  • lol she is hilariousss! <3

  • @PURPLEPILLBABIES, it wasnt Dipset it was AZ on the "Pieces of Man" album

  • the title is SEA LION WOMAN

  • @Angelfeather100

it can be spelled both ways. look it up on wikipedia!

  • One of my favorites of Nina's. The woman was so incredibly talented...

  • A jazz great. God bless you Nina. RIP.

  • It's SEA LION

    not See Line

    Quit jivin'

  • @motelcalifornia nina's version is called see-line woman, not sea lion

  • @motelcalifornia Actually, her recording is called "See-Line", the same as the original folk song.

  • @motelcalifornia no it's not.

  • It would've been amazing to be part of the audience. Her character and talent were immense; and there is no-one who even marginally compares to her as an artist. Authentic to the bone. Thank you where ever you are.

  • Beautiful song, sung by a legend... the girls got rythum!!!

Just wondering how Killermod comment, turns that perfomamance into a "black and proud" thing?... im half Irish/English and white and pasty as they come, but love soul music!!

Get the chip of your shoulder dude....

  • what does See line means?

  • @pandaaa22 id also like to know

  • Words fail me, I love Nina ,<3

  • This is real music...you go girl

  • unreal, perfect music but yet so simple...

  • Wow this was deep in the heroine days

  • amazing)

  • The correct title of the song is Sea Lion Woman.

  • @red2strike uh... pretty sure its not

  • @browndaisies Uh pretty sure it is. though the folk song goes by many names on her ALBUM it certainly IS Sea Lion Woman.

  • Now I understand that Julie Delphy spoke on the hump of Nina Simone in that movie "Before Sunset. " They should make a film about Nina. I think I saw a French documentary about her, but I can not remember the name. If anyone knows please ...

    (google translator)

  • how did Kanye West make Bad News off this?

  • @TheSuirad its the percussion if you listen to it carefully you can hear it in Bad News. He's sampled Nina quite often!

  • @caribbelle im sorry but what is a percussion?

  • @TheSuirad the bongo

  • @TheSuirad in youtube search for Nina Simone Sea Lion Women then click on the second video with the purple picture of the scenary of the lake and mountain. That version is the studio version. This is live...live is always a bit different....but the live sounds soo soulful...i love it

  • Nina is a beast! <3 that woman.

  • great!

  • All of her songs are a breath of fresh air, to me, on some level. I feel as though there's all sorts of great, true and current music happening all around us. People just seem afraid to embrace it publicly. It's been said that music is the voice that tells us the human race is greater than it knows. Maybe that's the reason why.

  • Foundation man, foundation music. Crazy...we need more real artists, not ring tone artists.

  • Shoe Fly Away , That Must Be Some Stanky Shit . . .

  • You can tell the band and the audience just don't get it

Nina Simone serious about her music

people think she a commedienne making jokes

    not so

    serious

but later as the song progresses we can see she loosens up and enjoys performing the song.

    A superb artist.

  • @slocar1 yes about the audience but i shouldnt judge the band :-)

  • Can someone please tell me where I can find a recording of this performance. I absolutely must have this. PLEASE if anyone knows, tell me. If you only know the name and location that would help. Thanx

  • quelle grande dame....MERCI

  • She seems so sweet[:

  • ...She must have seduced many men only with her amazing voice. Indeed, I could fall in love with someone who talks me like that.

IT SEEMS THAT SHE CARESS WITH HER VOICE!

  • Amazing! She looks tired, in pain and fed-up with everything and man if looks could kill when the bottle fell over....but then she gets into her groove. I'm surprised she didn't extend it further considering she had the support of the audience...she could've easily dragged this out for 10mins or more

  • Amazing! She looks tired, in pain and fed-up with everything but then she gets into her groove. I'm surprised she didn't extend it further considering she had the support of the audience...she could've easily dragged this out for 10mins or more

  • Love you Nina!! So cool!!

  • Damn dude.. She kinda fuggin rocked.

  • "Don't speed it up, man." She was a complete and utter musical genius that just oozed soul.

  • the inspiration

  • HOT DAMN THIS IS THE ISH!!!!

  • she was so funny

  • I like this version.

  • Nina Simone is a shining example of musical awesomeness.

  • brother bear, america would be worse off withour Black Americans...but everybody's soul here makes up the soul of our country. Black , white and all else, too.

  • iI am 67 and I love this video. I still am confused. I love the version in The General's Daughter an Feist 's version in (Paris) Is Nina trying to tell us her song is not the same one? The words are different and she won't allow the hard licks. She says her song is soft.It seems to me she is saying the Cajun playground song is an entirely different song. Help this old lady out!!!!

  • @Bobbyejoan

I love the version in the General Daughter too but this song is amazing in whatever version :)

  • FANTASTICO!!!!!!!!!

    Grazie!!! Roberto.

  • Thank you, "BrotherBearAZ" for advocacy of truth and respect.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this.

  • where's the rest of this show...that was incredible.

  • Legend!

  • See line woman...those were the harbor prostitutes werent they? the ones that mostly dealt with naval soldiers as tricks?

  • An amazing voice, effortless, a gift from God

  • Check out Wikipedia's page on Sea Lion Woman. That page indicates that this song came from a children's playground song. It doesn't make sense that that phrase in a children's song refers to a prostitute. I think the "she lyin" meaning works best for this song AND for the Mississippi children's game song that I found in a 1965 book.

But regardless of what that phrase means, it's a great song.

  • Thanks for posting this! I love Nina Simone's attitude! I collect African American children's game songs and found an old song from Mississippi that ends in "Sea Lion" or "See Line" or something sounding like that. I think it may be connected to this song popularized by Nina Simone. Google Cocojams children's game songs for that song. I also was part of a discussion on Sea Lion woman on Mudcat. I came to agree that that phrase was the 2nd person's sayin "she lyin" to what the 1st person said.

  • Amazing performance..... she sets the mood and works the crowd!

  • music ina perfection ***** see line drums binghi

  • If you know Nina Simone (or listen to any of her CD's) you'd know she has quite a sense of humor. Love her! She does this all through her recordings..... She's so funny and talented and I LOVE HER VOICE.... The Greatest.

  • Good song, good singer, don't know very much about Nina Simone. My first impression is that she seems condescending in this video.

  • @thegoodgeneral lol! She does seem a bit condescending yes. However,.. if it were your song, then you'd probably want it right! Besides, when one's her age and has her celebrity,... one can get away with doing things like that. lol.

  • Divas reign, sadly.

  • i love the way she moves throughout the song.......nice song

  • brings me to tears

  • god, she's singing from the heart

  • @alindbk amen . . . that's the only way to do it . . . passionately

  • Wow Love it

  • She wiggled :o)

  • Amazing version...

Can you reupload?...think you missed with the video conversion.

  • out of this world...woooooow

  • Nina Simone makes me proud to be a woman...and look forward to aging. What a magnificent lady she was!

  • sea lion*

  • @cgray00

It's "See Line".. Fiest misspelled it when she covered it.

  • clearly intentional, though.

  • @LilStewerdess

actually its the other way around Nina Simone changed it when she snag it. Sea Lion is a folk song and Nina changed it to "see line."

  • @cgray00 Feist*

  • Nina Simone was tired-being an angel was a hard job : ). Love You Nina!!!

  • cant get tired of this song ,,, love it - love you Nina ,, you was a true beutiful curagious rebellion ,,

  • wow this is outstanding !!!!

    nina simone totally kicks ass

  • Being black is beautiful and Nina Simone embodied and embraced that. If you are African or black American whether you hair is pressed Afro curly of relaxed. Being proud of you and what you are is all that matters because no matter how you think you front. Everyone else still looks at your skin. You should wear it proud and well.

To love God is to love your self

  • @BrotherBearAZ humanity itself started in africa anyway!!

  • @BrotherBearAZ

America is a great country because of Americans; it has nothing to do with race. And don't you ever forget that.

  • @BrotherBearAZ Beware of creating heros/heroines and stating absolutes. They rarely stand up to scrutiny. Life just isn't that simple.

  • Kanye West-Bad News

  • She was and still is the most riveting performer ever! Her voice is a unique mix of sorrow, soul, and happiness. I just love her!

  • Haunting.

  • Her eyes are so tired and sad :(

  • una leccion de sutileza. y detiene al público en el punto en el que empiezan a ser groseros.

  • wish i could get my friends into this music...... too bad they dont have TASTE! oops

  • i was willing, indeed eager to say the same exact thing u just commented heheheheheh yeah they think i'm 80 and have no sense of party......

  • @browndaisies ...maybe their taste's different to yours, or mine...Still, nina's one of the best...and my friens do like her very much

  • @browndaisies join the club my friend !!!

  • @browndaisies LOL i know what u mean

  • I would of loved to have been able to sit on a porch with this women, cool breeze, ice tea near by, and just listen to her life stories....But somethings telling me their not good.............

  • She had a great sense of humor:-)

  • sea lion woman..

  • God, I love her so much.

  • Which one of his songs did Kanye sample Nina Simone

  • he sampled this drum beat for his song on 808s & Heartbreak called "Bad News"

his most notible sample of her's, however, is the "Get By" beat he does for Talib Kweli. he samples Sinnerman

  • Yes yes and some one sample birds flying high...I think dipset? A lot of people try to discredit Kanye's talent but he knows and is not afraid to sample music that people would think he is crazy to even be listening to! He knows his stuff!

  • Chill people. I see and hear great music being made and felt.

  • I just figured out Kanye sampled this

  • Queenafrocaribchic , is self hatred African. This Female Believes looking African is a wrong thing, and not a positive thing.

  • i think you're over reacting.. jemal never said there was anything wrong with looking african

  • she looks like a pure African

  • What exactly would be wrong in looking "African"? Ignorance is a debilitating disease......

  • Precious , precious ,.,

  • I love your Spirit Mrs. Simone!!! You are what women aspire to become. Thank God for sharing you with us.

  • Damn good

  • Oh man! I just found out she died in 2003, I hope she knew how awsome she was! I love this song, when I close my eyes and listen, am taken back to a time better forgotten..........Love ya Nina

  • the precious never know they're worth more than gold and go to their graves with hardened souls... who can love you when no one wants to know who u really are... She just knew she was "Nina Simone" who else cared

  • I'm not certain that Nina was attempting to be humorous when she would scold her musicians onstage. Nonetheless, it came accross rather humorously. She suffered from bipolar disorder which explains her outlandish temperment.

  • Great voice :)

    Great presence :)

& the way she can make a joke and be totally deadpan .. she could have been a comedian too :)

  • I'm sooo glad feist covered this.

    but still, this is awesome!

  • pucker absoultley pucker

  • Wow! Look how this High Priestess of Soul commands an audience and creates the feeling of the " See Line Woman". Nina Simone is one of the most creative and powerful singers in jazz and she is what Blackness is and will always be!!!!!!! Than you, Nina

  • i love her.

  • I love love love love love love love love African American spirituals. Nothing compares to them the way they move and engage the soul.

  • a great voice.a great person

  • seeline woman: My opinion is This phrase was told to the woman that worked on the cotton fields When they were sick, dizzy, thirsty, tired the Boss told them "See Line Woman??" meaning you need to keep on working on the cotton lines. The alternative to this work was to be a prostitute like Nina is singing about.. But look at her moves, dance... its the cotton pickers moves. She sing with great sadness about a dark age where the slaves could either work n the cotton lines or be prostitutes..

  • I've got prostutes

  • She's so damn funny!

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs.

  • who sings the original see line woman , the house version, its with a guy does anybody know? if its sea limewoman?

  • Type in 'Old Sugar Mill, Maui' or 'The general's daughter' If you read the comments below you'll find some info about the original song.

  • The Shipp sisters recorded what was probably the original version

  • i just heard some real bad news!!kanye!!

  • lol!!!! kanYe samples great songs!!

  • yeah its just a shame he has to put his voice over them!

  • you can say what you want about the man

but he does open a world of music to blind people

...i wouldve never even heard this song if it wasnt for Kanye...so....thanks...to me, he truly is a gr8

  • He is a great borrower of music.

  • oh she was funny, like the song

  • No, it's SEE LINE. If you're thinking Feist, she renamed it that when she covered Nina's original.

  • Comment removed

  • wow, thanks. I love the feist version, but gotta listen to the other versions before I can say it's my favorite.

  • no artifices needed!little make-up and on stage.

    fabulous nina

  • I adore this song.

  • kanye west-bad news

  • Work Nina!!!

  • School the world Nina!

  • oh!

  • oops Simone's version is "See Line Woman" :)

  • isnt it sea lion woman?

  • Actually the Nina Simone version is "See Lion Woman." The Feist version is "Sea Lion Woman."

  • I've always been under the impression that the song is called Sea Lion Woman (even though Nina Simone called it See Line) which is a play on "See Lyin' Woman" because the song is about a woman who is of loose morals who is seducing all the men in town. In the original from the 1930s there is a line about "See Lion Woman, she began to lie, Sea Lion."

  • all u have to say is see line!

  • amazing... her control, her humor... I have goosebumps. A+++
