Lincoln was shot 3 days after the war ended and Johnson (who had been a slave owner, btw) just happened to be his successor. Reconstruction era lasted through 1877, well into Republican Grant's presidency as well. Also, talk of civil war was brewing decades before Lincoln became president. And it was finally initiated by the Democratic south's attack on Sumter.
