These commercials make me so jealous. I mean people back then were able to enjoy an ice cold, CANE SUGAR/GLASS BOTTLED Coke. I wish I had that!!!!! Common Coke, we want the real thing!!! If you gave us the real deal, then I'd definitely start buying Coke.
@wolfen26 Well actually Throwback Pepsi is not made with PURE cane sugar. They use sucrose, which is a blend of beet and cane sugar. So technically it is not the real thing. And most importantly it is not in a glass-deposit/returnable bottle. So, they still have a long way to go. Deposit bottles are the way to go. Currently Coca-Cola Winona, MN sells 24/6.5 ounce glass bottle Cokes for $6 plus deposit. Now that's the way it should be. Screw Mexican Coke which runs $1.50 per bottle.
@noremac4343 Yes. I can buy them too. The only problem is that they are not glass returnable bottles with PURE CANE SUGAR. They are $5 for a 6 pack (expensive!). Glass deposit bottles and PURE CANE SUGAR are the way to go because they are the ultimate form of recycling and they make the soda taste great. Deposit bottles also cut down on the cost due to how you are only paying for the soda inside the bottle. Coca-Cola Winona, MN is still doing this and it costs $6 for 24 bottles.
@TheIzkool Coca-Cola West in the Sasebo area also does this. 90 yen for a Coke is awesome, when a regular can costs 100 yen. And I am almost positive that they use real sugar, too.
@SirSnivyofNottingham Whoa. Are you referring to a city in Japan?? I'm strictly just talking about how America should do deposit bottle/cane sugar Coke. If that's the case, then America should take some lessons from Japan.
@TheIzkool Yes. But just the bottler serving Sasebo, Nagasaki prefecture. Nagasaki city does not do this, and it is limited in Fukuoka (mainly done by yatai).
@SirSnivyofNottingham Yeah. I just hope that America will eventually go back to the deposit bottle/cane sugar sodas. It's just the practical way to drink and buy soda.
@TheIzkool Well, with all of these attempts at going "green", somebody is bound to pitch such suggestion to the Coca-Cola Company, who could, in turn, pass this suggestion down to the bottlers. After all, returning and reusing glass bottles is much more "green" than returning plastic bottles, melting them down, then making new bottles. And not only that, but it would save the bottlers a shit-tonne of money, since they would not have to buy as many new bottles.
@SirSnivyofNottingham Absolutely. I’ve already voiced my opinion to Coca Cola many times about this topic through email. I recently talked to the man who runs Coca Cola Winona (the last Coke bottler in US who use glass returnables). Surprisingly he said plastic was the way to go due to how glass would make the trucks heavier which would cause more gas consumption.Still the savings through deposit bottles would override the costs for gasoline. And people would just love it!!
still great after all of these years. Lee Lacy directed the spot for McCann/NY, I believe. How do I know that? I represented Lee from 1989 to 1992...great talent and a great guy. We made some good money together.
there was a tv movie sequel to this commercial, where the kid is trying to get Mean Joe's shirt back to him for some reason ... wow, the things i remember.
@MIXEDUPTHROWNTOGETHR It's been a long time, but I'm guessing that Mean Joe was on a losing streak and the kid thought that he needed his jersey to reverse his bad luck ... Here, you go. Found this on Wikipedia:
In 1981, "The Steeler and the Pittsburgh Kid" expanded the Coke commercial into a TV movie with Greene playing himself and the kid played by Henry Thomas, who soon after starred as Elliot in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
..Propaganda of what? Is hitler back? Its an advertisment for Coke. How is this "A bunch of propaganda"? "OH SHIT, AFTER THAT COKE ADVERT I BETTER DRINK ONLY COKE AND NOTHING BUT, HOLY FUCK IF I DON'T I WONT BE ABLE TO SMILE"
Its an advert, not some government conspiracy to brainwash you.
@MrRukale kid gives dude a "coke" for being one of the most badass athletes in the world at the time. Dude must subordinate, not deserving this prized "coke" offered by a child with a better vocabulary. There is a reason this type of advertisement only worked with these two particular personalities and was OK'd to air at this particular point in time.
@808bayside actually you are wrong about both. The security didn't start getting crazy until the early 90's, and even then, you could still get access. You could do a lot of things involving the players back then that you cant now
And for the second part, Mean Joe was very fan friendly, especially to children.
I saw The Newhart Show with Bob Newhart and one of the episodes was where Bob and his friends was at Boston Garden home of the Celtics and Bob lost his bench pass and couldn't see the rest of the game. So when one of the Celtics was limping off the court Bob gave his soft drink to him, then when the ball player was finished he tossed his green sneakers to Bob and I couldn't stop laughing.
@lusciouslady73 according to "For God, Country & Coca-Cola" the boy is Tommy Oken, and the reason the ad worked so well is he really was in genuine awe of "Mean" Joe Greene, and kept muffing his lines. Greene had to chug 18 bottles of Coca-Cola before they got it right.
You know Coke used to have cocaine in it? That's why it was so popular in the 1800's, it would make people feel good and keep them addicted. True story. Look it up.
Anyone heard the local Burgh legend that Mean Joe was a dick to the kid on set? I did so many times growing up. Funny though, he is Mean Joe Green WTF you expect? Thumbs up if you've heard it.
@RonPaul2008DotComYal He was not mean to the kid and is supposed to be a nice guy in real life. He was called Mean for two reasons. 1-It rhymes with Greene, 2-He was the most fearsome linebacker of his generation. He broke through offensive lines like they were made of paper and was every quaterback's worst nightmare. The four-time Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers of the late 70s was absolutely the most balanced team in the NFL. Actually, they were flawless.
@arkady714 Dude I'm Burgh born and raised. You don't need to tell me nothing about the Stillers! I was only asking if anyone heard that rumor not if it was true. Next you'll be telling me why it's called the steel curtain or why it was called 3 rivers stadium :)
@RonPaul2008DotComYal Your original post did not say you were from Pittsburgh. It also implied that he was called mean because he was a dick to the kid in the ad, or so I thought.
@LoganfarbarTV I'm not sure if that's the same thing as defensive tackle, but when I looked it up on wikipedia, it credited Greene as being a defensive tackle. In any case, he was not a linebacker. My bad.
I heard that the original choice for this commercial was Roger Staubach, but the producers decided that the white kid/Afro-American combination was more socially meaningful. Thumbs up!!
