@liljoerox James Toney. Bernard is not an old school fighter. Old school fighter's don't run in with their head down and hold. I think Toney can still beat Bernard.
@PHILLYHEAT215 yeah that was a hell of a shot for sure. but that was also one of the laziest jabs I've ever seen from Barkley. I love watching this fight.. it's brilliant
Damn, two detached retina's?? How come Ray retired becuz of one?? Oh ya, he was waiting for Hagler to fight some battles and have 70 fights before he would even think of stepping into the ring with him. LOL...
yeah because MMA takes away your attention span. any idiot with 4oz gloves can get a 1 punch KO, it isn't hard. toney puts on a masterclass in this fight, he was pure genius from bell one to the very end. in MMA you just have to get lucky once.
@isk8erboi hey man no problem with that. at least you didn't come on here bashing the sport for no reason. i prefer boxing out of the two myself, but i respect mma.
@isk8erboi Well at least you tried, i guess. Boxing isn't for everyone, same way MMA isn't for everyone. I enjoy both sports, but I am partial to boxing. You have to be a fan of boxing to appreciate the technical brilliance of a prime James Toney. Personally, I find 2 grown men rolling around on the floor trying to get a submission for 5 minutes boring as fuck, but I do enjoy the stand up strikers like Anderson Silva and Machida.
Terrible start for Barkley, just terrible. Of course I give Toney credit for his quick & accurate punching, but blame Barkley & his corner for seemingly having no idea how to approach this fight. No real game plan and no defense. He let his face get punched into puffiness -- to where he could hardly see by the 4th round. Very little skill demonstrated by Iran. I think I had him overrated. And probably the best fight I've seen from Toney (not a favorite of mine).
if you watch barkley's fights, he always does this. james did a beautiful job of exploiting barkley's defensive flaws. whereas most fighters would try to fight iran on the outside, toney let him walk in all night long, yet still nullified his offense completely AND countered back skillfully.
james toney's defense and countering ablities on the inside are the best i've ever seen, period.
@Robstailey Yeah, good points, Rob. He's very good in those areas you mention. Overall his style is not one I'm greatly fond of, but like many top boxers (right now Mayweather, for example; Hopkins is another) he's good at not getting hit squarely. And to that he adds his formidable countering abilities, so . . . basically what you already pointed out. Having said that, though, I think Barkley had a very poor and fairly brainless outing here.
@Alkhir69 forget that - HE IS A FAT EMBARRASSMENT WHO SLATED THE BOXING COMMUNITY AND GOT HIS ASS WHUPPED IN MMA. They had to use SUBTITLES because he is so punch drunk and fat...
If Toney had trained for the Jones fight he'd have beaten him. He gained back like 18lbs after the weigh in, he was drained, he had nothing that night.
@painesvillesandman, na man. he definitely could have put up a better fight if he had been more serious, but as great as james toney is, he ain't fuckin with roy jones
Toney's style suited jones jr well. Toney was very maneuverable in the pocket, and could be outboxed from the outside. Hopkins's style also suited jones, in a lesser degree though, as he was more manouvrable around the ring than toney. Toney's inside game is genius.
@boxing1000 maybe difficult to say because barkleys big and slow jones was quick on his feet and with his hands so toney may never have been able to deal with it
@boxing1000 This toney showed up against Roy Jones but he couldnt match Roy's footwork and handspeed. Ps accord Roy his due. Roy was a class or 2 ahead of Hopkins and Toney in his prime.
@amosbett Not so.Toney had to lose 20 pounds or so in two weeks and was completely drained which contributed to the loss to Roy.Not to take anything away from Jones but he did not fight a well conditioned Toney.
@boxing1000 toney had problems with the weight before that fight, he had gained an incredible 19 pounds in less than 24 hours... you know what that means? And jones should have gived him a re-match but never did..
Toney knew he was a genius & that was his problem. He knew on ability alone he could beat anyone on the planet - he also did'nt give a shit about looking after his body between fights & that's the only reason why Tiberi (who was robbed), Jones & then Griffin beat him during his very best years.
If you watch this fight, the Nunn fight & even the 1st McCallum fight - it really gives you an idea of how special he was for his age & what Toney really could have been despite his already HOF career.
@Grieves79 Yeah he was gifted and a genius but that don't mean a thing when you shit on your talent and that's what he did so fuck him and the accolades. Toney shitted on his talent, his name could be mentioned with the greatest of the greats but he thought his shit didn't think so fuck him!
@vincespell well ok, something to remember if you make any mistakes in life.....prepare to have the book thrown at you....live by the sword, die by the sword....
@Grieves79 Please dont mention Nunn. He was probably saturated with drugs and was not his best. Nunn was a massively more talented fighter than Toney but he just wasnt consistent. I will admit however that weight control and taking care of yourself between fights is part of the fight.
what? nunn looked great against toney, he fought just like he always did. on the outside, surrounding toney with a quantity of punches. toney was hard to hit however, and started landing solid counters late in the fight. nunn got tired and james hurt nunn in the 9th and 10th before he timed that perfect left hook and ended the fight.
@Robstailey yes, I just said I agree that Nunn was boxing the nuts of Toney and he was tired which is why he got caught with the hook. IMHO I think a fresher Nunn would A: have seen the shot and B: would have recovered from it (only because he would have seen some of it). He got hit on his blind side when he (according to Toney) was breathing like a freight train. He could punch like one as well but he got progressively worse after getting the title because you know why...
Toney is a beautifully skilled fighter. He and mayweather jr., both have a bulletproof defensive style that is unique in the whole game. Like ali`s rope a dope taken to a higher level. Why can`t any young fighter be like them?!
Sturm: Don`t like at all. I think his footwork is really bad. Calderon: I totally agree, but he is puertorican. Kessler: ok. DZINZURUK: Don`t know have to watch first..
Eddie Chambers dude... you'll like him he has an amazing guard he can block a bullet, 1/10 jabs land on him and they're not even flush, he eats alot of body shots tho cuz he has such amazing defense of his head
@Luke1864 no, Nunn is like Ali. A clean Nunn (like a Nun if you will) is the greatest (which was a very short part of his career) He was so talented he could get away with smoking weed between fights as I expect he was doing and running around at night instead of sleeping...
@Jorsalfar maybe Barkley was well shot by that stage? Nothing v Benns performance but hey, this is boxing (Sun Zu) 'choose your time of battle'. ie get a name opponent when he is beyond his best and beat him (example; Lewis v old and worn out Tyson)
