I got to play with him before he checked out. Thanks so much for posting this. I wish I had recorded the gig we did in New Orleans at Jazz Fest Time '91.
He was very patient with us young guys who were recruited to back him up.
Hello to the Bennett Family.Wayne Bennetts son "Larry Bennett"would love to hear from you all.Inbox me here with your contact info or email him at(larrybennett81@yahoo.com)
Wayne Bennett! Most under rated, under appreciated, guitar genius in American music. Listen to the raw and driving solo he takes in Bobby Bland's Wishing Well and you KNOW where Eric Clapton got his schooling before Mayall. Everybody learns from someone and a lot of people owe a huge debt to Wayne Bennett. A true virtuoso. Thanks so much from New Orleans for posting this!
True story: 1963, I was standing next to the stage watching Bobby Bland live with Pluma Davis Orchestra with Wayne Bennett on guitar. Being a young (17) guitarist, I was staring at Bennett's hands. He spotted me, flashed a smile and turned his body to give me a better view of his playing. Such a kind man. I've never forgotten that moment.
One of the true giants of the guitar!!!!!! I had the pleasure to know him and play with him. This was the foundation for what they call "smooth jazz." You better recognize!!!

I met Wayne in 1984 when he moved to New Orleans. I played keys in his first band that he formed down there. I learned a lot from him and he knew a lot of funky tunes. I enjoyed playing with him. Glad to see this post up. It brings bak memories.
Who did the radio version of this, not the o'jays original with lyrics, onion horton in east st.louis use to use it in his morning show before he got cancelled.
This is my first time getting to see Wayne Bennett play. I hear a lot about him from my grandmother and aunt....his two sisters. Barbara and Diane are their names. I'm from Dayton, OH. Family if you're out there hit me up at here on youtube. John (junior) Burrows what's up Fatty and I were talking about you at the shop today!
R.I.P. in peace Uncle Wayne...you and your gift will be missed.
Agreed! Thank you for posting...it's rare to come across such a candid and upclose performance with wayne bennett. How awesome does that guitar sound? :)
Wayne Bennett toured with Jimmy Reed in the 60's and recorded with him in the second half of the sixties.
I did a tribut to Jimmy Reed - an animated short film - just 74 seconds long. I like to invite you to watch it. Just click on my name. Your video is great. Proably not too many films of W Bennett do exist. Therer are only 3 little clips of Jimmy Reed left. It is a shame. Greetings from Germany
This is so weird my friend is sitting here next to me and Wayne Bennett is his grandfather! There are so many people here that seem to be related! LOL
Beautiful - what a treat to see Wayne Bennett. For my money he was the best. The solo in Elmore James' 13 year old boy - the wildest, most decadent of them all. And the sublime jazzy solo in Bobby Bland's Stormy Monday. What a genius.
Wayne to me is the classiest player. I play his music to people and they are unmoved- presumably because they are lost in the Great Blues Cliches that have taken hold, and great playing and economy just don't seem to count. Anyway, I have spent hours listening to his playing on "Stormy Monday" by Mr Bland, and that's how I want to play the blues.
omg, i'm all crying, now. I got to play with Wayne in New Orleans in Willie Lockett & The Blues Krewe. I've not seen or heard anyone like him before or since. He could play solo instrumental guitar on the band breaks and get a better response than the entire Blues Krewe put together. I took all of his performing to heart as lessons, and I still try to play to his standards, though I might never meet them. His passing from emphysema was one of my primary motovators for finally quitting smoking.
Thank you putting this video on Y/T. How I have longed to hear my Dad's voice again and to view him in action yet again. My dad was my biggest fan and I his. He is surely missed. To my cousins Trina and Mateking,I have been searching for you guys...Aunts Shirlel and Sandra and the rest. I too miss Uncle Jerry.

Many years ago, the company I worked for provided backline for most of the clubs in New Orleans.
I got to know Mr. Bennet pretty well setting up his gear for him in his later years. I'll never forget him.
