  • The arrival of aggressive private sector space enterprises like SpaceX has changed the whole equation. Now going to the Moon first would no longer be a distraction that sucks all the focus away from Mars. On the contrary, private participation ensures multiple players, so the Moon wouldn't be able to suck everybody away from Mars. Going to the Moon first is the better idea, because it's cheaper/easier to do space tourism there, and space tech would improve faster. That gets us to Mars faster.

  • still don't know why we need at ERV... Just send people who don't want to come back, that way you build a colony every 2 years from the word go, instead of just exploring the planet with 5 people for a year and a half

  • that zubrin guy is cool

  • Fate?

Since when did the future suck?

  • 4.20 HE [Zubrin] choose to go to the Mars, not because it is easy ....but because he thinks we don't have anything to do better

Columbus went with smaller ships then in the movies,

  • If we went to Mars, wouldn't NASA just lie about what they found? It wouldn't be the first time that NASA lied.

  • @RevDarkehorse Why would they lie about what they find? Fair enough to fling an idea like that out there, but just think about it. They dont have anything to gain by doing that, and by lying they undo the entire effort of getting to Mars anyway, since one of the primary reasons is to seek out answers in science.

  • @vgyu8gf68 And with that, no longer have to argue with you.

  • @vgyu8gf68 There is just so many things wrong with that statement. But i'll just make a quick summation: There is no way a program that incredulous would ever be done due to the amount of investment and generations upon generations of work. We're already in an area of stagnation in NASA, and with recent face of cuts staring at the program's face, degradation is almost inevitable, unless a plan is created that isn't so demanding. The Mars Ref Plan in that respect, is more feasible, realistically.

  • @vgyu8gf68 To extract such minerals would be astronomical with regards to the amount of capital needed. A barrier to contain humans that blocks radiation and potential cosmic debris alone would be incredible, not to mention the actual extraction equipment. And unlike Mars, Moon has a direct influence on Earth and tampering with the Moon too much can lead to catastrophic failure. And follow your own advice, it seems you haven't done so with Mars.

  • @vgyu8gf68 To have faith in the future of humanity isn't a cult, it's a goal. To create a permanent Moon-base or even the International Space Station has more problems with it than settling in Mars. Finance, lack of materials, little to no hope in terraforming Moon because of its lack of resources, and the enclosures to inhabit the Moon would be much less realistic then placing humans on Mars. And no, travelling huge distances doesn't need "A" (1) huge craft.

  • @vgyu8gf68 It's funny how you point it to be a cult when past explorers had undergone worse conditions than potential explorers. Save for finance needed to invest, the knowledge of medication, a safe and transportable habitat to stay in, and life-preservation suits that allows for grand scales of exploration easily pose better situations for the explorers than those of Lewis and Clark, Christopher Columbus, and Magellan. To say it's a cult is to deny the significance of past great explorers.

  • @vgyu8gf68 @vgyu8gf68 It's funny how you say it's a cult when past explorers have easily met worse conditions than today's explorers. Save for the amount of money needed to educate the explorers, the knowledge of medicine, safe, comfortable, and transportable habitat, and life-preserving suits that would allow the explorers to travel great distances without the chances of infection, infestation, or ailments of the sort easily creates an exploration much safer than expedited of Lewis and Clark.

  • @vgyu8gf68 ...Which is the point of Mars Semi--Direct/Reference Plan. Reliable, safe, and cheap way to send people to explore on Mars for a year and a half using technology we have today. And yes, it will take an incredibly long time, probably even longer than one human life cycle to even begin to terraform, but being able to send humans to Mars using 19th century technology to create fuel for 21st century technology thereby proves that it is possible for potential expansion.

  • @vgyu8gf68 Unlike the Moon, the point is that Mars has the potential to be terraformed, which can mean expansion to a planet other than Earth... which is a good thing.

  • @vgyu8gf68 Well, the idea is to have another craft creating fuel while those on Mars explore Mars. When the window of returning to Earth comes again, they'll have enough fuel to, theoretically, break through Mars's gravity well.

  • @vgyu8gf68 the inevitable expansion of Humanity beyond Earth
