I think that Index is a bit funnier than Railgun, though maybe I just prefer the male lead type of show. That or I think Touma is a better lead.

While he does seem to make a good lead, the first episode only really touched on personality development for those who don't read it or didn't watch Index. Touma was a fine lead, but Misaka seems to be in a position of leadership with co-leads as oppose to supporting characters. Such can be seen in something like K-On!, but with more emphasis on how she is the true leader for the season. At least this is how I see it. Feel free to reject my thoughts and replace with your own ^^.

Watch Index. Index also has badass fioght scenes. As long as you keep in mind the series are related but completely different, you won't be as confused.

The plot of Railgun is darker but also deeper than that of Index. Here, characters make morally ambiguous decisions and have to face the consequences. And all the leading characters are sufficiently complex (and different!) to make that work.

If they can avoid what they did with Index and not rush everything after the first arc, this will be a great ride.
