No of course you can use it for Standard Synth Sounds. But it's a modular Synth. So the Fun is to create unusual Sounds by patching them for hours. The way is the goal.
Not only is it not "digital specific", FM isn't digital at all, it's analog. Anything you might think you're doing in the digital domain is simply a simulation of analog waveforms.
Did I forget to mention FM synthesis? Yes I did, and yes this was digital. It was a way of creating rich sounds using digital phase modultion, I beleive PWM (pulse width modulation) was used as well. So I guess you can say that FM synthesis is/was digital. And from now on I'll be more careful when I comment on something.
That sound is generated by a sine wave feeding a low pass gate, which in turn is being modulated by an ar envelope generator with very short attack and decay times.
what is this AHMW 2007 :)

I guess these units are just good for sound effects?

Wow, that would be so fun to play with one of these! But that did sound like the aliens from Signs composed it.
P.S. These comments are hilarious! (have any of you ever watched 'Big Bang Theory'?)

did i happen to mention that luther rochester is a great fellow?

Is that an FM sound?

No its an analog sound

you can do FM with analogue.

no . that's BUCHLA sound!

oh for heavens sake. Both of you crack a book on analog synthesis. Fm is one oscillator modulating another. Its not digital specific.
