  • This camera is no longer the best hybrid camera...it is obsolete now! The panasonic GH2 is the best hybrid on the market right now

  • DUDE! hold the damn camera horizontal so i dont have to tilt my f***ing head to see what it looks like

  • Hi, what is the maximum capacity for the SD memory can the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS can read or take? I looked everywhere or even read the manual, but it didn't state anywhere. I wonder if it can take 32gb.

    Thanks.

  • is better than SX10 is??

  • this seems to be the greatest deal ever :o i thought i'd have to purchase 600 bucks for a camera, that only makes good photos, but this also records in HD =O

  • Brits always do such excellent commentating.

  • is it possible to extend the exposure beyond 15 secs with a remote shutter control?

  • witch is better the FZ 100 or this camra

  • Ok is it just me or is the video a lot better including the audio on the SX1 IS than the camera that Gordon uses to shoot this video.

  • wher was that foootage taken?? those mountains are beautiful.

  • @DrumNBum. Queenstown in New Zealand. Lord of the Rings Country

  • Great review. The audio quality sounds great as well. I owned a Canon SX-110 with (10x optical zoom but only 640 video mode) until I dropped it and it developed a dark spot center frame shortly thereafter. My only complaint about it was the lack of HD 720 video and annoying swishing sound background noise in the video mode's audio. I bought a new SX-120, a new model 10x, and it also had the sound quality defect and STILL only 640 res. video. The audio noise was still there so I returned it.

  • Can it take panoramic pictures?

  • excuse me, how long can you record video in full HD mode in one blow? or does it record in 30 min. segments? thanks for your time...

  • this or the sx20is or lumix dmc fz35

  • Thanks for the review, however, i have few questions - Can this camera offer some sort of depth of field, like dslr can? (i know that it will be never same, but can it have that blurry background effect?) And, am i able to focus manually? In camera it happens a lot to me that i want to have different thing in focus than it is focused to. Thanks for response!

  • I have a question. I'm new to cameras. Can I put in other types of lenses on these? Or are those only on SLRs?

  • What program should I use to edit the videos I take with this camera? I'm using adobe right now, but the video is overwhelming it and adobe is crashing. Please help, I really need to know.

  • @BlackHoleBeast try using sony vegas, but are u using premiere? because it shouldnt do that, try update.

  • Hello currently considering this camera or Fujis new hs 10 any thoughts would help knowing that you do not seem to reveiw fujis bridge cameras

  • which is better? P100 or SX 1IS i am using it for plane spotting

  • I have 350$ budget. in this limit, what the best buy you recommend

(with high filming and shooting capabilities)?

  • @utilizator333 the Powershot sx20 IS, of course... 720p HD at 30 fps... with 20x optical zoom and excelent image quality... also the price is around 350$

  • @utilizator333 its never about the budget, its about the functions. You can wait few years and even canon 5d mark 2 will be cheap toy.

  • how come, when you are turning the camera round to show us from the stereo mics to the dedicated video recording button, the power button is illuminated with a green light. i thought it was meant to be orange

  • Thank you for posting. I was undecided between this and the Panasonic (and I did visit your site) but after watching the video reviews I am going with the Canon (from an S3 IS).

  • I have the SX10IS and I'm thinking about selling it and going for a used SX1IS. My main reason is the 4fps and the HD video recording. I don't really see any reason not to,even after this video.

  • I would like to download the original video file as it says in the video, but I cannot find the download link on your website ...

  • Go to the features tab of the review and scroll down to the movie mode section.

  • Thanks for the video, I'm wondering if there is any good reason to get a dslr like canon 550d, or nikon d90 instead of this? it seems like it's cheaper, has a lot more zoom and better video. Also, is there any rolling shutter problems with this? would that be a good reason to go for the ccd version? why do some videos say it has 80x zoom? what's the cheapest way to get 80x zoom on a canon or nikon dslr? Thanks! :D sorry if I asked too many questions. :)

  • You can't get an 80x zoom on any camera. You're talking about a digital zoom which reduces quality - just look at the optical zoom figure. As for DSLRs, go to the best buys section at cameralabs . com and read the 'should I buy a DSLR' article.

  • @cameralabs

Thanks, your site is pretty comprehensive, I find myself ending up there more times than I can count while researching what camera to get. I want a good camera for traveling.

Something that can take good pictures without missing any shots. I have a flagship (2 years ago) compact sony camera and was extremely frustrated that I could not take any picture or video except in the daylight and so often miss shots to blur....

I want a dslr but I absolutely need zoom and video too....

  • What about the compact video cameras that advertise an 80x + optical zoom (and 2000x digital)? How can these compact superzooms offer 15x or 20x in such a small frame while dslr kits are about 4x.. and even a18x200mm lens (500USD and bulky) only has an 11x zoom...

  • Because a DSLR has a MUCH bigger sensor, so it needs bigger lenses too. You have to decide which is more important to you as you can't have both!

  • @cameralabs "Digital zoom" is surely one of the most misleading terms. What is really happening is that only part of the sensor is being used to record the image, so the image will be degraded in much the same way that it would be were one to over-enlarge an image for printing.

  • @ChrisBowlas Yes that's right, but the SX1 IS has a special trick. When it's recording 1080p video, it only needs a 1920x1080 frame on the sensor. Normally it would double-up pixels for better sensitivity, but its teleconverter option actually just records a 1920x1080 frame in the middle of the sensor with spare pixels on either side - this effectively doubles the focal length without compromising resolution.

  • Gordon, what do you think..

The Canon SX1 or the Sony HX1?

  • Check out the verdict page of my HX1 and SX1 reviews at cameralabs . com...

  • thats a really nice, camera, but for that price u could get a entry level dslr and get better pictures

  • yes but without hd video capabilities

  • What's better SX1, SX10 OR SX20? =)

  • The SX1 is the top of the SX series. The SX20 is the successor to the SX10.

I have the SX1 and I can say I'm very glad I got it.

  • I think SX1

  • Hi,

Where exactly is the downloadable video of the boat?

  • You'll find a link from my review of this camera at cameralabs . com.

  • Hey i found it thanks. Wow it really has better quality on my computer. But be honest now wich one is better canon powershot sx20 is or sx 1 is?? thanks you

  • Hi Gordon,

I have been watching your reviews and browsed you website and I think this is the camera I want to get. I am however wanting to be able to use manual focus, you talked about it a little in the video but no in-depth information about it. I have seen a demo of it here on youtube and it looks quite cumbersome. please could you fill me in. I enjoy your reviews very much and your website is just great :) Thanks

  • I only briefly tried the manual focusing and it was more to see whta it was like with the corase EVF - see the features page of my review at cameralabs...

  • Please do a review on the SX120 IS! I LIVE off your reviews lol. Message me back if you can.

  • It's been reviewed at cameralabs . com, along with lots of others you won't see here!

  • Any advise on which Canon flash is best to buy for this SX1- is that i am enjoying for the last 6 months?

    Any NON-Canon ones?

    How about METZ potato-Mashers?

Any adapters so that i can use older Metz 60CT1 & CT4 with this camera.

Thanks once agian for your excellent and patient responses.

    Ed

  • is there a shutter lag between shots in this camera?

  • Hey, do you know the filter size for this camera? im looking to buy a fish eye lense but need the size? thanks very much...great video too

  • Hi, im trying to decide between the PowerShot SX1 IS or the PowerShot SX20 IS, can anybody help me with that? I mean, witch one has a better image quality? do they both have full hd movie recording system?

  • Please read my reviews at cameralabs . com of both cameras - everything you need to know is there!

  • well I just returned the sx20is for the sx1is thre are alot of differences. formost the sx1is uses a cmos sensor vs the ccd type used on cheaper point n shoots. I experianced better picture quality without a dought as I have compaired shots taken exactly the same with both camaras. The sx1is shoots much better during low light and has full 1080p video the sx20is has the lesser 720p but still nice for the price. overall I love the sx1is but I have read of some durrability issues so keep warrentee

  • HI, I see that you have a post for the DSLR on how to take a picture with the back ground blurred out. Can you do this with the canon power shot sx1is? I just purchased this and would love to do this in pictures! Thanks

  • @kallsmom You need to change manually the Aperture setting (which u can do in M or Ae modes). When you're lowering the value (say f/2.7) it shrinks the depth of the picture that is in focus. Meaning if you focus the cam. on a person near you, the background is smudged (and vice versa).

If you set the apperture to a high value, the focus depth is larger, making both the person and the background in focus (up to a point).

You can do it with all the canon powershots...

  • Hi Gordon,

Does this camera shoot images while taking movie ?

  • You can do that, yes.

  • thanks icko.

  • are you sure about this? that's what i'm looking for.. a superzoom that can take pictures while shooting videos? if so, how many MP of still can you shoot while taking videos? thanks!

  • Got to agree with bartarobi,i bought a canon and it wouldnt take macro shots and was a pain to use.

So i opted for a sony, and what a differece.Very easy to use and takes great pics including macro.

So i would also say sony is a better make to buy and use, dont believe all the usual hype because its a canon they are not all good.

  • I dunno how to say this, but in my experience, its exactly the opposite.

    Funny =)

    I love Canon.

  • So I returned it and bought the sony dsc hx1 instead, and works perfectly, contrast is good, panoramic pics better, focus is much better, and can take perfect shots just using the intelligent auto mode.Same price, better quality.I recommend it to everyone.

  • After watching this review I`ve decided to buy the canon sx1 is, but after a few days of trying it out, I was very disappointed,no contrast in the pictures, after zooming in the picture is blurry, takes a long time to clear out, in low light conditions the pic is very noisy, image stabilisation is poor.

  • I have a question. I am seriously considering this camera, and was curious if it accepts external microphones via the top bracket. I see you showing it accepting flash guns, but would it accept a shotgun mic as well? I would assume not, but if it does that would be another huge bonus for me.

  • Am I crazy for thinking the SX1 IS is still a better camera than the SX20 IS??

  • Nop, you are ok..

  • @jdcontrol SX1 uses CMOS but SX20 employs CCD.

  • @SiamLoveLoveLove SX10, not sx20

  • @jdcontrol

    yes

  • I'm hearing that when it comes to stills, the new SX20 IS seems to be a little cleaner in lower light situations. I also think 720p is more than adequate for video.

  • I've been looking at a hell of a lot of camera video reviews and your ones are the best. Great work.

  • Hi, is there a time-lapse feature on this camera?

  • Can anybody help me please! Is it possible to attach additional filters or a macro lense to that camera?

  • Yes, I've seen INCREDIBLE macro photography from this camera with a Raynox DCR-250 lens.

  • nope, sorry mate, there's no chance u could attach additional filters to it..

  • Canon recently came out with the PowerShot SX20 IS and it seems to be quite similar to the SX1 IS only much cheaper ($399.99). If you could tell me how you think the quality compares, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

  • Queenstown is a nice place for photos,New Zelaand in general!

  • Nice review as always Gordon, I like to have your opinion on a dilemma I have. I have a nikon d5000 with a tamron 70-300mm in addition to the kit lens. I would like to have more zoom power and my dilemma is either to buy the canon sx1 or a teleconverter a 2x teleconverter for the nikon and tamron lens, wich solution would your recommend? I don't even know if the tamron or kenko teleconverter would work on the nikon d5000, have been trying to find answer on the internet but without success. ty

  • A teleconverter will reduce your quality, but it depends if you want to keep using your DSLR or not - feel free to ask on the cameralabs forums...

  • Thanks for you quick anwer.

Yes I want to keep the DSLR and use the Canon as a backup camera when I need zoom power (or to shoot video as it is more or less useless on the nikon). So you say I will get better quality image with the canon then with the teleconverter mount on the Nikon?

  • Well.. I believe this review was somewhat rigged to provide a favorable impression on the SX1.

It's obvious from the start that the "regular" recording was done in a reduced quality and terrible narrow bandwidth audio. Now if you compare to his other review you would easily know that this is not the norm.

So when he goes on to demo the SX1's video mode, it looks and sounds comparatively better.

  • You're getting confused, and I resent the suggestion that I rig anything. This video was filmed with EXACTLY the same Canon HV30 as all my recent HD reviews (audio with the built-in mic) and edited using the SAME Premiere Pro CS4 workflow. It was also exported using the SAME WMV settings before uploading. The reason it may look different here is due to YT's encoding when it was originally uploaded. So please don't make negative accusations in public against someone before knowing all the facts.

  • Is that really the case? Lets look at one of your other reviews, for example that of the Panasonic TZ7.

Seems obvious that the "regular" HV30 recording has much better sounding audio than the one in this SX1 review doesn't it?

  • They were recorded in different rooms.

  • I see.. so all the other reviews, 500D, D5000, E-620, TZ7, G1, etc. were all done in the same room with good sound from your HV30... accept for this review of the SX1 which happened to be in a different room?

C'mon now, the degraded audio quality is obviously not due to room size. Anyone with basic A/V knowledge can tell this. It's clearly been recorded at, or downsampled to a lower frequency bandwidth.

  • It's called moving house. All my reviews up to May 2009 were done in a room in my old house and all the ones after that were done in a room in a new house. The camera, software and editing workflow have not changed. I certainly have not downsampled any audio, nor have any reason to do so. I can't speak for what YT does to the videos after uploading.

  • Hey mate! First let me say that I respect both you and Gordon's opinion. Second, may I suggest that just out of respect to Gordon, you may want to shoot him an email clarifying the facts before making such an accusation. Gordon's review are highly respectively and it may seem down right rude to make slanderous remarks. Hope you can see my point.

  • Hiya, first off, I totally agree that Gordon does extremely well written and presented camera reviews. Most, if not all of his past reviews have been more objective and thorough than competing review sites (with a possible exception of dpreview). I may not be an expert, but know enough about AV to know some things. My intention was to ensure that Gordon continues to present unbiased reviews, and not falter under pressure from manufacturers. It benefits both readers, and integrity of his reviews.

  • Okay, you have a point.

  • haha fast shooting XD = kricket?

  • Great and informational review =D

  • this or g10?

  • actually this camera RAPES g10...

  • hi! how did upload this video on youtube? are there settings you need to do for windows movie maker? HELP please!

  • Movie Maker is a basic video editor, there are much better editors than that.

YouTube allows you to upload any film file from your computer if you're logged in. Look at the top right of this page, see the yellow "Upload" button. Just click there, select upload video & browse to find the film file you've made in the location you have saved it in in your computer. Then add descriptive comments. Films can take hours to upload, let it go.

For Movie Maker, edit your film then select Publish.

  • ... You should publish to your computer or a C.D., to get your own copy of the finished film. So, it's nearly as quick anyway to upload by going to YouTube, selecting Upload & finding the file you've just published to your own computer.

Some editing porgrams publish directly to video sites like YouTube, but really that's hardly much advantage as it takes a couple of clicks to do it yourself & you ought to have your own copy on your computer anyway. It's a selling gimmick for newcomers.

  • Does the SX1 have an external-mic-socket?

  • no, it doesn't.

  • I've red on various forums that all though the SX1 iS has the CSMOS processor the image quality of the camera is not as good as the SX10 iS. Now is that true? Myself I'm very into shooting movies. but I also want best possible image quality.

As a summary of what I've red on the internet, I should get me the SX1 for filming and Sx10 (Which I own) for stills. Now is this true? Does the SX10 have better image quality? Also can't one attach the 2x teleconverter to the SX10 Is?

  • I've thoroughly compared their features and quality in my review at cameralabs . com.

  • Hello,

I finally decided for the SX1 IS. I want to protect the main lens with a filter. Apparently, there is no way to install any filter on the SX1 IS. What to do? I want to get a UV and a Polarizer filters. Are there any tricks to install such filters on the SX1 IS?

  • Hey there

I have watched this video and your video for The Sony DSC HX 1. I am stuck between the two or maybe you even have a better recommendation. I want to use the camera for mainly taking videos of live concerts and possibly making short films. I had the Sony point and shoot DSC T100 and the sound on that camera was amazing so that is why I was leaning towards Sony. Can you please help me out??

Thanks a lot and great reviews!

  • They both have pros and cons - I've summed them up in my HX1 review at cameralabs . com...

  • hey please help me out.. im about to purchase a canon camera but im not sure which is best buy? im chhosing b/n sx1is and sx10is.. i want to take pictures and take nice videos with it.... please help me Gordon.. thanks..

  • Check out the verdict page of my SX1 IS review at cameralabs . com!

  • Hello Gordon, I can also take pictures fast you here ( 1:34 ) on SX10? I am thinking of buying an SX10 to take pictures of aircraft.

    Hugs

  • Hi Gordon have you upload any review on Canon powershot sx200i

  • Yep, at cameralabs . com.

  • Thanks for the video. The last camera I had was a PowerShot S2 IS which now no longer works. It appears to have a stuck shutter.

This said, camera technology has improved greatly and have seen your review of the SX1 IS and SX10IS. Pic to Pic which camera takes the better shot or Nikkon Coolpix P0??

I'd like to get the best camera possible for picture enlargements without going to say a Nikkon D90 or Canon equivilant.

K.I.S.S. rule applies for me BUT I want the manual control>

  • Check out the results and gallery pages for all three models at cameralabs . com to compare the quality...

  • I respect that. I would like to know what the criteria was or is that would rate the SX1 IS with an image quatity of 16 and the SX10 IS with a17/20?

What is the criteria used to differentiate between a 16 and a 17 score on image quality??

  • Look at the high ISO results and red my comments there... I've also commented in the verdict of my SX1 IS review.

  • Found it!!! This is very helpful!!!!

  • Hello Gordon

I saw in ur test that u used a Sandisc SDHC Ultra II. I'm about to buy the 16go one, is it a good choice to record 1080p movies and take 4ips ?

    Thanks :)

  • Well, the 1GB models worked fine for me!

  • Ok, thanks again flash Gordon ! (What a quick answer ^^)

  • hi i am looking for a good all round digital camera that would be mainly for sports photos.would this camera suit that? Thanks

  • Hi everyone, I just updated my SX1 IS review at cameralabs . com with results for RAW files, following the firmware update.

  • Wow. Great review!

My friend's getting one and now I'm so stoked to take pictures with it!

  • hi Gordon.

    i really loved your review!!!

I am really interested in buying one.

however i would like to know, if when using the continues 4fps, if the flash works a swell? or if it only works when taking a regular photo?

    thanks!

    Bob.

  • Hi Bob, good question, but sadly the answer is no - you only get one flash with the popup model.

  • Nice review and so I am gonna buy one of these, my old Powershot S3 took a direct hit last Sunday and its gone to camera heaven.. No Not the Playboy Mansion..

  • I have the same question and am unable to find the answer at cameralabs: with the memory card that comes with it how many minutes of video can it record..? in HD and then in 4:3..?

    Is the shutter noisy..?

Also, in the old cameras there used to be shutter priorty - is there something like that on this camera..?

As you can see I havent bought a camera in years.

  • It doesn't come with a memory card - you need to supply your own, so it depends how big the card is. The video rate for HD is in the review, as are details on the exposure modes.

  • Hi Gordon, I have a hv30...and I wanted to know if you had to choose between the hv30 or canon sx1 20x which camera would be our choice.

  • If I was filming video, I'd want the HV30.

  • Thanks for the fast reply!

  • hi gordon, i just want to ask what is better sx1 or sx10? i mean what will you buy of the 2? and one more thing mate how many minutes can the sx1 can record? thanks mate

  • It doesn't come with a memory card - you need to supply your own, so it depends how big the card is. See the verdict of my SX1 IS review to compare with the SX10 IS...

  • Hi Gordon ...... Which handycam do u use to record ur videos ??

  • The HD tours are filmed with a Canon HV30.

  • dats a gr8 cam ......... btw keep up the good work n hope to see more videos in DSLR Tips also.

  • hai do you have any idea of reviewing Sony Hx1 in near future.

Eagerly waiting for your review and ur conclusion

    overall.

  • I hope so, but there probably won't be a video tour - only a written review at cameralabs . com.

  • sorry.. correct me if i'm wrong... Sx10 can too have a continous shot only at 1.4 frame per second while Sx1 can do 4 frames per second...

  • Yes, that's correct.

  • thanks..

  • hey do u recommend this for home use.?

i mean this ione instead of DSLR EOS etc.?

  • which software you use for editing ur videos?

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

  • Nice review. I enjoy your videos.

You and your viewers may be interested in visiting the smart pod channel to check out a versatile camera and video mount accessory that attaches anywhere and everywhere. It works well with the Canon Powershot as well all cameras and video recorders. Please check it out.

We are also looking for product reviewers.

    Thanks.

  • Where is this place? (0:38). It is very beautiful! I want to go there!

  • It's Queenstown in New Zealand's South Island!

  • The bass from the mic of the SX1 seems to be better than from the mic he uses at the start of the vid.

  • Which (AA) batteries would you recommend for this camera. I will be talking lot of pictures in bright sunny conditions, so flash wont be an issue but for recording HD video.

  • can you add or change lens on this camera?

  • and what about the ISO....

i heard that in the american version the had upgreaded the ISO to 3200..

is that correct or not ?

  • I would really like to buy a point and shoot camera without fiddling with lots of buttons. I would like to take pictures of my son that has lots of detail. What is the best camera that is the closet quality to the slr for a still shoot?

  • Hey "Cameralabs" and Gordon Laing.

I've got my SX1 IS and I'm struggling to play the .mov files properly. I saw you used Premiere CS4 to edit the .mov but my image is really laggy and I'm unable to make any good of it. So I'm wondering whatkind of codec packs you have installed... or is there another trick to make it work with Premiere?

I'd be very thankful for any information of this!

  • It was laggy on mine too during editing, only smooth after I'd edited and converted it tinto something that's easier to play. We have a thread about this in the imaging software section on the cameralabs forums...

  • Ok thanks, I'll check that out.

  • Hello,

what camcorder do you use to record this HD videos? The quality is great!

  • Thanks! I use a Canon HV30.

  • Your reviews are great, have watched 3 now on this group of cameras and feel that the PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-FZ28

Purely for the cost and video function. Trade off is mono sound on video.

  • hey gordon

do you agree with dpreview's hard review of Recommended (Just) on this camera

i'd like to hear you thoughts on this

  • I don't comment on other people's reviews. If you want my opinion of the SX1 IS, please check out the verdict page of my review at cameralabs . com!

  • Hi Cameralabs! When can you have a review with the Sony HX1 a serious competitor of the SX1. Do you recommend waiting for the release of the SOny HX1 or purchase this SX1. Hope could make some sort of comparison with this 2 superzooms. Thanks!

  • I'll review the HX1 when Sony send me one to test.

  • Hello im looking to buy myself a high end digital in the next few weeks. Would you recommend this? I like the HD features on this camera. Ive been reading reviews that say it drains batteries quickly would you let that put you off?

    Thankyou.

  • Everything I know about this camera is in my review at cameralabs . com - you'll also find the models I recommend right now in the best buys section there...

  • I am sorry but that fact that it runs on FOUR AA BATTERIES rather makes it a redundant useless peice of junk. I just don't see the point in buying a pro quality, expensive camera and then having to spend a vast fortune on the flippin batteries!

Sorry for the rant but I just feel that once you have moved on from the basic point and shoot style digital cameras then you should NOT have to comprise on them.

It might be very very good but I would never buy one.

  • My Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ-2 is a great camera for what I do at the moment. Plus I love the fact that it comes with a rechargeable battery.

Can you please suggest something in the 300 pound range that has a 8 mega pixel resolution, 12 or more zoom lens and a high quality lens (wide angle) for more light intake. Plus I don't want something huge either.

Thanks for you great simple reviews as I am taking this up as a hobby at the moment.

  • How about the Panasonic FZ28?

  • its not pro quality, buy an dslr.

  • I bought the sx1 and admittedly i was annoyed as hell it takes 4 AA's and not a Li-ON but you dont need to spend a fortune on batteries... just buy a couple of sets of rechargables..

  • Hey Gordon, great reviews, very useful and well made. Thanks!

Nice to see lots of Queenstown in your videos :)

  • you are great reviewer ! !

  • hey, im looking for a good new slr, i need it to be able to have a good zoom, able to remove the lense and i want it digital... what do you recomend?

  • The models I'd recommend are in the best buys section at cameralabs . com...

  • Great work mate, really appreciate your video reviews. Any thoughts on the Fujifilm Finepix S100fs? Seems to be a direct competitor to the SX1 and SX10 - would love to see a review of that model.

    Keep up the great work!
