sometime ago I listened to Celine Imbert singing this song in the Square Peace, São Paulo. The afternoon was a little bit cold, the sun was almost setting and the moon was rising in the horizon. Oh, for a moment I felt was in paradise.
Thank you for this . My introductiun to Villa Lobos was an old creeky record from Joan Baez .It remans my favourite to this day...thanks a million for posting this
This has always been a lyrical and fluent performance of this demanding work. The voice is flexible and conveys huge emotional energy with warmth and color It's a real treasure in the repertory to this composition. Bravo!
oh boy that takes me back to being a teenager. i had this on vinyl - or rather, i kept "borrowing" it from a friend of my parents' (i.e. absconding with it) - and i would listen to it over and over and over ...
It is too fast, however. What's the hurry? My favorite is the Bidu Sayao recording. There the phrasing is so deep so tender, passionate. Time to reflect and get inside the beauty of this wonderful creation.
I'm surprised her Portuguese diction is in fact quite good. Most performers fail to sing in intelligible and flowing Portuguese. IMO this is clearly not one of the most beautiful or vocally exquisite recordings of this masterpiece, but her sentimental, haunting interpretation pleased me a lot. Her fast vibrato is no problem to me, but an occasional shrillness of her light voice is. That said, I must say she clearly had a talent and a lot of musicality.
I savor comparing the Fleming, Baez and Kiri Te Kanawa versions. The technician/classical orientation vs. the more purely emotional version is edifying. All are stunning. This work is one of my all-time favorites. I love Rene's rendition, but my heart belongs to Ms. Baez.
@honesttaxes I guess it is that. I am a 'cellist, so possibly prefer slightly richer darker tones. I did listen to all 3 versions (and some others). I first encountered this work 50 years ago I think, when I came back from shopping for the Elgar, in London and found an EP of Victoria's ucked into the sleeve. I hadn't kept my receipt and couldn't remember where I had bought it so couldn't return the 'bonus' - and what a bonus! It became and still is a favourite work of mine.
Friends are surprised when I say my favorite all-time sopranos are Leontyne Price, Victoria de los Angeles, and Joan Baez. I am thinking of the voices, like Jussi Björling and Glenn Yarbrough among tenors, who sound celestially gorgeous, regardless of training or musical genre, in a world of strident, overly pushed hollering. Thank you for this precious gem!
Une version loin d'être totalement décevante,à part le récitatif entre les deux cantilènes, les coupures de souffle et l'aigu final:Bien essayé tout de même!
@toyokuni3 proper training you may well be right as for me i know noyhing about the criteria of the trained voice but for me thats ok sometimes its nice to appreciate the natural voice complete with flaws and let the heart felt emotions carry it because of course with training NEARLY every bodies voice could be improved on but i take it on board what you say you may be a better judge than me you may know things that i dont of course
@LousyPianist I admire much of Joan Baez's work. Having heard the original with the composer conducting nearly 50 years ago, I appreciate he purity of line produced by both singer and 'cellists. I'm glad Joan introduced a new audience to this work, but don't ignore the other versions!
@marka10ant Definitive version? While Victoria de los Angeles rendition is beautiful, I would say that Bidu Sayao's version is exquisite. I prefer the lighter tones of her fine voice. Interestingly, Joan Baez' voice and interpretation of this song is much closer to Bidu Sayao's. Perhaps it depends on the tonal quality one prefers
I like it better than the Dawn Upshaw recording -- Ms. Upshaw sounds like she's changing her mouth position on every note for the "ah" instead of letting the breath carry it. Glad I found this!
I am the one who revived this piece out of my mind and from beneath the ashes of time in 2006... and here it is now and for always as villa-lobos intended....

She nailed it to perfection. This is an impeccable interpretation, take it from a Brazilian Villa Lob bos fan.

More than a hippie, Joan gives substance to social responsibility

It's interesting to witness the elements of Bel Canto she always had in her technique, it's almost as gloriously sung as Sayao...

with the proper training this woman could have been a magnificent lyric soprano. of course, she didn't do too bad at what she did do!

The album reached the US charts in January 1965, almost certainly recorded in 1964.
Good attempt, but too much vibrato for this. The definitive version is Victoria de los Angeles with Villa Lobos conducting his own composition.

@marka10ant too much vibrato?! Joan's rapid vibrato is why I love her!!

Does anyone remember what year she did this? I recall that it was played on the popular air waves - not on the classical station - a real crossover.
