I fell in love with this game when I was 6. I used to ask to go to the arcade every time we went out to eat just so I could play this game. It was one of the few video games I played before I got my nes for Christmas of 87.
The 64 version was the best! I hope they will make a movie of this game (like minesweeper :D ) So much adrenaline when they speed up and keep disappearing and reappearing in different places. I don't like the voice in this version, thou
Love this game, it's just really abstract, no real world physics in it, which makes it great, if they re made it, they would make it 3D and kill it. Sounds like Stephen Hawking had some early in game voice-over work :)
Classic game. I remember going up to a laundromat near my house in 5th grade when this game came out and played it non stop. that was back in the days you could leave your house as a 10 year old and not really tell your parents where you were going. i remember my heart racing whenever the Wizard came out..
I always got freaked out when the Wizard appeared, 'cause 95% of the time, he caps me or he escapes. Got this on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for the original Xbox. Awesome game, a real classic.
One of my favorite Commodore 64 games ever. Fortunately C64's version didn't have that annoying voice all over to ruin the dramatic music. Funny that the AI player shoots you, this isn't a PVP game. Work together with a friend and you can get far.
The entire game is constructed of win. Simple, addictive gameplay, especially made for two allies/rivals, synthesized horror-movie mood music and the heartbeat effect that speeds up, and all those bizarrely cool threat-phrases that only the badass Wizard could get away with saying...it all gets under your skin and haunts a little dusty portion of your brain (especially if you first saw the arcade cab as a little kid - nightmare fuel).
this game is friggin awesome. Every chance I play my PS2 or PSP, the first game I pick on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 or Midway Arcade Treasures Extended Play is Wizard of Wor.
I also recall playing the actual arcade machine in an arcade in San Diego when I was eight or so.
This was the game that originally taught me to be a camping whore bastard. You couldn't win any other way. Best I ever did on any version was dungeon 21 on the Atari 400/800. God I loved this game.
Lol - this game is drug, just wached, and now i wanna play it. :P Cool that PSP has games like that, you know.. ds more often has games like that now. (Simple and fun)
the Atari 2600 version was nOT that BAD. Could not get that far on the arcade version.
BTW Videotiopia, a video game museum set up all for play(!!), is touring here in Rochester (at the awesome Strong Museum of Play) (there are 89 games): exterminator (1980), Dominos (like surround-1976!!!!), GORF (1982-one of my favorites), TRon and discs of TRON, Dunebuggy, Donkey Kong, Pacman, Ms. Pacman, Sky diver, Hard Drivin' (double screen), kiddie KLAX, Lunar Lander, Space War, Pole position, Breakout
Isn't this on the Midway Treasures game? Anyway, this seems like a really lame game for $4.99-$9.99. Honestly, I like it, but that one game for Intellivision blows this away. Night Crawler......No Night Stalker. That should be remade.
This game needs to be rereleased or revived on XBLA. But they should not make it look like a modern game! Instead it should have plenty of nostaigia and have the same good old arcade look. If Midway revives it, they should do it like Taito did with Space Invaders Extreme or what Namco Bandai did with Pac Man: Championship Edition. Do that, and you have a worthy revival.
Used either the same or very similar hardware to Gorf. The voices are from a text to speech chip and not sampled. Also used the same graphics chip as the Bally Astrocade home console. In the Astrocade this chip had only 4k and left some pins unconnected so it was unable to use it's high res mode. In the Astrocade it could only do 160x102, in Bally's arcade boards it was capable of 320x204 because the pins were connected and it had more display memory.
This game has always haunted me because when i was a kid my dad brought this home for the atari 2600 back in the day and i yanked it out with the power still on and fuked it up( come on i was like 4 or sumthin ). he never let me forget it for years so i bought one off ebay to shut him up. it actually worked. wish i had done it sooner. lol, great review.. =)
Very nice. The Atari 2600 port isn't as good but holds the very basic elements and is still fun. You know, pretty much how just about every port of an arcade game is on the Atari. This makes me want a PSP so much more. I would put MAME on mine for sure.
That's maybe the first bad-ass game ever. I just love it. You forgot to mention the Wizard who appears occasionally after killing the Worluk. And when you kill him it makes the whole screen scream in agony. What a game for 1980!
Oh, I do have a nice woodgrain Atari 2600, I just wasn't sure it was worth the cost. I think they wanted $10 for it or something. Same with Tunnel Runner, which I think was published by the same company.
I find it funny that if someone wants to have the first comment but not write first! and have the world scorn them, they just put nice. I mean . . . what's nice, you being the first to comment,or the video because I'm pretty sure that you haven't watched the video yet.
