david83k, not sure if you can see it in the video but there is an IR filter over the lens. This is why it is resilient to background motion and light sources.
Hi fouseproject! Have you put an IR-pass filter on the camera lens and IR LEDs around it to track the IR rays reflecting at the fingertip? You can use use free blob tracking software such as CCV/touchlib or reactivision to track the reflections.
Yes, the goal is to have them in stores one day as a simple plug n play usb device.
@shadman1911 yes I developed the hardware and software for this. The actual hardware is very simple, the real innovation is in the software that makes it run. I am working on version 2, and I hope to make it more usable for the average computer user.
Very cool, I'd like to see this in stores one day, it would be very useful for simple things like checking out stuff online. Making one to where you could just point at the screen might be something all together different than what you've got, but you have definitely impressed me.
Thanks Ianmundo. I agree it can be strenuous but using a memory foam wrist pad it has been a very comfortable experience for me. Work on version 2 has begun, and at the end I hope to get some more formal usability studies done.
Nice, but hovering your hand in one place for any amount of time is going to be difficult for some people.
This system would work well in a situation where the user would only have to use the interface for a short period of time, thus minimizing strain. The non-contact element makes this a good solution for outdoor installations because no contact with peripherals is needed. This eliminates the damage such equipment invariably picks up from the public.
put sticky reflectors on your fingers if you wanna hold your hand further from the cam...

Well done!
