I just read Anne Rice's Cry To Heaven again. In it, her characters discuss the great talent of Scarlatti. What a treat it is for me to hear his music on the heels of reading about him in her book. I always appreciate the opportunity that folks have provided me to learn about great composers from any time period of music.

Pianist and comedian Victor Borge used to do a bit where he's sitting at the piano reading and playing a piece of music. It sounds really weird. He stops, looks at the sheet music, it's upside down. He turns it right side up and starts playing the piece properly (which he was playing in reverse before). Hilarious bit of showmanship.

I used to do Hanons all the time when I was an aspiring professional (hell I used to do them in 12 keys) but I don't have that kind of time anymore. I find Bach inventions keep the technique relatively intact and are actually worth playing.

OK - why did you cease to be an 'aspiring professional'? From my own experience I would say that you have both considerable talent AND mastery of technique...minus the ego & appalling lack of taste exhibited my many classical musicians.

Often ego blinds them....in many ways.

...and harpsichords can be obtained.
