es-rd) after that you need a suitable harness, some aluminium seamless tube, some fittings, vibration mounts, support wires and wheels/skid. Balance is important. Hope this helps, Pete
@MegaJakse Most power units use the Radne raket 120 engine, this used a ROS125 paramotor engine. New engines are expensive, for a hang glider you could use most kart engines from 14HP up to 20HP as long as you can make a reduction drive and it isn't too heavy. Hope this helps. Pete
@flytepark most power units have a mouth throttle for takeoff and then a hand operated thorttle for cruising at a set power. This unit only had a hand throttle with an electrical kill switch to abort takeoff. You can see me dial in full power at 0:56 Pete
Im going to make one of these someday, once i get a hang glider and some kind of engine and prop. My parents dont believe i can do it though lol. We'll see about that..

how in the world can 16 people dislike this video ? I can't think of any reason at all except that they are probably hard core bible bangers that believe man should not fly. f'n tards.
wow. I think that video gave me an erection (no homo) . That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. wow. great song choice BTW. How in the hell does a person get started in something like this ? Also, I was very surprised to see you fly above water. I'm sure the manual advises against this. way cool man. Thanks for sharing.
@yynnmmbb thaks for the comments, glad you liked it. Most people learn to fly a hang glider off a hill or by winching into the air, then add power when experienced. Flight above water is safe as long as you can easily glide back to a safe landing. Pete
whats a good place to buy hangliders in the UK and is it possible to make a composite bay to hold fuel & engine+undercarrige then strap it to the harness- basically how much for everything needed for safe flight.
@FlyHighRC386 skyads dot co dot uk. You can make anything if you have the skills and knowledge, thrustline is important. The Booster is a composite unit, try soarfoot dot com. You'll need the C-of-G as close to free flight as possible for better handling in the air- this unit didn't handle as well as conventional units like the Mosquito. Keep me informed if you make something.
@FlyHighRC386 Funny thing we were flying over Church Bay area this weekend. Generally people learn to hang glide from a hill or a winch first, then add power when they are competent at flying and landing. try Skyads dot co dot uk to get an idea of used prices. Pete
@TheDevilpunk17 Wings are fairly expensive new, but they last a long time (15 years+). In the UK we use SkyAds dot co dot uk to buy and sell used gear. This unit had a wooden 125cm prop. Thanks for the interest, Pete

This one cost about £1100, I was lucky and got my other unit for £550. In the UK we buy&sell on skyads. New units are £3000+ Google 'flphg manufacturers' and go to the winddrifter site for a link to all manufacturers' websites. Pete
Only the power unit is homebuilt, the wing is an American glider- a Wills Wing Eagle, great glider for power and free flying (jumping off a hill etc). Thanks for the comments, Pete
Thanks for the comments. Sorry I don't have enough photos to make a how to video, also I'd be worried about liability if anyone should hurt themselves after following my design. Pete
Thanks Wes! I don't use limit lines on my Mosquito based unit. This unit had to have them due to the weight being so far rear- the handling was pretty poor really. Pete
DUDE YOU OWN, u truly inspired me, I'ma try building one of these for my school project! thanks man, I would appreciate if u got any tips for me? =) and btw NICE UPLOAD!!
The Centre of Gravity is very important, the engine in this unit is too far rear for good handling, it should fly as near as possible like a standard hang glider does. Good luck, keep me posted. Pete
The engine is a ROS125 (see marcmotor website) and the frame was made from 32mm Dia,1.6mm wall thickness aluminium alloy seamless tubing held with clamps, no welding. Pete
Sorry for the late reply. It'll cost you time and not a great deal of money, the main cost is the engine, then the tubing, clamps, wires etc. Let me know if you build one. This one has been dismantled as the handling is poor with the engine so far to the rear. Pete
I bought a motor partners 125 and I would like to challenge costruir a structure I have the aluminum 7077 but no measures you can give me the measures I flight delta wing at 15 years here in Brazil do not have anybody which can help me so you could help me
It cost me £1250 to make it, this included money clawed back through selling the paramotor the engine came from etc. Good fun project, but it's been dismantled and the engine returned to it's former home in the paramotor. I still use the harness in my other unit.
Yeh, you can easily fly above clouds, I've had a flew amazing flights between cloud layers or climbing thorugh blue holes into the clear blue sky above. A bloke in Wales flew to over 15000ft using a powered hang glider, search for Bontgoch and the video is called 15316ft. Pete
It's not awful, but it is noticeably worse handling than a Mosquito unit. The position of the bottom bar is further rear, have a look at the hangstrap, it is no longer vertical due to the offset of the engine weight. It's now been dismantled and the engine returned to it's original home in a paramotor. Pete
Probably will be up for it, depends on the date. I've only got a Mosquito at the moment, performance upgrades are coming over winter though, watch this space... PS Are you the Clive selling the Garmin 76C?
In the video at 0:50 you can see I takeoff with a 5litre tank that is 1/4 full, I climbed up to about 2000ft and floated down, quite a short flight. It produced about 25HP. Pete
well you are one crazy dude. But i love it and the retracting landing gear !!!awesome....I flew hang gliders a few years ago and always dreamed of something like that.happy flying..I know what its like up there.
If there is turbulence it can get a bit disconcerting. To calm my nerves I look at the horizon, the worst place to look is at my feet so that my head is upside down. I get scared if I'm stood on the edge of a cliff, but if I'm clipped into a glider, ready to launch on a cliff, the fear disappears and excitement takes over. Go for it! Pete
I've flying Hang gliders since 1994.The glider is much different lets say than standing on a 52 ft extension ladder. Now that is scary.Ladders done fly. Being on a hang glider gives you a feeling of support because it lifts you up and carries you. Yes you,ll be nervous at first until you learn to trust it.Try this:fallback into someones arms with your hands behind you back and heels 2gether,Scary eh! do you trust them?Well umm.Now have them put there arms around you and lean you back.safer feeln
Iw as thinking about the paragliding ability of these toys, so in case an ultralights engine stops one will come back to mother earth safely
but.. they are so sensitive to winds I have heard.. so is it better to have a n ultralight that is light enough to sustain an engine off but sensitive to winds or is it better way around to make it heavy loaded so it wont be affected by winds.. which means an engine out is .. fatal or?
The string has a bungee tied in (just down from the camera) which pulls the slack cord away from the prop. The unit can be weightshifted as normal and the free play at the back end is restricted to about 4 feet. Of course the prop is in line with my body. Have a look at the photos, the link is in the video info box. Pete
That string is the unit yaw restricting cord or 'safety line'. It stops the back end of the unit getting too far out of line (the thrust line). It just happens to be fitted to the crosstube junction like the video camera. Thanks anyway for your concern, Pete
I don't mean to be a pessimist or safety nut.. but it looks like the Jury rigged string that is operating the video camera is going to suck into the prop get wrapped around , create downward pressure or "negative g's" on the wing... which it is not designed to withstand.. then fold the wing. I think I'd do something with infrared.. much safer.
Fantastic, reminds me of my days flying my Flash 2 Trike around the northwest.Your videos really make me want to learn to hang glide(but I think i'm to porky now though 15.5 stone) Where is your latest vid posted? I agree with one of your previous comments on the marginal sfety of paragliders. FAR FAR safer with a flexwing!!!!!
Any chance of you listing the parts, sizes & suppliers used to make the frame, once wifey allows me to buy an engine I'll hopefully be concentrating on building a lockable shed for her to stay in while i build it & fly around South Wales, hoping not to break my arm in 5 places again !.
probably true. My friend has a 330 condor and a pro football player (around 390 lbs) learned to glide on it and did well. With engine my girlfriend and I we still wouldn't match that. I will have to check FAA regulations but I still think I would feel safer than with the gocart ultralight (never been in one) plus the ultralight are probably 5 time the price just in parts and welding???
I want to build one for tandom.... How much power do you have. I hear the average is low or mid 20s? Do you think Its possible to build for tandom and still keep the weight down?
UK rules allow only for a single place aircraft due to the maximum weight of the aircraft allowed. I would think an Ultralight would be safer for tandem operation.
I built a lightweight frame for a paramotor engine, works well. The handling is inferior to commercially available units due to the weight being so far to the rear. Pete
I am a conscious Black man and a hang glider pilot. Check out my channel. I interviewed someone who is also a Black hang glider pilot and has broken two world records.
Hi Pete, Great video..an inspiration to me. Can you tell me what kind of harness you are using and could i see your pictures of the unit? looking to do something similar myself. What kind of metal did you use in the construction of the unit?
The drive (thrust) is directed through the harness and to the hang strap, there is no load on the pilot's arms as the thrust causes the pilot to swing forward slightly when power is applied. There is not alot of difference power On and Off, the pilot MUST NOT push out- this will cause the nose to rise too high and may stall the glider. Pete
In the UK we learn to hang glide first, then add power, our governing Body is the BHPA, their weBsite has links to schools. I don't think the US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association support powered hanggliding, try their weBsite. A good source of info is- wikipedia, search for Powered Hang Glider
I agree, really cool! Accually shutting the engine of is one of the benefits .You can save fuel and soar for extended flights! And no the seat doesn,t "fall"off the harness is incredible strong with more lines that enough. Your also secured by 6000kg carabiner to the wing with a failsafe back up strap. Also most pilots fly with a hand tossed reserve parachute, but it,s really like having a life jacket in a boat .you,ll likelt never use it.
UK airlaw says max 10litres of fuel, so aBout 3hrs flight time. YouTuBe user Bontgoch has flown his to 11,000ft. Cruise is aBout 25mph, max 50mph though that depends on the hang glider wing, not the power unit. Pete
how much does it cost to make that? the glider and E-motor.

Probably will be up for it, depends on the date. I've only got a Mosquito at the moment, performance upgrades are coming over winter though, watch this space... PS Are you the Clive selling the Garmin 76C?

HOW LONG did the motor go for and how much power did it comsume
kevynthompson101 3 years ago
In the video at 0:50 you can see I takeoff with a 5litre tank that is 1/4 full, I climbed up to about 2000ft and floated down, quite a short flight. It produced about 25HP. Pete
flyingleek 3 years ago
what size & type engine are you using?? what is the complete weight of engine?? I'm a hang glider pilote and interested in making one for myself
jcalhoun9110 3 years ago
It's a ROS 125cc, engine and redrive weighed about 13Kgs, complete unit with harness was 23Kgs
flyingleek 3 years ago
well you are one crazy dude. But i love it and the retracting landing gear !!!awesome....I flew hang gliders a few years ago and always dreamed of something like that.happy flying..I know what its like up there.
islandbushpilot 3 years ago
Thanks for that, I enjoyed the vid :-)
BoldUniverse 3 years ago
how many cc's is that engine ?
paulsbluebalz 3 years ago
125cc with about 25HP.
flyingleek 3 years ago
amazing video Pete! but I want to ask, you, dont you get afraid when you are so high.. I want to fly but that freaks me out really
leviterande 3 years ago
If there is turbulence it can get a bit disconcerting. To calm my nerves I look at the horizon, the worst place to look is at my feet so that my head is upside down. I get scared if I'm stood on the edge of a cliff, but if I'm clipped into a glider, ready to launch on a cliff, the fear disappears and excitement takes over. Go for it! Pete
andypritch90 3 years ago
I've flying Hang gliders since 1994.The glider is much different lets say than standing on a 52 ft extension ladder. Now that is scary.Ladders done fly. Being on a hang glider gives you a feeling of support because it lifts you up and carries you. Yes you,ll be nervous at first until you learn to trust it.Try this:fallback into someones arms with your hands behind you back and heels 2gether,Scary eh! do you trust them?Well umm.Now have them put there arms around you and lean you back.safer feeln

Iw as thinking about the paragliding ability of these toys, so in case an ultralights engine stops one will come back to mother earth safely
but.. they are so sensitive to winds I have heard.. so is it better to have a n ultralight that is light enough to sustain an engine off but sensitive to winds or is it better way around to make it heavy loaded so it wont be affected by winds.. which means an engine out is .. fatal or?
leviterande 3 years ago
one of these days i am going to try that in california and, thats the real flying!
solomonpilot767 3 years ago
The string has a bungee tied in (just down from the camera) which pulls the slack cord away from the prop. The unit can be weightshifted as normal and the free play at the back end is restricted to about 4 feet. Of course the prop is in line with my body. Have a look at the photos, the link is in the video info box. Pete
flyingleek 3 years ago
makes sense, does that restrict your weight shift at all?, is the prop and engine in line with your body?
widgeonair 3 years ago
That string is the unit yaw restricting cord or 'safety line'. It stops the back end of the unit getting too far out of line (the thrust line). It just happens to be fitted to the crosstube junction like the video camera. Thanks anyway for your concern, Pete
flyingleek 3 years ago
I don't mean to be a pessimist or safety nut.. but it looks like the Jury rigged string that is operating the video camera is going to suck into the prop get wrapped around , create downward pressure or "negative g's" on the wing... which it is not designed to withstand.. then fold the wing. I think I'd do something with infrared.. much safer.

Outstanding presentation!

FAR FAR safer with a flexwing!!!!!
sprucetop2 3 years ago
Any chance of you listing the parts, sizes & suppliers used to make the frame, once wifey allows me to buy an engine I'll hopefully be concentrating on building a lockable shed for her to stay in while i build it & fly around South Wales, hoping not to break my arm in 5 places again !.
WHIFFY1973 3 years ago
I'm considering selling this one if you're interested? I'll only sell to an experienced flphg pilot though. Pete
flyingleek 3 years ago
Sadly i've not converted to flhg yet....... i'm still at the planning & begging wifey stage at the mo. Any ides on the price though, just in case ?

PS See my latest video for flying at Bedlinog, South Wales.
flyingleek 3 years ago
probably true. My friend has a 330 condor and a pro football player (around 390 lbs) learned to glide on it and did well. With engine my girlfriend and I we still wouldn't match that. I will have to check FAA regulations but I still think I would feel safer than with the gocart ultralight (never been in one) plus the ultralight are probably 5 time the price just in parts and welding???
nilesriver2 3 years ago
Sick. I'm making one.
maw662 3 years ago
I want to build one for tandom.... How much power do you have. I hear the average is low or mid 20s? Do you think Its possible to build for tandom and still keep the weight down?
nilesriver2 3 years ago
UK rules allow only for a single place aircraft due to the maximum weight of the aircraft allowed. I would think an Ultralight would be safer for tandem operation.
flyingleek 3 years ago
thats so friggin awesome!!! how did you do that
TrewBeatz 3 years ago
I built a lightweight frame for a paramotor engine, works well. The handling is inferior to commercially available units due to the weight being so far to the rear. Pete

Hi Pete, Great video..an inspiration to me. Can you tell me what kind of harness you are using and could i see your pictures of the unit? looking to do something similar myself. What kind of metal did you use in the construction of the unit?

BTW I went hang gliding over the weekend for my first time!!! We went to Oregon and my brother-in=law taught me and I went for it! Fantastic views!

Song is Lust for Life By Iggy Pop. Keep going with the hang gliding- the rewards come when you've completed the hardest Bit- Training! Pete

does the drive go throught the polit if so is it heavy on the arms pushing out.
FCbisleybob 4 years ago
The drive (thrust) is directed through the harness and to the hang strap, there is no load on the pilot's arms as the thrust causes the pilot to swing forward slightly when power is applied. There is not alot of difference power On and Off, the pilot MUST NOT push out- this will cause the nose to rise too high and may stall the glider. Pete
flyingleek 4 years ago
hey man that is bad ass what kinda engyn is that ? how many cc's
paulsbluebalz 4 years ago
It's a ROS 125cc. manufacturer is marcmotor, have a look at their weBsite.
flyingleek 4 years ago
whats the furthest distance you've ever travelled in a powered glider? is there a record?
ZebbMassiv 4 years ago
I tend to fly locally (10 mile radius) and land where I took off to save the logistics of getting retrieved. I don't know of a record. Pete
flyingleek 4 years ago
where can i learn to do this? this is incredible
tonikmajor 4 years ago
In the UK we learn to hang glide first, then add power, our governing Body is the BHPA, their weBsite has links to schools. I don't think the US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association support powered hanggliding, try their weBsite. A good source of info is- wikipedia, search for Powered Hang Glider

Alright, I Wanna make one of theese. Or at least glide with some kind of wings. Can you tell me what kind of Materia land Items to Use?
Rosser54 4 years ago
are thoes things safe
buckmee1 4 years ago
Pretty safe, if the engine fails it's no great shakes- you just glide to Earth.
flyingleek 4 years ago
can the seat thing fall off? Iam gust makeing sure if its safe cause I want to fly one sorry to bug you.
buckmee1 4 years ago
The harness is made from very strong materials and it's joined to the glider with a climBing type caraBiner. Gliders are tested to +6G and -3G.
flyingleek 4 years ago
thank you very much
buckmee1 4 years ago
I agree, really cool! Accually shutting the engine of is one of the benefits .You can save fuel and soar for extended flights! And no the seat doesn,t "fall"off the harness is incredible strong with more lines that enough. Your also secured by 6000kg carabiner to the wing with a failsafe back up strap. Also most pilots fly with a hand tossed reserve parachute, but it,s really like having a life jacket in a boat .you,ll likelt never use it.

hiya pete, this looks great fun, how long can u stay in the air for? and how high in feet can u go? and how fast?
snowboardinal 4 years ago
UK airlaw says max 10litres of fuel, so aBout 3hrs flight time. YouTuBe user Bontgoch has flown his to 11,000ft. Cruise is aBout 25mph, max 50mph though that depends on the hang glider wing, not the power unit. Pete
flyingleek 4 years ago
PS Bontgoch has a video of flying at 11,000ft on YouTuBe.
