As the Faith makes us born again, but being born again brings about our will to do good works. If that makes sense. They are a gift of God, yes! But see how in verse 10, St. Paul makes it clear that works are something we must do when he says that "we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works." James speaks of the result of a true faith is good works, thus just saying you have faith or knowing there is a God isn't a real trust is Jesus and thus not a real faith. But Faith that saves is one that trust in Jesus and thus results in good works. So once again it is not the works that saves, but the faith that leads to the works. There is no mention of a gain in merit for the works, but rather that it shows faith.
